@@Doflaminguard Within the same generation 1-1 is not unusual. It's when the price to performance is 1-1 with the last generation that you get bad value. So like the 4080 being 1-1 with the 3080 or other higher end 3000 series cards.

Unfortunately depending on what you do AMD is not any form of real competition. If you do ML outside of some very specific cases AMD is non-viable. For 3D modeling AMD performs much worse. Despite how crucial these workloads are becoming, especially ML, AMD has not yet put the investment (and may flat out not be able) to make themselves competitors in the professional space.

@@SatchmoBronson yeah true but the cooler is the same as the one used by the 4090 which is clearly overkill. I think it's likely that board partners will produce smaller variants or indeed water cooled options that will fit in smaller cases.

They are also only showing 4k because almost every game is CPU bottlenecked at 1440p with both cards, so its really not even worth it unless you wanna play at 4k.

I'm in the same situation. Started looking into building high-end-ish PC from scratch for games and fun, and I can tell you that it looks not really good right now in September 2023. If I decided to build it now, it would be i7 13700K on a Z790 chipset with DDR5 RAM and the rest of the money would be spent on GPU. But 14th gen of Intel processors coming in about 6 weeks (the end of October 2023), which is a refresh of 13th gen. So if I waited 2-3 month, I'd be able to build something like i7 14700K+mobo with Z790 chipset+DDR5 RAM and some kind of a GPU. BUT... 5000 series of nvidia GPUS is rumored to be announced in late 2024. As well as 15th gen of intel CPUs is coming in fall 2024, which will have (according to rumors) a new architecture and so on and so forth. Granted, 'announced' doesn't mean I'd be able to buy, lets say, 5090 right away, it will probably take a month or two or even 3 minimum (and realistically even more than that) after the announcement for the top-tier cards to hit retail stores. It is indeed a hard time for anyone who wants to build a PC from scratch, because if you build it now or 2-3 month from now, you could miss on something that the new generations of hardware will offer in a year. And if you wait a year or year and a half, you could end up in a situation where the prices are even bigger nightmare than they are today, because the AI boom could create new shortages in GPUs and drive the prices even higher. I'm a little bit all over the place in this comment, but that's my honest illustration of what's going on in the hardware market right now.

Just don't buy the 4080 when the super is cheaper.
