Let the gardening begin! Our first spring at our cottage home! We're so excited at the beauty that is sprouting up from the ground around us! Everywhere we look we see new plants and flowers budding, with the birds chirping above.
The plan is to reclaim some old gardening beds and start a garden. We'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas about what we should plant both in the garden and around the house.
Hope everyone has been well! Thanks for watching! ❤️

Moss is always better than grass, for so many different reasons! After all the woods are where moss is at home! Biggest always working with nature and your environment, rather than forcing something that will be hard to maintain if it's not natural to it's environment! So things like berries, mushrooms, wild garlic, different types of lettuce and chard, potatoes and the like will work well! You live in such a beautiful, rich diverse environment, which you can use to your advantage! There are some wonderful books out there specifically on forest gardening!😇

So lovely. Best gardening advise I can give is - if you can resist - take a year and observe. Where is the sun in relation to your beds. Where is it in the morning, afternoon and evening. Does it change drastically as the season progresses? Are some beds sunny all day or do they lose the sun after only a few hours. This year, fix the beds and prepare your soil. Next summer you will have a good idea of what you can plant where, based on sunlight requirements.

Grass isn't native. Leave the beautiful moss. Research before adding plants, as many popular ones can be invasive. Try to find a local native plant nursery.

As I've mentioned before as Anne's dear friend I visited often to her cottage but only in Summer, Fall and Winter. It was lovely to see the land and how it looked in the spring. It would mean a lot to Anne, the original owner, to know how much you value the land. Stay well.

Fellow Vermonter here! Leave the moss! Best lawn I ever had had large patches of moss. This Fall plant some peonies. They will take a year or two to bloom, but will give you years of enjoyment with beautiful, fragrant blooms. I would also plant a lilac bush ( give it plenty of room as they can get very large) and perhaps a forsythia for early Spring color. Bleeding Heart is a traditional favorite in Vermont and you can usually find someone willing to share part of a plant. I would use the raised beds for veggies if you have any interest in that. Just be aware you will need to put up some kind of fencing to keep the wildlife out. I have been gardening in Vermont for most of my 70 years, so if I can help in any way, please ask!

Liked your comments, except the forsythia. It's nice to see all the yellow flowers in the springtime, but it grows so fast, and spreads everywhere and quickly gets out of control!

You have a lovely woodland setting around your home . My suggestion is to keep the natural touch going. In nature you do not see straight lines so I suggest removing the wood raised beds and replace with the stones similar to the other areas. The other thing is to consider using the potting shed to keep chickens. A few chickens will give you eggs and endless fertilizer. Regular composting will boost your woodland soil and make things flourish. Best of luck to you .

I'm in NH so we have similar soil etc. I planted my first garden with great success last year and doubled it this year. We also have raised beds and we filled them with organic soil and compost. When I learned about gardening, especially raised bed gardens, the one takeaway I found helpful was to companion plant. Some vegetables take and give different things from the soil, so you need to be aware of that. As an example, I have all of my herbs in one box, but some require more water than others, so I pay attention to how I water. My basil, which is an annual anyway, I plant with my tomatoes, beans, and zucchini. Tomato and basil are excellent companions. We have a variety of greens: lettuces, kale, and spinach in another. And lots of cucumbers and leftover greens in another. Water deeply instead of often and you'll do fine. And the ferns are absolutely gorgeous! Wait till they fill out; I love mine. Happy planting!

Spring is magical in New England! Your cottage is really charming. I think daffodils (there are a zillion varieties) would look awesomeespecially the yellow and white varieties next to the dark house and the bright green vegitation. You can plan them in borders and the naturalize then throughout the yard. Check out the chapel at the Von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe. It is just beautiful!!!!

Green & red peppers are very easy to grow, if you like them. One time I was making spaghetti and instead of tossing the green & red pepper seeds away, I tossed them into some soil outside just for fun. I had an abundance of peppers growing that looked and tasted better than supermarket peppers. Cheers!

Wow! What a beautiful home! As a 10+ year farmer & gardener I reccomebed getting your perennials (plants that come back year after year) if first! Asparagus, strawberries, raspberries, lavender, fruit trees, etc. This way in the future, when seasons are busy or hard you will have them as a reliable source of joy & nourishment! Also, good soil is a foundation of a good garden. I always reccomend adding good compost to any garden. That way your plants have food to grow big & strong! Springtime at your cottage is beautiful and I hope you are settling in? You could grow runner beans, peas - these are easy to grow as is lettuce, chard and herbs. I wonder if roses will grow? Peonies are good and they come up year after year. You could plant some fruit trees too - in your opening sequence, I saw an apple tree with its beautiful blossom. When planting veggies, remember to plant French Marigolds in the same bed as the bugs will be attracted to them and not eat your precious crops. Have lavendar by your house because it keeps the mosquitoes at bay and the flowers can be dried and used in the house.

Vegetables need full sun to grow well. Full sun is 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. Watch how the sun crosses your property and find the right spot. If those raised beds have been there for many years, the surrounding trees may have grown to shade that spot and will need to be moved to a sunnier place. The hostas and ferns that are growing around the base of your home is perfect. If you had shrubs and bushes the snow would have half destroyed them with broken branches and split wood. Just keep adding daffodil bulbs in the fall, and summer perennials like daisies and coneflowers which will die back in the fall, and return larger the following spring/summer. Get to know your growing zone, how many growing days you have and when your first frost date usually is. Learn how many days to harvest certain veggies. Count back from your first frost date and see if you have time to grow that veg. No since in growing something you don't have time to bring to a harvest before the frost takes it out.

I agree wholeheartedly with Raea's comment ... permanent edibles (Berries fruit tree? ) will free you from from the work and maintenance of annuals like most veggies and you would have to cage them from the rabbits deer etc etc.. maybe an herb box .. the forest floor is its own ecosystem and best not disturbed.. I would learn foraging before jumping into a veggie garden... It is best to watch a property in it's full cycle of seasons for what it already has, its sun patterns , and where the water collects before designing...

Such a beautiful landscape - without doing anything else it looks gorgeous. I think you could add another layer to the parameters of the large raised bed to define it better and raise it a little more. I would start out slowly with a few basic summer vegetables. As for ornamental plants and flowers the best thing is to stick to what is native in your area. The ferns and hostas are an example of that and will keep coming back with little effort. Enjoy your amazing surroundings.

I see Ostrich ferns! Moss prefers acidic soil but that’s no means a given. Moss will grow in alkaline soil if it’s heavily compacted like clay or laden with moisture. Your backyard can be a mix of both, just feet apart. Buy a quality test kit to determine your pH values. Cold hardy hydrangeas love moisture, and depending on the pH will affect color on the big showy mop heads. They will like your filtered sunlight too!

lovely space! I'm by no means an expert gardener either, but if I had that space I would trial veggies that you two love to eat (maybe start with lettuce/high-value items) in the raised beds, then look into permaculture techniques specifically a food forest that can be low maintenance (once setup). You could also let some of your favorite crops go to seed (if open-pollinated) and naturalize them in other garden beds. Canadian permaculture legacy on YT has some great videos on those techniques. Brie the plant lady (also on YT) has great ideas for incorporating food into flower beds.

Start with some table scraps that you can salvage and replant or start with a seed and you can innovate a “greenhouse” over them so it’s a controlled moisture environment and when one sprouts you can plant it in the ground. But I suggest you see what grows best based off where you’re at on the map

What beautiful property! I would suggest you find what garden zone you live in. Looks like Vermont has a short growing season. I would suggest you go to garden centers close to you, they will be selling plants that are good for your area. Don’t spend any money yet. Research first. You want think about a color scheme or pallet so it doesn’t start looking out of place. The natural look is so pretty. See what plants you can grow in the different seasons so you have interest year round. Under planting the taller trees with ornamental ones will give you pretty spring color. You want to think about how far away is your hose for watering. Light is huge! Research each area for how many hours sun hits there per day. Go to local gardens in the different season and take notes as well as pictures of what you like and don’t like. All of these are just suggestions, I love to garden but no formal training. A bird bath in the center of the 4 gardens beds that are already there would look so pretty. Focal points in a garden add so much interest. And bird feeders from spots you guys like to set so you can watch them. You will want to attract the birds to your garden they eat bugs! Can’t wait to see what you do your possibilities are endless. Also research KZfaq for gardeners in your garden zone to see what you like and don’t before starting anything. Garden books written for your zone are a huge help to. Research, research, research. Thanks for letting us tag along! Oh you also want to think if you want it to stay a cottage feel, gardening will enhance that look or take it in a different direction.

If you want to grow food and flowers, you might need to fence your garden areas to protect them from deer, woodchucks, and other critters that will treat what you plant as a gourmet outdoor cafe, devouring whole sections (deer) or taking bites out of everything and leaving you the rest (woodchucks). Wonderful property in a wonderful state. Happy spring in your slice of cabin paradise.

Thanks Barbara. I agree, we would need to put up some deer fencing probably. Those pesky critters would have a feast!

Beautiful !!! Maybe you could use the larger garden bed for vegetables like tomatoes & peppers. And one of the rock lined beds for herbs & one for flowers. And last but not least, the final bed for brassicas or blueberries. 🍅🫑🌶🥦🥕🥒

Soooo beautiful!! Living Traditions Homestead uses woven weed fabric to stop weeds - they have great success with it. We have 2 tomato plants & 2 bell pepper plants in fabric containers & have 1 bell pepper & about 4 tomatoes growing, so we have no advice!! Failure!! 🤣🤣🤣 Good luck with your garden!

Don't fight mother nature .. let miss grow where it wants... Because there is shade n moisture...... So unless u want to chow down lots of trees n remove moisture.. the moss grows.... AND u don't need to mow it..... Recommend leave it alone...... Chart ur sun movement..... N plant garden in area that has 6,8 hrs sun....... Plant ferns etc in shade.... You have a beautiful site Don't rune it. By forcing ur will.

Watch the light in the areas you're thinking of making into a garden and remember by summer the trees will be in full canopy. You might look into "permaculture" and depending on your area set aside places for fruit and nut bearing trees, a place for berries like Saskatoons, Raspberry canes even Honeysuckle. You can always use raised gardens, or trundle gardens to plant this year while you observe your growing and harvest seasons. Most of all, have fun, plant what you think is best and enjoy this exceptionally gorgeous place! *ps - How many acres are you on? Do you know how hardy your plants need to be based on your area? That will help you in finding plants too!

Hey if you plan to garden checkout the permaculture techniques they will be quite beneficial for you and the property both ecologically and economically Plant only native species and few foreign species too. And try to keep the place as natural as possible. God bless love to both of you ❤️

Those “ raised beds” will not work unless you develop some arms that are 6 feet long. There is no way to reach the center unless you walk in them which defeats the purpose of having raised beds. It’s likely the reason they were neglected. Start from scratch, build them 4x8 ft and higher sided. Watch the sun and where it lands throughout the day as the trees finish leafing out. The front of your cottage is obviously very shady. Also that moss is probably something you’ll need to get used to with all of the trees around your house. Fighting it can often be a loosing battle unless you’re willing to sacrifice some trees but I personally don’t mind some moss in the lawn at all. We live on a heavily trees property.

They could also make some paths with boards or flat stones for walking if starting from scratch sounds like too big of a project.
@donnasteele4631

@@ausernameofsorts I actually did that once. We’ve been gardening in raised beds for about 14 years now. The second year in my husband built me a fifth bed because I wanted more growing room and he decided to make it extra big for me. It was a pain to use for a long time. We actually got rid of it finally this spring..The paving stones up the middle we’re always getting buried in soil and it was just plain awkward. 4x8’s are perfect and super easy to build.

Hey Palmer& Alex(🥰🥰) Have you two been hibernating??? Good to see a new video... If I were you two I’d bulldoze the who yard and put in a Olympic size swimming pool 🏊‍♂️!!!!😂😂😂 Serious I’d clear a few trees and let some sunlight in your yard... that would help with your garden and also you’re damp moss problems!!! It might just be getting a little overgrown... Good hearing from ya!!!!
