Our Culture, Our Identity: The value of Greetings among the Luhya Community.
Greetings form an essential part any language and Culture of a people. Among the Bukusu and Luhya community especially, greetings are part of daily interactions.
Greetings among this community were performed in different ways according to one’s age, gender, ranks in the community and also the bond between particular individuals.
Basing on this requirement they could be carried out through; waving, word of mouth, tapping on the head, bowing, handshakes and kneeling.
Whenever greeting someone, you had to ensure that always you greet that person with the right hand. When greeting an elderly person, you were supposed to be upright and always face him or her directly to the eye
This was meant to ensure that the greeting is meaningful. You had to ensure that if you have a cap it should be removed or raised slightly above the head and stand and as you greet him or her while your left arm was touching the arm of your right hand-this to show respect.
