Just bought a new 2023 Marin San Quentin 1? Maybe it’s on you short list and you will buy one soon. Either way if you are a person that likes to upgrade your bike and shed some weight, or make it a bit more unique, then you may be thinking what should I upgrade?
People often say a dropper post is needed first. While yes that would be nice, in our opinion the biggest bang for your dollar will be to invest in a new fork. If you just barely save up enough to buy the bike and now are being told you need to upgrade it, don’t worry. For most people who have never had an air fork, they probably won’t notice the Suntour XCM coil and it will be fine for them. For those that don’t weigh very much or have had air forks in the past, you’ll feel the difference and want to upgrade.
For lighter riders, we’ve found it very difficult for them to even get any travel on the inexpensive coil forks. They are just too stiff.
We decided to upgrade our demo/rental San Quentin with a Rockshox Recon 27.5 130mm boost spacing fork. They can vary in price but are usually in the $250-350 range for this version.
There is a 2lb weight difference between the Recon and the XCM fork which is significant! The bike feels much lighter in the front end now which is great.
