Today I'm really excited because the Oreck Discover has arrived.
And if you know anything about Oreck, Oreck makes a vacuum called the Magnesium or used to make the Magnesium, and they haven't in a couple years. and they decided for some reason or another to come back out with the Oreck Discover, which is the lightest weight upright vacuum on the market. And one of the only vacuums that we've ever found that will work on soft or shag carpet.
So I'm going to take you through the differences between the old Magnesium and the new Discover, and hopefully that will help you decide if it is something that you want to purchase.
Alright, so where do we begin. Start with the top down. So the handles are very different. You can see, this might scare Betty, you can see the handle on the new Oreck Discover is much different. I know, I know that's so scary. If you want you can leave. The handle is a plastic molded handle,
whereas the old Magnesium's were more of like a metal handle
and the whole design of the old Magnesium’s were so that you didn't see cord between the handle and the base. So there was a RF switch or radio frequency remote control switch going from the handle to the base.
They don't have that anymore. They went back to the old school style of
having a cord all the way up into your handle, which is actually, in my opinion, better.
However, let's talk about this handle here. So if you know anything about the current, slightly heavier Orecks, we seem to replace these handles a lot. This plastic is not the most durable plastic, and I feel like when the vacuum gets heavy, the handle can't support it and/or we have some strong customers here where they're kind of bending the handle in such a way that over time it cracks.
But the good thing about Oreck Discover is it has a seven year warranty.
So you are warrantied with that handle for seven years if anything were to go wrong. They call it a limited warranty, so the limited warranty depends on your service center and what they want to cover or not cover. So if you brought your vacuum in and it had the most heavy bag in the world because it's over full. You're service center may not cover that handle.
So something to think about. Change your bag before you bring it in.
Let's see what else, what else is different?
Not much actually. The headlights a little bit different looking, but otherwise it seems the same. It has the same dock and the same design where the bag goes in. In fact, if you have Magnesium bags,
they will fit the Oreck Discover. So if you're looking to do a trade in
or an upgrade and you still have bags from your old Magnesium,
you will be fine to use those bags. They have the same holes, Oreck sometimes does that where they change up the holes just a slight bit so that you have to buy new bags, but they did not do that in this new Discover. So your Magnesium bags will fit, Yay!
And other than that, the brush rolls are pretty much the same, the wheels are the same, what makes this vacuum - It's like the Magnesium RS, which is the one that pivots, so it has that pivoting motion, and what makes this one work on your shag carpet is the fact that it has a very easy floating head. So this head adjusts itself with these large wheels on the side.
So a lot of people have asked, are you going to carry this model? And obviously, I am, and let me tell you why. The Magnesiums are sensitive vacuums. If you are someone who has kids using this, if you are someone that has a cleaning lady that is harsh on vacuums, I don't feel like the Magnesium or the Discover is the right vacuum for you. We find that they're very sensitive. And if you pick up things like a sock, they tend to get clogged very easily and damage a lot. Even though it's just a sock and it’s soft, it's crazy, the damage that it can cause. So if you are someone who's using this yourself and you're going to make sure that you take good care of it, and that you are not going to suck up things you shouldn't, like Legos and socks, and things like that. you should be fine with the Oreck Discover.
But, yeah, if you have cleaning people, they tend to be very sensitive to that. So I would - you have a warranty, however, it wouldn’t cover if you sucked up something accidentally and it damaged something and it can get costly pretty quickly.
