I'm really excited to hear how it pans out for you! The XL looks like a great fit on you. I took it on my thru-hike this summer and it basically replaced my puffy AND my rain jacket 95% of the time. I was so increasingly impressed with it day over day that it ended up becoming my favourite piece of gear on trail especially towards the end of season when it started getting chilly. But I agree with Devon below, an extra inch or two in the zip would help with getting on and off, but like others have mentioned I started getting used to it pretty quick. Great Review Rob! Keep Moving Forward

Your video was very helpful. I was planning to order one and watching this made me look at sizing more carefully. I'd usually order an L also but looking at their measurements made it clear I needed an XL. Got it today and it fits great. Looking forward to trying it out on a thru hike of the foothills trail next week. I'm also bringing my app gear hoodie, just in case. Seems like the ventus will be great but want that insurance for the first use!

I just got one on sale and also struggled with figuring out which size to get. I'm a medium with most everything (5'9 and 155-158 lbs) and OV recommended a large after I used their sizing guidelines. I'm glad I got the medium though since as something over a baselayer, it fits me just fine. The large would have been too long and a little baggy. I'm planning on using it for running or hiking during the cold months. I think it will work out well considering its features. I wish there were hand pockets so that I can put my gloves somewhere after they warm up during a run. But I can also live with just carrying them in my hands.

I'm 5'7" 200lbs. I ordered it on kickstarter (I'm assuming you did also). If you look at the sizing chart and know your chest and shoulder measurements you'll get the right size. @@robpelton My puffy that I just ordered-I’m liking it! I think it’s comparable to the Nano Puff, except maybe $50-70 cheaper. This OV puffy has both thumb holes and pit zippers which make interesting options I think. I’m about 5’9 and pushing 190, blame the pandemic, and I think a Large feels good. Not as roomy as a Nano, but still didn’t feel constrained.

Thanks for the excellent review! I have one in my cart at OV to use up a store credit, and still trying to find the perfect mid-layer hoodie. Thanks for the review, Rob. I’ve looked at some OV stuff, but their clothes seem to all have athletic cut sizes. For the price, that has kept me from trying them. If you are interested in Melanzana, but can’t get one, Lightheart Gear makes a very similar product that is available to order. LHG version has thumbholes, and the drawstring is under the chin, but otherwise looks about the same. It’s also a cottage company made in USA.

I had to return my Ventus's, yes plural, because they were too small for my too big frame.

You mentioned that its made in the USA. Are you sure about that? I know most all clothing is made overseas these days. For some of this more specialized clothing that has cottage vendors here making it in the USA and at that price point. I'm willing to pay the cost for that made in USA tag when I can.

I just checked and you are correct. Designed and marketed here. Made in Vietnam. I updated the description. Thanks for watching!

Slightly off topic - I always found it odd that established companies need kickstarters to fund a product they want to put out.
@robpelton

That is odd. I do know, OV has been coming on pretty strong as of late. This is probably due to crowd funding.

It’s actually a really smart way to go. They get instant feedback on which sizes and colors will be most popular, they don’t have to borrow money from a bank, and they can place a much larger starting order on materials to keep costs down. Plus they generate buzz and a sense of urgency from customers.

@@madt0wn1 you shouldn’t need feedback on sizes, but if you did, you can review what sizes sold more on other products. Same with colors. Instant feedback is already available, through feedback and customer service. They don’t have the cash flow for products they want to put out. They are using your cash for that. Seems sketchy. I won’t support this model.

You get a thumbs up cause we bro's but I do not condone the purchase of anything from that company whose name shall not be spoken! Also the Ale8, nice!! Makes me thirsty!!!
@robpelton

I’ve found the Ale8 does well in a Moscow Mule! I did make a correction though. The Ventus is made in Vietnam. It is overpriced, but I’m tired of returning everything…ugh.

Dude, you're a bit overweight. I am fit. Most hikers/active people are. Its made to fit us, get like us. You want that type of layer to be form fitting.
@robpelton
@robpelton 2 жыл бұрын
I could lose a few pounds. The issue is with the sizing compared to nearly everything else on the market. Form fitting is fine. However, this is sized incorrectly according to every single piece of clothing in the US. Thanks for watching!

@@robpelton a lot the stuff is the "athletic fit" I've come to believe that means "ectomorph" Basically no belly and not bulldog shoulders. I know some people just order a couple sizes up. And being bigger doesn't mean you're less fit, just a different body type. I know some guys who are a little bigger that can hike miles around other body types.
