Tommy! I am 75 years old and have probably been using drills longer than you've been alive; however, you taught me something today! The proper way to secure a drill in the new drill motors was probably in the owners manual - but. I'm so smart, I didn't read it! I had no idea that actuallt torqueing it in was better than the "quick grab and trigger" method. Much obliged, young fellow. Excellent presentation. 🤠

DeWalt's decision to put torque, drill and hammer all on a single collar is the reason I buy Makita. I regularly go from drilling to screwdriving. I do not want to be twisting that collar between every operation. Makita's approach of a torque collar and a separate drill/drive/hammer lever is a far superior solution.

For many years I drilled holes into concrete using a regular drill. Never needed a lot of holes in concrete, but always didn't look forward to that task. I knew about hammer drills but come on, how much faster could they really be? Well I had a fair amount of concrete to drill and it was kicking my butt so I broke down and bought a hammer drill. Holy crap, couple minutes vs 30-60 minutes.

Pre-drilling means to drill a hole before you put the screw. You dont always do that, often you just screw it in and let it make its own hole. Drilling is when you need a hole for other things than a screw. Pre-drilling is a useful word, if i were to instruct someone i just say "remember pre-drilling here" instead of "remember to drill holes first before you put screws here". Its called pre-drilling because it is followed by screwing, a very useful word that simplifies our language. In mechanical production we use pre-drilling too, and a lot, thats were the word came from, we always drill a smaller hole before using a large diameter drillbit, or else the large drillbit will wobble so much that the hole get the wrong diameter and often the drillbit will break from sideways forces. Pre-drilling is also used when working on the inner dia in a lathe. Youre just clueless and got no real life experience, its as simple as that.

I really appreciate properly used words and phrases. I can't help it. I was just born that way. For example, it hurts my soul when people say "I could care less" instead of "I couldn't care less". So, I smiled and nodded in agreement during the segment on pre-drilling :)

As a contractor, carpenter, framer and deck builder and Welder I only needs 2 of the 3! The impact driver and the hammer drill that's it. The one that I use for Driving Fasteners deck screws, structural lag screws and some short lag bolts while the other I use for drilling holes, pilot holes, and masonry. And in my experience I found that the drill driver alone is useless because it doesn't have a hammer function compare to the hammer drill. In the hammer drill you can also drive fasteners in there because it also have a clutch. More power and more torque than the drill driver. So Everytime I buy tools I always purchase them in a bundle kit package Impact Driver and Hammer Drill with batteries, charger and a tool bag. There's a lot of options out there a lot of selections and varieties. Either DeWalt, Makita, Bosch, Ryobi, Craftsman, Hilti, Ridgid, Flex, Hitachi/Metabo HPT and some cheap stuff like Harbor Freight Hercules and Bauer they always comes in a kit. In my opinion the best pair is the Impact Driver and the hammer drill. And in my jobsite I use 2 tool for driving Fasteners especially when pre drilling is required. Impact Driver is meant for driving Fasteners and hammer drill is mean for drilling holes. No I don't use paddle bit on any of my impact driver because that's stupid and dumb. If I want to use paddle bits I always put that thing on my hammer drill either on my DeWalt cordless or Bosch corded hammer drill.

This is one of my all time favourite KZfaq videos, purely for the section on defining the meaning of "pre". I have this argument constantly, and can now send a link to this for any future conversations. In fact, just by typing this comment I'm already pre-drilling (and pre-ordering, pre-planning, pre-purchasing and most other pre-words)!

I started out with an entry level 18v drill + driver 2 piece kit, and later on added a brushless 18v hammer drill (same brand, better model). Having 3 items means less changing of bits when doing drilling, countersinking, and driving. Really saves time and faffing about. And if you stay in one ecosystem, the batteries are interchangeable too.

One "trick" I've discovered recently is when tightening the chuck is to do it as you normally would, but then you need to twist the chuck backwards gently and it'll click to lock your chuck. All these years I've been just wrenching it as hard as I could without locking it! Doesn't seem to be a very well know thing........

Excellent video, very informative. I've noticed on the tables listing drill size for a pilot hole for a given screw size, the pilot holes are larger than the screw shank, but, if I use a drill to match the screw shank, it provides a much tighter fit in wood, and often results in a damaged screw in metal.

I don't know why they recommend a drill bit so close to the size of the screw. I've found the same thing as you....a smaller hole works much better.

Late to the party... This is the most informative video on drills I have seen. I've learned some of these tips over the years by making mistakes. I wish I had a concise video explaining my power drill and drilling concrete back then. I'm glad I get to learn more today.

Nice Video! Very clear and informative. The drivers I use the most in life are my Makita impact wrench with 1/2 to 1/4 adapter because it has tons of power but when I don't need allot of power I use my Milwaukee Surge impact driver because it's a quiet tool, great if you are working in someone's home. I don't use a drill/diver as often but when I do use a drill/driver it is my Milwaukee M12. Thank you for your video.

This is very good stuff. Thanks for such great tutorial. Just wished you ended it with "how to keep your drill bits sharp" but I guess that could be a different topic. 👍

Ok, I bought a dewalt brushless drill/driver so I could DIY a bookshelf and desk. Now I have to use it🤔so switch to SS to 1 and MSC to around 7,8 or 9 and go for it (ulp). Bit (pun!) of advice to newbies...if you plan to use your new drill tomorrow - charge the battery today 😆Thanks for the tutorial!

Wow wow wow, incredible video for us noobs. Thank you for going through the basics, I have the same drills as you but never knew about the various modes of operation as it's not really well distributed. Simple, concise and eloquently explained. Subbed as an invaluable DIY resource!! Edit: You keep on delivering, just found your vid on bevel guage, thank you so much! Your method of knowledge transfer, effective editing and straight-to-the-point (no rambling) is so rare to see here on YT.

I watched your video start to finish because of the challenge that you presented. I have been using tools since before this century began. I did not learn anything. I must say that I use the trigger to tighten my bits. But, I always finish tightening them by hand, In that, I cetainly agree with you. Had I seen this in the 20th century, I would have learned what I know now. I would respectfully ask that you edit the challenge out of this. This is a great video for someone just getting into tools. I learned about finishing holes from the other side after I messed up a door using a jig.
