Lot #749 - This early-production 1969 Boss 429 being sold by the original owners Dale and Phyllis with all of the original documentation and 21,400 original miles. This matching-numbers, original, unrestored car features a 429ci V8 early-production S-code NASCAR motor with a 4-speed manual transmission. It was purchased from Oakley Motor Co. in Memphis, TN, on March 18, 1969. Original documentation includes dealership sales agreement and two owner warranty identification cards. Also included is the original finance contract with the original bank payoff letter. Boss 429 purchasers also received a questionnaire from G&D Communications Corporation to the "exclusive" owners with a Boss 429 name plate as a token of appreciation to complete; both the letter and name plate are included. Additional documents include a bank slip showing first payment due date, number of payments and the first-year insurance policy document.

Reading between the lines... I'll guess the low milage happened because they started a family. He bought the car new to celebrate his graduation. Got a job, bought a house, had a baby. Now the two door car is just not the best fit for the family. They bought something with four doors but he loved the car so it didn't get traded in. It went into the new garage for occasional use only. Lucky for Ford fans. Next issue: Ford did not build this car to beat all the muscle cars on the street. If they wanted to do that, they certainly could've. They needed a race engine for NASCAR competition. To qualify, they needed to sell at least 500 of these engines in production vehicles. That's why the carb limited power to 375 HP. The pump gas available limited the compression. The tiny carb obviated a need for dual exhaust but in 70 they added it to help sales. That package required a lower RPM range cam for street use. The heads, valves, block, intake, crank and rods, transmission and rear end were all race car ready. I guess a quick swap of carb and open dual exhaust would've added 50 HP for the street. Drag racers could've swapped the cam and pistons to run race gas or methanol. All those parts are very easy to change while it's very hard to accomplish a high RPM tuned induction and exhaust system and race engine short block. Ford provided the very difficult parts for the racing teams but it was right there for the hobbyist as well. This engine would have dominated NASCAR except the NASCAR organization changed their rules which eliminated the need for production. The value of the car cannot be argued. Once the hammer falls at the auction, the value of this asset is indisputable for that day and location. Now three years later, they'd probably open bidding at $300k with increments of 10, it might fetch $400k.

Great example of where to use a microphone so that background noises can be turned way down. The owners can have some nice money from the sale and future generations can see this classic. But the sad part is that it will never be seen crusing the strip on Saturday night or be ripped on at the drag strip or just enjoyed for what it was built for.

Wouldn't say a lot more they didn't perform better than the 425hp 427 from Chevy or Mopars hemi. Had they not stuffed a mild cam in them with a small carb they could have been far more impressive. In net hp they make less than 350hp. So you are looking at maybe 300whp.

wow some owner had his classic put on a dyno rebuilt by who knows who and how do we know he gave it all it had. if i had a 1970 429 BOSS with double barrel heads worth ( just the engine) 30.000 and up ,why would i throw it on a dyno and run the shit out of it lol. i have seen stock ones in engine shops on dyno easily push 500hp all day, and thats STOCK. comparing 429 BOSS to a 350 GM is retarded , if the 429 is such joke why are people willing to pay 30 to 40 grand!!! damn they could have just bought a stock 350 or even 427. The 429 BOSS double barrel head engine is one of the best race engine built in the 1970s. the reason ford rated these and other engine below the 400hp range is because a lot of people may get kill with power like that and the ford suits needed deniability and the insurance issue of course. So all you GM fan boys need to do your research . ford built so many bad ass engine's i not going to list them all it would take to long,but the 429 is just one and it is awesome. maybe you should research the 429 performance in NSCAR ,basically the same engine in the mustang and others.

Watch the video from 4:28 -4:31 and see the reflection for the Ceiling light get distorted . At the 03:28 mark you see the minor damage to the fender lip just above the side marker light . I wouldn't restore it because it's a piece of history where all the dings and worn chrome prove its age .

Awesome ride I have 5 Mustang's 3 69's coupe, ragtop & a Mach1 & a 72 & 73 Mach 1, I also have a set of original Goodyear Polyglass tires from that era, they look great but they are a hard riding tire with no traction on wet pavement. The 69 body style has always been my favorite & the 72 a second fave. It's hard to believe this car when new could be had for less than $6000.00, my real stupid mistake a few year's ago 1987. I passed up a deal for a 1968 Shelby GT 500 with an extra 428 for $17,000.00 Lime green 4 speed, posi you know how hind sight is 20 20.

The reason the scoop looks different is the '69 Boss 429's were notorious for cooking the paint right off the scoops. Ford had so many warranty issues with the painted scoops they ended up going to the black (heat resistant) hood scoops in 1970 (an old Ford guy and now recently retired multi degreed Engineer who worked 32 years at America's largest defense contractor.

Wow what a rare find...You can tell by the off color that the hood scoop has been repainted...the '69's were notorious for cooking the paint on the hood scoops due to the heat of the Boss 429 Engine...that's why Ford went to flat black hood scoops in '70.

What a great car! Perhaps I'm wrong on this, but from what I've seen, the 429 isn't exactly what one would consider a daily driver. It's not the power, but overall drivability around town. The Chrysler Hemi back in the day had similar driving matters. Still, that doesn't make this beauty less of a car in any way! My father had a 428 Cobra Jet that looked just like this car with a slightly smaller hood scoop. Same color and all. I was just a little kid, but I still remember driving it off of the dealers lot back when it was brand new. Courtesy of gasoline rationing and horrible fuel mileage, he traded it for a '74 Opel Manta (A). Grr.
@MustangConnection1
@MustangConnection1 7 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct, these were never good street cars and with just over 1300 made between 69-70 they were never made for mainstream consumption. They struggle at low RPM's. The 428 CJ is a way better street motor in stock configuration. Bet your Dad still wished he had that CJ car!
@tscooter22
@tscooter22 7 жыл бұрын
I know I wish he still had it back in the day. He died very young, so I basically inherited the Opel as my first car, but man, I could have had the Mustang if he didn't trade it. I can't hold that against him that! heh Believe it or not, the Opel was a really fun car back in the day. I only had it for a year or so and ended up ordering a brand new fully loaded '82 black Mustang GT. Thanks to t-top delays, it took over a year to show up, but I was in 7th Heaven when it arrived. Crazy me, I had the engine out after less than a month and made a little monster out of that 302 (looked like a 60s engine with A/C and no smog crap. I also redid the suspension and wheel/tire combo for SCCA racing in the F Prepared class. Man, what a great everyday college car. LOL Actually, it was very drivable.

I remember those Opels being cool looking. I bought an '83 GT used in '84 and drove it in college as well, too funny. No mods though as CA has some very strict smog laws. Had that car for about 4 years.

MustangConnection1 there wouldn't have been anything wrong with driving it a little more. it's fine to garage one, but at some point if you don't get it out and enjoy it, you just have something sitting in the garage. I've got an 03 terminator cobra with only 20,000 miles on it, but I still drive it quite frequently. I'd rather enjoy it myself than get a few extra grand in the end if I sell it. can't make memories with it sitting in a garage
@khalid749

And thats precisely why the unused one goes for much more. No one wants your hand me downs. They want the one someone didn't get to enjoy so they can. Not your sweat ridden seats, poor maintenance, and must odors. This was a great find. I bet he bought two of them. Ran one into the ground and babied this one. That's what I would have done.

It's funny how some people rant about a car like this with 21,000 miles yet if it had been bought new and immediately been relegated to NHRA A/S Eliminator duty and showed 107 miles or so how that would be "cool."

Plenty of classic Mustangs out there, the Boss 429 was out of the "common" mans budget since it was introduced and has held a collector status since new. If you are talking about buying a used one back in the 70's then yes but these cars have been well out of reach for most for a very long time. Craigslist and Ebay are still chock full of affordable DIY projects for 69-70 fastbacks at somewhat reasonable prices.
