We were hit by a storm which caused a severe rigging failure to our catamaran sailboat!
In this video we talk about what we think happened and caused this failure and we limp our disabled boat to safe harbor for the next round of wind.

as you discovered, the gull striker is not designed to accommodate side loads. As a cat owner, our boat response at anchor, with wind plus current, is anything but stable. You will notice under some conditions, the anchor chain will run under the boat, depending on current and wind. When this happens, the bridal will rub on the bowsprit whisper lines. This force will then transfer to the wire line on the top side of the sprit, and then want to pull sideways on the gull striker. you had winds over 40 kts. The forces become huge up there. The solution is to breakdown the bowsprit and stow it before the high winds. This will remove the sideload from the striker. Good luck! and we hope the broke castings come out of the tubes without fuss.

Hello, you have been thrown around quite a bit with this storm. Yes, you couldn't turn around the anchor and so the forces got in the way and the weakest part gave way. To communicate from the helm to the bow you should agree on a sign language for all the crew, because when there is too much wind or noise you will lose your strength shouting and your nerves will be put to the test and you will end up getting annoyed.... The sign language is very used in the construction industry with the crane operators, but also in Wall street and in all the financial platforms of the world where there is a lot of noise around. You just have to agree all together on the signs, (full back engine, back engine slowly, forward, slowly, more starboard, more port, stop, etc....) it's a learning, but very quickly rewarded. kisses to you all😘

Any dissimilar metals in contact with each other will cause galvanic corrosion. When we build pumping stations, we even isolate 304 alloy stainless steel from 316 alloy stainless steel from each other on brackish water projects.
@SaltyEscape
@SaltyEscape 10 ай бұрын
While you are 100% correct, that wasn’t the cause of this failure. Surprisingly the galvanic corrosion was minimal and only on the stainless bolts. The failure occurred because of extraordinary forces on this part of the rig that was not designed to handle it.

It looked like there was a carabineer holding your anchor bridal end to the bow?? If so, that would be a weak point. Probably a shackle would be more stout and heavy duty to take that load. If carabineer were to break, it would suddenly transfer to the load the windlass.....
@SaltyEscape
@SaltyEscape Жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, These carabiners are Kong Italy brand designed for this use. They hold about 8000 lbs each, 16000 lbs between them both. However, we have purchased a new bridle, which comes with new shackles. Hopefully the shackles will fit our existing bridle tangs. Ordinarily, I would agree with you, carabiners would be a terrible idea, if they hadn’t been designed for this purpose. 😊

I do like your episodes, but they could be less detailed on some things and if possible have a solution conclusion instead of 3-4 episodes to get you seagull striker repaired. There will be plenty of interesting events for future videos as you continue on your sailing adventure.

Hi Douglas, I wanted to follow up with you. This week my video is about our time at Jekyll island. The interest is terrible. It seems you are in the minority… unfortunately. 50% less views than typical is very disappointing after all the work we put into it.

@@SaltyEscape Sorry to hear this. My primary point was not to belabor a seagull striker repair. You own a catamaran, one of the most popular sailing vessels in the youtube universe, that is your draw as just about everybody who wishes to sail would like to sail a catamaran. Also, currently you are going down the ICW and most cruiser viewers may have seen dozen of such episodes and many of the locations along the way. It is the Bahamas and the Caribbean islands, I believe, that viewers are fantasizing about- the blue water, dolphins off the bows, white sand beaches and palm trees plus the occasional fixing your boat in exotic locations.

@@douglasrobbie9998 I hope you’re right! In real time we’re about to cross.. I’m doing engine checks this morning. Hopefully Tuesday. Things got sporty last week as we traveled off shore down the coast to Florida. I’m going to be moving the videos forward quickly to catch up to real time. The problem is we sat stationary for nearly a month waiting to get parts, fabricated and repairs completed.

@@SaltyEscape Here is my take. After Rving, you began a search for a sailboat mono or catamaran - that attracted a certain type of viewer/subscriber. You moved on to a "refitter of a catamaran mode" which kept many of the original viewers and attracted the DIY fix up a catamaran viewers. You are partly/mostly past that stage now and are in the "ICW south to about to cross to Bahamas" stage. Many of your viewers will stick with you and your challenge is to pick up viewers/subscribers/patrons for your "cruising in paradise" viewers. Some do this by wholesome family cruising with kids type of episodes, others do it with bevy of girl crew in bikinis or clickbait type of episode titles. You will need to find your niche. Gone with the Wynns were early with clean cut near newbies sailing to the Bahamas beginning with a northern to southern Abaco chain trip. The Berry Islands also offer a route less travelled start in the Bahamas. Eleuthera is less frequently travelled with the Exuma chain is interesting but is the route south and covered by nearly all YT cruisers. This is just my take and opinion and sorry for the length. Good luck with your crossing and don't do what Sailing EV did arriving in Bimini after dark with strong winds.
