Everyone at Nebula laughed at Elon when he held that conference. You'd think that someone who paid $44b for a platform -- because he thought the prior administration was filled with idiots and morons -- would know the first thing about the creator economy on or off that platform. Look, it's great he was asking questions...but the time to do that was before you buy, not after. The problem for Elon is that Twitter's issues were social/political not technical (in the sense that you have to make compromises to keep users, advertisers, and governments all relatively happy at the same time). The prior admin made choices and Elon didn't understand why. He thought Twitter was filled with free lunches, but it was actually filled with Chesterton Fences.
@hjewkes
@hjewkes 3 ай бұрын
Chesterton Fence: There exists in such a case a certain institution or law; let us say, for the sake of simplicity, a fence or gate erected across a road. The more modern type of reformer goes gaily up to it and says, “I don’t see the use of this; let us clear it away.” To which the more intelligent type of reformer will do well to answer: “If you don’t see the use of it, I certainly won’t let you clear it away. Go away and think. Then, when you can come back and tell me that you do see the use of it, I may allow you to destroy it.” - G. K. Chesterton

Yeah I definitely agree that he should have done his research before going out and buying the platform. The fact that he didn't know about it after buying the platform is concerning.

A lot of this is also trial and error when it comes to purchasing such a large social media platform that a lot of real-life organizations use for information dissemination. I'm not necessarily the biggest Elon fan-boy out there, but you can't tell me that he did not do any research before buying the platform for $44 billion! I mean the man has SpaceX and Tesla for goodness sake! Although I don't know, maybe both companies aren't operating as well they could be. Point is the man does his research from what I can see.

Dumb take. It could be said that Twitter was haemorrhaging money in the billions and was not profitable for a long time. The previous admin could not innovate and create new avenues of revenue or social issues because they were afraid of upsetting their userbase. That's why almost all features were killed at the pilot stages. Remember the OG For You page? Remember fleets? Remember periscope? One thing you will realise about Elon is that he is not afraid of changing the status quo, no matter how much hate he gets. A change agent will always disrupt the norms of how a machine works. The old twitter that censored and suppressed speech is gone. How many people on the left have been banned? How many people on the right have been brought back? And you say that the prior admin made choices to keep everyone happy? Don't be naive. Regarding the technical changes to X, we are going to witness a huge change in the upcoming years, where the hold of advertisers will loosen on how speech is dictated, as X will rely less on advertisers as it changes itself into a bank. Everyone laughed at Elon when he started SpaceX too. And when he got Tesla's first electric car on the road. But history will be nicer to him

I think that the fundamental issue is that, our side knows why the fence is there, it is to keep out the other half of the political debate, and so if it costs billions to remove the fence, that price is something we are willing to pay.

The user experience is totally different between Twitter and YT - I drop in and out of Twitter many times a day, and only stay briefly. I don't do that with YT but I spend significantly longer each session. Also, as you discussed, I go to Twitter for in-the-moment stuff but anything that's not happening right now is too difficult to search my timeline for. Equally, I can't easily bookmark stuff on Twitter like I can with YT's playlists. As a consumer, using YT is just a much nicer experience whereas Twitter is too divisive and argumentative for me to enjoy using it... and that's without me even commenting on Twitter's owner.

One of my problems with streaming on X is getting the video to your TV. I am sure there is a way, but it is not as easy as KZfaq. For example, SpaceX took their KZfaq streams of all of their launches away from KZfaq and put them on X. These used to be appointment watching for me and my kids because the LOVE rockets. Now, without a great way to be alerted (KZfaq alerts are pretty reliable) and a way to get it onto the TV (sometimes quickly, so you don't miss it), we've stopped watching the launches. I'd be interested to see how their engagement changed when they moved their launch videos from YT to X.

An interesting problem I feel is that while on KZfaq it’s clear who’s the creator and who’s the commentator, on Twitter, the lines are a much more blurry, which causes a bunch of accounts, too, try to advertise themselves in the replies of viral posts, personally, I just mute the accounts that don’t post anything that adds the conversation of the original and it makes my experience a lot better

Hey, Colin and Samir! Just wanted to say your channel is an inspiration to someone like me who is literally starting out on KZfaq, it is fascinating that you got THE Elon Musk on a call. I feel like Twitter is entering a new era of trying to find out what its identity is going to become. Elon stated that he wants to make Twitter the-one-to-go platform for a lot of things including banking at the same time? It is going to be interesting to see how X evolves over time in the next 5-10 years.

29:46 - THIS is one of the most interesting parts of the video for me. I don't think we need to necessarily modify the content we are posting to Twitter/X in order to maximize views/watchtime. Instead, if you are going to modify the video, do so in a way that maximizes your *intended method of engagement.* Typically for video content, we default to "views" and "watchtime" as the intended methods of engagement. For Twitter/X, I think it's worth viewing conversation as the intended method of engagement. I think Colin and Samir are both correct here; I use Twitter for conversation, and those conversations live under video posts, but I use KZfaq for actually VIEWING the video (especially if I want to rewatch).

I also think there's a barrier to entry when it comes to being monetized on KZfaq. Not to say that becoming a partner is impossible for people SERIOUSLY pursuing content creation full-time on KZfaq. Rather, reaching that level on KZfaq so that one can start making ad revenue is something that I think allows KZfaq to have a better relationship with creators, especially those who put the time in making good videos. Does X/Twitter have similar requirements? If I posted my first video and it blows up, could I make a reasonable income from it (not $250k, obviously)? Great video.

KZfaq has set themself up as a historical viewing platform. It’s great for people who want to set a device down and come back later to pick up where they left off. X is great for current events up to the minute updates. I think one thing that wasn't really discussed here is that I personally think KZfaq and X users are completely different and mutually exclusive in many cases. I think its wise for creators to focus on both platforms not only because the network effect and everything y'all mentioned, but also because there are just tons of people that wont see the content otherwise. I for one do not use X and have no plans to use it, KZfaq is my only form of social media and I like it that way - but this is not the case fore everyone. So, from the outside looking in it seems worth it to engage with as many audiences as possible at the very least.

one issue I have is the way the X timeline refreshes, so I could be watching an interesting video, either directly from the timeline and the feed just randomly refreshes unprompted or I swipe back to the feed inadvertently and then it often refreshes. I'm not sure I'd often remember the name of the account I was watching and often once seen the tweet(?) no longer show - if you're not following the account. So as it stands I would likely just become frustrated trying to watch longform content and just keep to youtube rather than risk losing it midway through

I'm just trying to wrap my head around the fact that Elon actually gave any thought to anything he did for even a moment let alone the effort to set up a conference and ask questions; I think one of the interesting points that you missed is that MrBeast can't really be a model citizen for Twitter because Twitter didn't make him successful, no matter how well he does on the platform, he isn't proof that someone can start from nothing and build a consistently monetized audience on Twitter, he's proof that you can do that on KZfaq and do it so effectively that you can transfer that audience over to other platforms; to get into the deep end: I think X would have to come up with some kind of creative business model to capitalize on the fact that they're truly an "of the moment" platform, they pushed the biggest drivers of that kind of content/ conversation off of the platform (journalists and news organizations), and Elon is going to have to step aside or actually start caring about the *business* of this business, if he cared about the business, he would be moving differently, no company that aims to succeed operates this blindly and carelessly, Twitter isn't an actual player in the future of the creator economy because it doesn't want to be and it is not valuable enough to become one in spite of that fact

TikTok is starting to promote landscape long form video so I tried it and it’s been doing well. So in theory KZfaq creators can repost their 1080p landscape videos on TikTok and earn money on there as well. In the uk they are even experimenting with 30 minute videos. Here in the US for now it is 10 minutes I think. Perhaps this too is an attempt to bring in mid roll ads.

Twitch is probably an interesting platform for X to learn from or try to experiment with transferring community behaviors to X. The pinnacle of conversational and event-type engagement. For viewers, Twitter is not a platform for watching and discovering long-form videos, especially when the video has a pre-roll ad on it because then it just looks like a video ad in my feed at first glance and I'll quickly scroll away from it. The only way to see if it's an actual video I want to watch is to read the tweet too, which is lost hope if I'm scrolling away from an ad. KZfaq has this locked down with the ability for videos to have thumbnails and titles in a display designed for discovery. Then if there's a pre-roll ad on the video after I click through to it, I'm going to wait it out because I know good content is coming. Also, I mostly scroll through Twitter casually on the train while listening to music. If I come across a video, I scroll past it without ever giving it a second thought because I don't have the time or energy to sit down for a video like that whereas on KZfaq, I know what I am getting myself into when I open the website.

I agree with Twitter being a very good place to network and for discussion, I just at the moment don't see myself watching videos on the platform, and I think an issue with that is, I don't plan on going on twitter to watch long videos, I go on there to check tweets and to post tweets or my thoughts, which is a short task, compared to watching long videos, and KZfaq is something I go on while I'm eating or when I'm bored because I know I can reliably find content that I would be interested in to watch. Not focusing on the monetization aspect of Twitter, they need to focus on improving the creator eco system and the platform itself to host these videos for a simple cleaner watch.

News / Press Release type videos are great on X. An experience where comments (reply’s) are tied to a point in a video timeline-so it feels live-would be nice.

You also have to ask the question as to why people use Twitter and why people use KZfaq. when somebody is using KZfaq their intending to watch long content vs when somebody is on Twitter most of the time they’re intending to watch short form content, which is why when you’re scrolling on Twitter and you see that guy post his podcast you go to Spotify because you use Spotify to listen to podcast not Twitter

Twitter as is doesn't seem compatible with youtube content at all. Even short form is a stretch because viewer expectations are so wildly different. One thing I've always wondered though is why twitch hasn't gone the route of monetizing and expanding their vod content. I know it's costly but with how difficult it I'd to use ads on live content it seems like thst would br a good place to try. Basically doing what yt is already doing.

Long form works if they can create passive listening modes. Basically, where I can continue to browse while listening to the last piece of content. Most people ragged on Elon not understanding the nuance that you can't get from the questions people are asking Elon. Data points like this reveal additional frustration that he was dealing with and why he needed to quickly centralize decision-making. I did a lot of work trying to develop "model citizens" when developing a discussion platform circa 2010 and getting someone to a "model citizen" state was a critical part of our ladder of engagement. The more model citizens we could deliver to publishers, the better their owned audiences flurished.

I think part of the issue for alot of people in regards to the Twitter buyout is that for a long time they assuned that Elon was "their guy", but he isn't, he us his own person with his own priorities.

I think at around 24:23 you are mixing impression and views. MKBHD showed the detailed statistics about some videos and what twitter displays are the impressions of the video and not the actual views in contrast to youtube.

Could Twitter (X) monetize creators whose main platform is KZfaq by offering the ability to embed their KZfaq videos on their Twitter (X) profiles instead of having to post it separately to each platform? I do not mean posting the KZfaq link on your Twitter (X) profile that takes people off the platform but instead give you the ability to watch it natively within the app? Could Twitter (X) still run their ads and offer monetization to their creators?

A comment from the deep end here, you're not alone! I'm an old GenX'r so if a video doesn't offend me I'm usually in it until the end. This was really interesting! Also I really like the suggested logo, and it pinged my brain to merge Tweet and X into "TweX", pronounced "tweh-ks" as an alternative to "X". "TwiX" would be better but hello probably trademarked candybar. And then I could "twex" someone instead of "tweet" them, etc. Hmm.

In the deep end here. As a logo enthusiast, I love the idea here mentioned for the Twitter logo. It cooperates the new and the old together. And I wholeheartedly agree on the points in this video. The model citizen concept. And keeping up with the monetisation if they can would be tough if they cannot. To an extent. Nowadays, each platform is vastly different. So that could be a hurdle for them. But it depends on which direction they want to go. Also, not a fan of Twitter being named "X" either.

should a changing platform like twitter (latterly x) be considering the impending change of user devices and experiences when strategising into the next 5-10 years? from all the platforms so far, youtube seems best fit. we have had google cardboard support in the youtube app for years now, it's still viable to watch 180 degree stereo, you can stream and watch vr content from/to better and better devices. is it only youtube and facebook that's thinking new paradigms in terms of user experiences?

I've been a fan of KZfaq for long, not so much twitter (X). I hadn't gone on the app in like 10 years. Every time I open it Im bombarded with ads that are irrelevant, hateful comments/posts, and so much crap. Maybe it's because I haven't spent the time currating my feed? Nonetheles...Then, I'm watching Rhett & Link's live Good Mythical Evening and everything stops working. That's when I turn on twitter to find out what's going on after never using it. I think using it and monetizing it in a ways for news and live events is the best way for them to go.
