Samantha and her sister Sarah say their mother, Stacy, is very successful as a special education teacher and behaviorist, but when it comes to parenting their 33-year-old brother, Ben, that’s another story. They claim their mother has allowed Ben to live rent free for the past two years, while he lays by the pool doing nothing to contribute around the house. Stacy’s husband, Doug, says he moved out and refuses to come home until Stacy kicks his stepson out of the house. Stacy says everything she is doing for her son, including teaching him how to pay his bills and eat his veggies, is all part of getting Ben to stand on his own two feet. Ben insists he is not taking advantage of his mother’s hospitality and kindness; he is just stuck in a rut. (2219001RR)

People comments on this page are harmful and evil. If you haven't gone through what he has, sharing your opinion is unjust. His early years involved considerable difficulties, and his mother chose to let his abusive father stay, worsening the situation. Instead of removing her husband from the home, she sent her son to a boarding school where he faced severe abuse. Those of you suggesting abandoning him and leaving him on the streets are displaying the same lack of empathy as his father. This man is suffering like a veteran returning home after enduring hardships.

I was Ben! At one point in my life, i wouldn't take responsibility for anything. Wracked up soeeding tickets, car crashes and had 2 DUI's. My grandma felt really badly for my childhood and would bail me out constantly. But then, she got sick and passed away. Suddenly no one was bailing me out. My other family members had written me off and with good reason. Then 12 1/2 years ago, i met my significant other. I didnt change overnight though. It took 6 more years before i started to change. Got sober and changed everything. Been sober for 6 yrs. 8mo. And 2 days now. Still have the guy too, I'm so lucky. I couldn't get help till i hit my rock bottom though. Till I lost the one person who cared more about what happened to me than i did myself.

This mother let her son be abused by her partner. Now she’s parenting out of guilt. I can’t imagine being in this position, but there’s only one way to fix this problem and is to stop babying him and enabling him. She is essentially crippling him and he has no social skills and no life skills even as an adult. She’s keeping him dependent on her.definitely a toxic codependent relationship. I can see why those sisters seem so annoyed, unfortunately I would just avoid my mom and brother if this were my scenario.

Like I get it to a point, his father sounds horrible. The way he just came to not remember anything reminds me so much of my own mother. Except instead of her saying she doesn't remember, she just flat out says I'm lying and making stuff up. But as a 32 or 33 year old man, you are now an adult and are choosing not to get help or do some sort of therapy to be able to heal from that and start living your life. That is absolutely on him at this point. Also, how dare you have children when you refused to even take care of yourself and then expect somebody else to financially pay for them. It's disgusting. I wonder what the mothers or mother of his children think about it. Also, even though yes, he sounds like he got the brunt of his father's abuse, his sisters both grew up in that household too and had to witness it and probably were abused as well. They seem to have turned out responsible adults and parents, so that's really, again, not an excuse.
