Osmolality
Normal: 261 - 280 mOsm/kg
Indications:
 Monitor:
o Electrolyte balance
o Acid-Base balance
o Hydration
 Evaluate function of antidiuretic hormone.
Description: Osmolality is a measure of the particles in solution. The size, shape, and charge of the particles do not impact the osmolality
What would cause increased levels?
 Dehydration
 Azotemia
 Hypercalcemia
 Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemia Syndrome (HHS)
 Hypernatremia
 Diabetes Insipidus
 Hyperglycemia
 Mannitol therapy
 Uremia
 Severe pyelonephritis
 Shock
 Ketosis
What would cause decreased levels?
 Hyponatremia
 Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone (SIADH)
 Overhydration

Thank you ! I’ve been trying to understand this for some time now and your video made it make sense. In a sense, you’re measuring the amount of particles in the body, which is referring to electrolytes in the blood.... not fluid. Dehydration cause an increase in osmolality (due to the retention of electrolytes) and Over hydration/SIADH, cause a decrease in osmolality.

Thank you for this video, I'm learning about HHNK and it talks about the blood being hyperosmolar. After watching this explanation of what osmolality is, it helps me understand it. Thank you again!

Thank you so much! I am currently taking Medsurg, and after seeing this video the increase and decrease in osmolality in SIDAH and DI finally make sense to me!! Thank You!

I know. Yesterday I had the exam and I was not the only person who was clueless about this topic. The lab exam had a lot of this osmo thing. 😢

Sometimes NURSING professors do that because they expect you to retain this information from your prerequisites. That's why it's so important to pay attention in biochem and organic chem and learn how to do stoichiometry there instead of nursing school when you won't have time! BTW stoichiometry and "dimensional analysis" = same thing. So pay attention in your pre-reqs. They're not just something to get over with. They're ultra important.

This whole time I thought osmolarity had to do with water more so than particles
