There is so much innovation in experimental aviation right now that I am envious. By contrast, in the certificated aircraft world, the only innovation I am seeing, outside of avionics, is at the very top end of the spectrum -- $700k Cirrus and similar. I would like to see a lot more innovation imported from experimental (and kit) aircraft design into the certificated world. Particularly urgent is innovation in driving down manufacturing cost.

Great video and loved the walk around, love the bob barrows designs. I believe the wing is underrated but the landing gear although perfectly adequate could use a lot more width and travel for backcountry/no runway landings. I have heard stories that these are real workhorses in the missionary fields and that even the worst runways where no problem for them. I believe the bearcat is the best 4 seat experimental backcountry plane out there but its not a big category. I am really looking forward to seeing a lot more about the patrol. Thank you. Shalom

After your stopover in Rochester, as you head east you might consider stopping in at: KSDC Williamson-Sodus Airport Heading 085° Distance 25.2 - From ROC (fuel will be cheaper than ROC). Assume flying club there ... spent many fun hours as a flying club member. If you are able to stop in, tell them that Archie says hello and misses all of them. BTW nine years ago, in the middle of our move from the area, I had a retina detached which resulted in the the sale of my 172XP (N736ES) .. .last time I checked its still part of their club fleet. Safe travels

Great vid, John I have joined your channel in eager anticipation of more Bearhawk Patrol material. Very exciting plane, which I think does more things well than anything else on the market. It’s like a Vans RV of STOL planes: Great short-field capability, range, fast, robust, wide cabin, great climb. For my money, I’d say it unequaled in value for those who need or want a strong plane they can put on bushwheels, skis or floats. In fact Im so convinced, I did spend my money to buy a quickbuild kit. By the way, my experience has been just stellar with both Mark Goldberg who builds the kits and Mike Silvernagle at Bearhawk Canada who I bought mine from. The help they have provided so far has vastly reduced any anxiety I felt taking on a project of this scope. I’m really pleased to see this video series take place; there’s just no substitute for professionals flying the plane hard, over time, and reporting back to the flying community. The manufacturer clearly has a lot of faith in his product. It would be difficult to subject the plane to this level of scrutiny, were this not the case.

Dig the Bearhawk, great looking plane. WOuld be nice to see you put wider gear with bigger tires and longer suspension for those off airport landings. Hopefully you can get the stall speed down to a reasonable speed with wing mods

Because of your video I called Bearhawk today. It looks like the best of both worlds. Really fast AND a STOL. I talked to Mark and he said I was the first to call because I’d seen your video. I watch all your videos and this was great information so I thank you for sharing. I’m in Alabama at the Gulf of Mexico. It’s beautiful here if you ever get this way. Anyway, I’d like to know your schedule in case you get anywhere close to here so I could see your new ride. Hope so. I’d travel quite a ways to see it. Keep up the great work!

And to think..I've successfully negotiated my way through the day to day trenches of adult existence believing otherwise! While we're on, may I point out to you that planes are in fact woodworking tools.. see the difference? That being the case, I feel my description of a bird is a little closer than yours..that of a flying woodworking tool. Also, as you appear to have a meticulous attention to detail, would you please explain your last sentence which doesn't appear to make much sense as it reads that airplanes do not have any other machine?!!! Finally, and this is just my own observation.. I bet you're a 'wow' at parties!

Hi Jon, I know this is off topic but you have been a great help so far, I hope you can clear this for me, I'm a rusty pilot getting current after many years of inactivity and I need a headset, I hear a lot of good things about ANR but there is always a comment saying "good luck hearing the engine" Personally I like to stay in touch with the sounds of an aircraft, will I be able to hear the engine with an ANR set? perhaps more important, will I be able to hear the stall warning? do you think I would do better with a high end passive set? I noticed from your videos that you use a lightspeed set, if I go with ANR I like the lightspeed sierra, what do you think?

For someone with close to 5000 hours of Super Cub time, the numbers you gave are really interesting, especially the cruise speed versus fuel burn. What do you attribute the reduced drag to?

Less draggy gear (no cabane), two less lift struts, and a Riblett metal covered (versus fabric) airfoil is what I hear.

I'm not sure what the empty weight is, but it's likely around 1100-1150lbs. Gross weight on the patrol is 2000lbs.

If you go ahead with a CFI, one thing to always remember is never let a student fly you into a position from which you cannot recover.
