It's been a year since RSM got her Omaha coop by Rugged Ranch. Now that it's been in Jurasschic Park for a while, do we still like it? (Yes!) Check out this tour and demo of the Omaha backyard chicken coop, what we like (and don't like), and the upgrades we've done to make it even better. Note that this is NOT a sponsored post so as always you can trust RSM to be honest and helpful. We're glad you're here, and we hope you subscribe!

You were the first thing to pop up when I searched for this coop for reviews. We had a big homemade contraption at our last home but we are just now ready to get started with chickens in our new home and this will be perfect.

great update! I'm slowly putting my "Ohmaha" together and appreciate you showing all the upgrades and hacks you did. Mine will be outside but under a metal roof that's over my pen and that should help keep the 'weather' out! I have 4 hens now but will be getting 4 more chicks soon. : )

I just love your set up and all of your ideas! You really made this coop something special. We have a small store bought coop/run for our silkies but built a coop/run for out larger hens. It’s nice if you have the time and skills to build a good one but with modifications these store bought coops are a good option. I just wish the wood wasn’t so thin. My silkies did good all winter in WI in it though. Used lots of plastic. I love you videos and hope your son is doing well!

Thanks so much! This is so kind. We have fun out here too and trying to make it as cute as possible. And I agree with the coop quality too.

Thanks for this review, it’s great and love how you share the improvements you made. I’m planning on getting for my flock of 6 and this review helped made the decision. I wish you had tips for chickens in the winter.

Hi! I do have info on how to help chickens in the winter. We don’t have feet of snow here but we do get below freezing. Don’t worry though, as long as the flock has clean water and food (not frozen) and a safe dry place to get out of the elements, they do just fine in winter!

Great review of this coop! We just moved up into the mountains, and aside from tips from locals, this review really helps with considerations for modification. I am going to check your other videos concerning the automated door and adding solar, but, that one section with all the tech does seem like a convenient compartment for stuff like that!

Hey! Yeah for a coop kit it’s really well made, especially the design with two “floors” of roost bars and all the access doors. The only question now is if you can get it at a good price! Let me know if you have questions about the mods!

@realsimplemama
@realsimplemama 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Oh I’m so glad they’re helpful. I’m always here if you have questions down the line. As far as the sealant, it really does not matter as long as it is an exterior sealant. The one we have right now is by Minwax and it is labeled a clear satin spar urethane, which protects from sunlight, rain and moisture, and temperature changes.

I have 4 Easter Eggers and want to get 2 or 4 orphingtons. But eventually want all orphington. I'm wanting to get a coop that will grow with me. And I figure a 10'× 20' run attached for the girls to roam. Lots of toys and a nice dust bath and per he's in the run.

I've had mine for 3 and a half years, and I moved it with a hand truck around my farm during that time. Well, it fell apart last week. Granted, I should of strengthened it with plywood gussets... it was on my list to do.. oh well. Over the years I've had to do a lot of repair. But I'm looking to buy another one, but this time I will be putting it together with glue along with the screws provided and I will strengthen the corners with plywood gussets. I paid $358.00 for it from Family Farm and Home when it was on sale. They now have them listed at $499.00, but are out of stock. just my 2cents worth.

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that. Reinforcing is a good idea - you could also buy longer screws, and maybe weatherproofing it will help the wood stay stronger? I know all coop kit prices have gone up and it’s ridiculous. I hope you’re able to get one again! ✌🏼❤️🐓

I'm thinking of mounting the coop to a 4×4 all around the coop then papers over a wire ground cover. Yep. I'm safety conscious.

This may sound weird but I'm looking at this coop for my pot belly pig. I want to be able to leave her out in my backyard and I think this would be perfect to give her some shade underneath as well as a warm house in the winter and then she has the full backyard as her run. Think it would hold 150 lb pot belly pig?

@realsimplemama

Hi! You can look it up here on my channel - it does fit if you make a basic wood frame around the doorway. Mine is Rural 365 but it does have another name (got confusing with the brands as you’ll see when you look up the video). ✌🏼❤️🐓

Probably a crazy question, when you have the two levels of perches, how do they not poop on eachother?

Ummmmm. They don’t. 😄😄😄 $hit happens! But it’s not common and their feathers are waterproof so I very rarely see anything stick.

Hi! Old video I know -- but I'm wondering what is that material you put to extend the roof above the nesting boxes? I'm getting this coop set up in the next few days and I'm not sure what to tell the people at the store what I'm looking for...the keywords I'm putting in Google aren't finding it. Is it a kind of underlayment or the water/ice shield? Or something else?

Hi! I have a coop playlist which has the modifications that I did, but originally it’s a gutter/roof piece. ✌🏻❤️🐓
@gabrielleleigh35
@gabrielleleigh35 3 ай бұрын
Thanks...I'm thinking if I can't find the rubbery piece you have to just bend up some metal flashing like a gutter over the nesting boxes as well as the doors, figure that'd also do the trick

Hi! There’s pine shavings in the nesting boxes and PDZ horse stall refresher under the roosts. Avoid cedar as the dust in it is dangerous to chickens.

Honestly no - it’s a great setup as long as you get a good price. Best coop kit I’ve seen. All the roost bars and space, and all the access doors. I did do a few hacks like modifying the roost bars, making the extra corner into storage (chickens can’t access it now), sealing it… but overall it’s awesome design.

Is there a door at the top of the ramp for extra security at night
@realsimplemama

No there isn’t. I have an automatic coop door that locks down (I have a video about it if you want to see) and the Aivituvin coop that I have does have a locking door at the top of the ramp if you want to see that too!

How high do you place your watered/ feeder on blocks?
@realsimplemama
@realsimplemama Жыл бұрын
I try to do about a foot or so but it’s not precise 😎 just depends on which flagstone/bricks I have laying around! ✌🏻❤️🐓 and some waterers/feeders can be hung, but they’re so heavy (mine are at least ten pounds/five gallons) that I worry it’ll rip out the frame it’s hanging on!

You’re so welcome! I feel like it’s better for the chickens to have things off the ground. And you can always place a tray or even a cookie sheet under the feed to save what falls (some chickens can be really messy!).
