I’ve just discovered “Sailing Uma” via several episodes posted randomly on KZfaq. I’m currently stepping through the videos in sequence (have finished Step 11). I’m amazed at the knowledge you have of boat repair. Did this knowledge come from your architecture education, or from your life background? Astonishing. Here’s to more “Steps”. I’m way behind you, but I hope to slowly catch you. Great channel.

I recently came across your videos. Started watching more recent ones. Then decided to get the whole story, starting at Step 1 (so inspirational). In these early videos, Kika, you have a discernible accent. A lovely sounding accent. I never even detected it in your later videos. Perhaps a more Canadian accent, but always a beautiful woman. Your videos have to be at the top of the list of sailing videos, because of your "Just Do It" innovation, much of the ability no doubt from your architectural training, not to forget smarts of you both. Anyway just a short note. I see by the number of views that thousands agree with me.

Greetings from Colorado! Your channel has reawakened my gypsy soul. I grew up on Lake Erie and sailing was a weekend activity back in the day. I'm currently living in Southwest Colorado and a sailboat that I can tow with my Tacoma is now on my shopping list. If I ever relocate to the coast or ocean accessible waterway, I might buy something bigger.

I wanted to tell you guys about Stans no flat. I don't know if you have ever heard of it, but it's this liquid that you put in your inter tubes. It prevents flats. I trained for and raced two ironmans over two years and never got a single flat after I started using it. I don't work for them or any thing but It's a great product and it totally changed my bike riding life. I after seeing your funny flat repair montage I thought maybe you guys would want to know about it. Stan's no flat. Good luck.

Just stumbled across this. What a beautiful bond you two have to be able to work together like that and getting your hands dirty but share a common goal and have such great outlooks on life. There’s something to be said about living simply and being self sufficient. Enjoy every minute of it. And Uma... you are such a beautiful woman, I love seeing a woman who can fix things and do stuff most girls can’t. Your man has hit the jackpot with a girl so beautiful on the inside and out. I would be in heaven everyday with someone like you. Best to both of you!

Scaling down and getting rid of so much and living simpler is such an easy thing to do. I think more people are realizing and heading in that direction. I felt so free when I sold everything I owned and moved from Wisconsin to NW Florida to be near the ocean. People just couldn't believe we did it 😀

Might not be relevant now, but carrying a spare inner tube and changing that, then fixing the flat later is easier and faster. Good to know about that marina in case I ever need a good diy marina in Florida. Good thing you guys are young, and this is a adventure. Your attitude is remarkable and inspiring. Your videos continue to delight.Thanks for taking the time out of your quite busy lives to post these.

To supplement your drinking water needs, I would suggest a Sawyer 4L water filtration system. Completely gravity powered and can make 4L of drinking water in about 20 minutes. I put together this system along with a carbon filter just before the Sawyer filter. Reason for this is that I prebleach my water (river, lake, and rain) to kill ALL living things including viruses. 2 drops per liter, plus a few extra per liter for punky water. Let that sit at least 1/2 hour or more all stirred up. You can do this part in bulk on deck. Then just fill the top bag with the bleached water and let it filter while you diddle with other chores. The lower bag has a nice petcock to easily drain in to a potable container. Just keep filling the top bag and emptying the bottom bag into other storage safe containers. How it works, the bleach kills the bacteria, cysts, and viruses and sterilizes the water. Then the charcoal will remove organics and the bleach from the water. The Sawyer filter alone can remove all the bacteria and cysts, but not the viruses (unless you pony up for the filter that does, but it filters A LOT slower). This system makes some of the cleanest greatest tasting water ever. The cool thing is that the Sawyer filter can filter a million gallons of water, but you can also back purge it with your cleaned filtered water to rejuvenate it as needed. It may come in handy while out at sea too, if you can collect rain water during storms.
@SailingUma
@SailingUma 9 жыл бұрын
+insaynbcr Thanks for the advice! The plan is to install rain catchment on deck and prefillter into our tanks for dishes and showers. Then post filter for drinking. But that will all come later.

Hey guys watching some of your older videos over again. They do make a hand washing maching available on eBay for 15.98/the buy it now price. I own one and it works great. It's blue and looks somewhat like a plunger but is designed to airate the water and agitate it at the same time. It's designed to work perfectly with a 5 gallon bucket and I just cut a hole in the lid to match the diameter of the wood handle to keep the splashing down. It works really great and only takes about 10 minutes start to finish a load depending on how dirty the clothes are. It's also a good work out for your arms....ha ha! Take care, your friend Bill from ODIN

i know this is an old video, but for anyone who cares, use the old flat tubes as tire liners, i cut the old tubes open and install the new tube inside the old tube then put them in the tire so the new tube has a little more protection, also check the tire really good before putting new tube in as those sand spurs and thorns can still be poking into the inside of the tire and will just flatten new tube.

Hi Guys Love what you are doing. Can I add a few comments please. :- that patch in front of the keel is not strong enough you need way more than 5 layers of cloth, (this is a high stress area and also a likely point for impact from floating debris) I would suggest cleaning the inside area and filling with a good strong mix of epoxy thickened with some glass fibres not just filler, also when laying up the glass it is important to use the special roller to press the glass down into the lamination, you can't do it effectively with your fingers the layers need to be forced together to make an effective bond, it should be transparent not white when done. Also chopped strand mat (CSM) is for use with conventional polyester resin not epoxy, it has a binder that holds the mat together this dissolves with polyester resin but not with epoxy (as it is solvent free), it is ok to use with epoxy for non structural fabrication but if you want strength you must use woven cloth. Also latex gloves should not be used with epoxy try to get polythene ones, a good tip is to start with about 3 or 4 pairs on and when they get soiled remove the outer pair and carry on. If you can get a copy of the Gougeon brothers book (not sure I have spelled this correctly) on Epoxy and GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) construction it will help you greatly. Another tip I can pass on is when using Chopped Strand Mat tear it rather than cut it this gives a feather edge that blends in when adding layers of glass to give an invisible edge with less stress. Best of luck Fair Winds
@SailingUma
@SailingUma 9 жыл бұрын
+sailing cacique Thanks for the suggestions. We try to keep our videos short and entertaining, so we often omit some of the more mundane details. So let me clarify a bit. We cut the entire keel repair process in the video way down. The front repair has 14 layers of 22oz cloth on the outside. About 5/8" thick, to match the existing hull. We will however be adding additional layers in the bilge along with a few other epoxy project, but we can do that in the water. I can assure you the glass mat was thoroughly wetted out with epoxy, it is very thick, tightly woven bi axial glass with CSM on the back, so it never turns fully transparent. I have found that the roller often causes more problems than is solves. I do, however, use it on some glass projects when it is beneficial. CSM works great as a filler with both poly resin and epoxy. But you are correct, epoxy doesn't dissolve it's binding agent, all that means is that it maintains a little more stiffness that if we used poly resin. However, it is the same glass we used in the bilge and we had no problem forming it to a 3/4" radius and other complex curves. It is merely a filler layer. The 18oz stitched biaxial cloth on the backside provides the strength. This particular cloth is stitched together, so you can't "pull it apart" meaning scissors were the only way to cut each layer. Why not use latex? The 3 boxes we have gone through in the last few months have held up great! I hope that helps clarify things a bit.
@sailingcacique6343
@sailingcacique6343 9 жыл бұрын
+Sailing Uma Just pulled this off the internet. "amines" used in epoxy hardeners will pass through latex gloves) In the workplace try to avoid exposure to epoxy resins, however this may not be practicable. Identify potential sources of exposure using Material Safety Data Sheets; these are required for all chemicals and substances that you may come into contact with in the workplace. To reduce exposure, use special gloves (nitrile rubber or nitrile butatoluene gloves) to protect the hands. Rubber (latex) gloves do not help as the resin penetrates through the glove in 30 seconds. Vinyl and neoprene rubber are not totally protective. So, your latex gloves are protecting you for 30 seconds. Also, it seems hardeners are found to be still active up to a week after mixing a batch. After a week, the cured epoxy/hardener concoction is basically inert and harmless, save any irritation from sanding dust. Protect yourself. Epoxy is nasty, nasty stuff. Ask any of my friends who have become sensitized... I use polythene gloves and usually put on about 5 pairs at once and dispose the outer ones as they get soiled.. Fair winds.

My sailboat is still in Salem NJ : ( and I located a sailboat mover to bring it to Maryland requiring 4 permits, one for NJ, one for DE, one for PA and one for MD eeeekkkkkk! I'm gonna start doing vids once the boat is here in Maryland and maybe one introduction video. How did you learn to make boat repairs? Did it come from a book or did you research on the internet? How about the electrical wiring, did you replace the old wiring or simply upgrade certain areas?

Thank you for your comment and reaching out :) As far as boat repairs: Not sure if this answer would help but learning how to fix our boat came from a big blend of 1)skills we already have from repairing houses back in Atlanta 2) books 3)google 4)youtube 5)facebook groups and people we've met... Our boat came with decent wiring, only some of it needed to be upgraded.

We don't need to spend money on a trailer or bike rack just to make a 5 minutes bike ride slightly better, when carrying our water and food in our backpacks works just fine and is really not a struggle. We do appreciate the advice, but we much rather put all our pennies and dimes into getting Uma ready to sail!

Dan and Kika, it seems to me your adventure is well underway right now. Minus the boat being in the water...lol. I too am on jack stands, but I would rather work on the boat on the hard and not bouncing around inside. I was sailing Saturday...what a great day, had her laid over and flying through the water. It was a friends boat and he asked me, "where did you learn that?" I of cause tell him KZfaq...lol. By the end of the day, he would say...I know youtube.

+Larry Wills Thanks! Glad to hear you had a fun day on the water. We love youtube, google, and good old books to help us get through tricky projects.

Hey Guys , Great Channel you have here, I've been watching from the beginning. My wife and I did a trip from N. Michigan to Daytona 5 years ago. Back home now following other sailors. Just a bit of constructive critisism if I may? I like to see straight video a little more, real talking and action, less music and less narration, I guess more "real life" if I may. Many of us "watchers have been there" and TV show style gets old. Keep up the good work, I do like to follow and will continue no matter what. NOT SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR IN FOR,,,,,, Ha. can't wait for the next video ! Capt. Dean S/V Rubaiyat ps. you can see our trip on my channel when your really bored :_

We could indeed buy a lot of things that would make our lives easier, but its being able to work with what we've got that makes it all worth while ....

+alan mckinnon Yes, we work. On our boat, on our internal peace, on escaping the rat race....and sometimes even for clients who pay us to design their dream house! The few design projects we get each year keep us going. But none of it feels like "work". We love what we do and wouldn't have it any other way.
