Marty's Matchbox Makeovers

Marty's Matchbox Makeovers

11 ай бұрын

This little beauty was sent to me by Brian May, a viewer from Oregan. Brian found this Matchbox model whilst he was metal detecting, he has his own metal detecting youtube channel called 'Dirt Bandit Outdoors'. On one of his videos he shows this model as one of his finds for the day. You can watch it via the link below.
Ordinarily a model in this condition would be cast aside but thankfully Brian decided to send it to me to give it a second chance. It was not the easiest makeover and, as is becoming normal these days, there were a few hiccups along the way.
I was reminded that I had a metal detector myself which had been stored away for the last 3 years. I was inspired to brush off its dust and cobwebs and take it out to find my own piece of treasure. Thanks also to Darren Deans from Manchester, UK, who sent me the other A50 that is featured in this makeover.
I hope that you enjoy this episode as much as I did making it. Marty.

In my mind I always end up back in the 1960s in 'Timothy Whites' the Chemist, the display cabinet is on the wall and it is full of matchbox cars, all in the little boxes. Still an exciting thought to this day.

I was about to add that the Harry Potter car was a ... never mind, a couple double-dozen comments already mentioned it. XD seriously, this was close to the buried truck you did a couple years ago, a little less corroded, but still a challenge. :) maybe someone recommended it already, but Revell and Tamiya offer modeler's putty, the only difference is that Revell's stuff is an off-white and Tamiya's is medium grey (cool grey IV, as Faber-Castell would put it). odd thing with the paint. maybe it is like with engine oils; supposedly mixable, but with modern stuff, additives can clash and cause damages. maybe the paint makers use different basics, who knows. but it ended up being a nice green. :) also, interesting "windshield brace". I'd assume they meant hinting at the windshield sealing frame. but that edge there? no idea. as if they wanted to experiment on fastening a window insert, and discarded it without re-retooling the mould again. it has happened before, like then Majorette's VW 1302 lost it's bonnet but the interior still had the boot with a suitcase moulded in. anyway. so you went metaldetecting... what was that beep, then? probably a blop of rusted metal, I guess. and on your way back you had to discover that Kevin can perform a Kevin without even being there... XD

The first car I learned how to drive in, drive a stick in, hand crank and work on was a 1959 Austin A55 MkII my dad owned. He actually had three of them at one time- two of the cars were basket case parts cars that were stripped and scrapped and the other was an old gasser we converted back to stock. Mentioning grants pass, Oregon we lived in portland at that time, a three hour drive north. Dad sold that car and the parts in the mid 90s and I haven't seen it since. I'd love to see it again. Nice restoration on the car!

There is a product in North America, (not sure if it is available in Australia, ) for rust removal. It is non-toxic, non-corrosive, and reusable. It has been used by a number of KZfaqrs, though I started using it before seeing it on YT. I'm not one to advertise for a product, but this stuff does work. It's called Evaporust. Comes in a 4L jug. It requires full immersion of the item (i.e. it's not a brush on. ) I personally have used it many times and am always amazed at how well it removes rust. Good for any ferrous metals with corrosion (rust. ) Love the restorations! Miss seeing Julie in the videos. Hi to her!

Considering how long the little one was "buried" somewhere, the resto has become excellent. 🤩👍🏼 With the amount of damage, it's almost impossible to get it back to a new condition. But you can clearly see how much TLC 🛠️🎨🖌️ you've invested in transforming the Austin from a piece of scrap metal back into a gem for the showcase 😉 Well done Marty, clearly both thumbs up for this 👍🏼👍🏼 Thanks a lot for sharing 🙏🏼 A bonza weekend to you, Julie and all the team behind the scene and stay safe and sound. It's very tricky to get the proper color from photos on the internet. Even cars that have exactly the same color can look different shades of that color on different photos. And then there's your own monitor, which I expect is not calibrated, so it doesn't show the right colors anyway 😁 I expect there to be books on Matchbox paint colors so you can get to the proper color through that. The car does look very good with the color you painted it, though 👍

When I were a lad, early 50's, these toys were 1 shilling and 6 pence. Throwaway things of little value even to a small child. Bashed around with little or no thought of their future as collectable items. We can be thankful that these little things, especially the very early models, find their way to Marty, who brings them back to how they were when they left the factory. As the saying goes, they don't make 'em like they used to, and that's a shame....
