In this 2-hour tutorial, I walk you through the entire Optics plugin by Boris FX, showing you the basics of how to use it and providing some tips and tricks to integrate the plugin into your Photoshop compositing workflow. It's so awesome that you have done these Optics tutorials, and that they focus (as you always do) on actual real-life use of it. Most tutorials focus on Particle Illusion and nothing else -- I want to see all the other stuff it can do! It would be great if you did more videos using the other effects and how to use them creatively together, how they can interact in interesting ways etc. -- Thank you for all the ones you've done so far, you've convinced me not to end my Optics subscription just yet!

Wow. At 30:30, you talk about taking a film look from optics and exactly reproducing that effect, using curves. My jaw hit the floor. I would dearly love to know how on earth you figured out EXACTLY what adjustments to make to each channel in curves, to perfectly reproduce a given colour grade! Do you have a video which explains how to do this?

Great video. It great helped my learning curve for this software. I always use these plug-in on a smart layer so all work done in Optics is non-destructive and fully editable. The smart object route seems less complicated to me than saving an effect and then redoing it in Photoshop. Again, great tutorial.

Thank you friend for taking the time to make this video with an absolutely detailed explanation about Boris Optics. I really hope the devs remove as many options that are unnecessary and just focus on effects like they have done in the Light and Render section. But the program promises that in the future it will be really spectacular.

Great video, I love your tutorials Rikard, you explain things so well, I installed trial version now, I like buy perpetual license before trial ends, for me better than pay monthly, I think is the best have optics forever

Ok, I watched the entire thing. Excellent, except for 1 thing. You often mentioned that you would do something directly in PS. My guess is that 90% of people watching this wouldn’t know how to do in PS in the first place. Maybe some day :) subscribed too. Thank you!

If you're thinking in terms of a "layer stack", noise reduction ALWAYS happens above any masks so when you do it in your workflow will make no difference to the final outcome. Personally, I do it AFTER all my location corrections.

Question: Can I sell images and video renders as overlay/assets that I've made with optix? What's the licensing on resulting imagery?

I love Optics! But is there a way to only get the fx layer that it generates and not the fx layers baked on to the original image? I'd like to have things like glows, lens flares, particles etc. on separate black layers in PS for better compositing.

You can do this by generating a constant black layer in Optics and putting it underneath all effects but over your original image. I believe the latest version of Optics also added this as an option-meaning you can export the effect as a layer to then use in Photoshop (which is how I prefer to use it as well).

A great and informative video, based on your review I downloaded the trial version to use with my Photoshop 22.5.0 for M1 Mac and cannot get it to show up in the Filter section, it will open as a stand alone but not as a PS plugin, can you tell me how you managed this as I have had zero answer back from Boris FX which is very sad. Kind Regards, John

That's strange. Mine showed up at the bottom of the filter menu under Boris FX. My suggestion is to go to the optics forum. That's where I went for support and I got my question answered within a few hours. forum.borisfx.com/c/optics/34

Still nothing Rikard- this is what I get each time I attempt to access the site for downloading the assets 'The page you were looking for doesn't exist. You may have mistyped the address or the page may have moved'.

Sir, thank you for the comprehensive tutorial. I'd have liked spending time with you more if I didn't think the whole thing bored you. When in nearly every sentence you stretch your vowels, the effect becomes tedious and dismissive of the subject. Sorry for the criticism, but you are a smart fellow and you could correct anything you like.

So sorry If I make you uncomfortable by saying this: But it´s sooo annoying how you mention over and over about how you can do it in PS. If you can almos everything replicate or do it there, just mentioned once, and just mentions which cool things you like that you can´t do in PS. Every single click it´s "I could better do this in PS but if you don´t have PS...." sorry. Had to say it. Sorry.
