This is an 'Out of the box' video where I showcase something that is out of the ordinary and seldom seen in real life. Today the model is a Coronation Coach used by Queen Elizabeth during her Coronation on the 2nd of June 1953. Also known as the 'Gold State Coach' it was used on the occasions of both the Queen's Silver Jubilee and Golden Jubilee. The original can be seen up close at the Royal Mews in Buckingham Palace, London as a tourist attraction.

My father was assigned to USAFE, stationed at Molesworth AB, Cambrideshire, UK at the time of the coronation. Owing to the professional photo equipment my father used, he got in with the press corps to photograph the Queen during her coronation tour. The set this fellow sent to you is worth a small fortune on today's collector market. It's quite a remarkable historical piece.

Thoroughly enjoyable. And I appreciate the amount of respect you gave the Queens coach. I am not a Briton but I am facinated with her Monarchy. I do remember hearing of her complaint of the Coronation ride she took in the coach. As you may be aware, Netflix has a somewhat Hollywood version of her reign in The Crown. Great fun and while artistic license has been taken with her life, they hit the high points well. That ride seemed to be more uncomfortable not only due to the poor suspension but perhaps to the weight of what was happening to her. Becoming Queen at such a tender age while mourning her father. Must not have been easy. Thanks for this series. This was a special one.

What a spectacular model--and a wonderful gift! (BTW, in the 1980s (and perhaps to this day), a life-size duplicate of the carriage sat in the lobby of a hotel in Lake Havasu, Arizona. My husband and I came across it unaware and it was a jaw-dropping surprise. It was part of the same community hosting the rebuilt London Bridge.)

I had one of those as a child but alas it got broken as did many of my lead soldiers. Thinking back I suppose it was inevitable that it would not survive in the hands of a youngster but then we might not have appreciated it's value. Lead was used a lot in toys at that time and I remember my parents stopping me putting my fingers in the mouth after paying with these items. I remember watching the Coronation on my Aunt's tiny little Black and White TV with a magnifier on the front whilst my cousin peeped through the bars of his playpen. I seemed to remember that it was a very wet day in London which must have added to the burden of those poor horses. Thanks for an enjoyable video and I have seen other examples of your work- I love them all.

That was really interesting. When I was a kid, over 50 years ago, my parents had one of these that we were not to touch under threat of a miserable death. The primary difference with theirs was a lot of very detailed murals painted on the side panels. It was metal as well but no idea what kind. Anyhow, interesting to see a model of it again, thanks so much for sharing.

Me too! LOL All Marty's talk about Lead reminded me of the lead tooth paste tubes we used up until the early 1960's. Lead leeched out into the tooth paste and by the time you got to the end of the paste in the tube, it was GREY with lead! LOL When toilet paper got low or unavailable, cut up squares of newspaper printed with lead based ink was the next option! Wiped off the poo, but left your bum (and your hands) black with lead ink! LOL Lead was everywhere!

I've been to the Royal Mews and seen the real coach. As stated it weighs 4 tons but has NO BRAKES which is why it does not go above walking pace. Another piece of trivia, the Postilion's left boot heel has a steel top so that his lower leg does not get crushed between the horses. As a side note, my wife's uncle was a designer for Britain's and her father had a magnificent collection of military items including the original motorised trailer for military vehicles as well as a production one. Besides all that, he also had a collection of Britain's houses. Some of his soldiers are on display at Bletchley Park Code Breaking Museum. The rest were supposed to come to the wife after his death, but we couldn't get from New Zealand to the UK and what happened to his collections is unknown to us. We have a large lead collection here of the Home Farm series and the Zoo. Arthur from Waikanae.

Matchbox - well, Lesney, really - made the coronation coach in two sizes in 1953 (and then much later produced the Model of Yesteryear Y66 version). The larger one you illustrated with the side chains, and a smaller one with just a central draw bar. So that's three more versions for you to look out for (plus the Benbros copy and the similar Crescent version!).
