We only go as far as our thoracic spine takes us. Higher level, dynamic activities require our spine to flex, rotate, extend, and side-bend in many different directions. Most this will come from our thoracic spine due to the unique anatomy of the rib cage. Learn how to keep yourself flexible and "in the game".

Hi the second exercise rotation of the spine is it safe for people with osteoporosis in the spine to do ? As twisting and rotations are not safe to do for people with osteopolises

Your knees may be tightening due to many factors, it depends on how the rest of your spine, ribcage, shoulders, hips, and pelvis are functioning. Knee issues usually are a symptom of other parts of the body not functioning properly. Without seeing you in person, I would recommend stretching the entire body, which includes the legs, hips, knees, ankles. Ideally, you want to do a whole body stretch daily to keep things mobile, but you may also have muscle weakness in and around the knees, a blend of stretching and strengthening is best for long-term change in the health of your body. You can't really isolate the knees and "stretch them", they are a joint, so you're going to stretch the muscles that cross the knee joint, like the hamstrings, quads, calves, and also the hip muscles (too many to list), but hopefully that will help you get started...:)

Wow i never knew this about the ribcage. So this raises a question: I have good flexibility, no problem. But I have a small flat chest / ribcage and would like to expand it. I don't want big pectoral muscles, just a bigger rib box. Is there a way to enlarge the ribcage (like say dumbbell pullovers, stretches, etc) , or is even possible after age 50 ?

Hello Tim, yes you can build up your pectoralis but it will be harder after 50. Testosterone levels start to fall naturally as we age so building "big" muscles are challenging. But that being said, you can definitely increase your strength and girth of your chest. Are you currently lifting weights?

@@FrontRowwithEd Yes I currently lift weights but I don't want to build big boob like pectoral muscles. I want to make my ribcage bigger. Is that possible? and are there any exercises to make the actual rib cage bigger by taking advantage of the cartilage nature of the ribs?

Did you say ribs are made of cartilage? Ribs are made of bone. The intercostal spacers are cartilage. When you eat barbecue ribs, you consume meat (muscle) and you’ll be left with a pile of bones.

He is just saying that what we generally think of as our ribcage has a lot more cartilage than we might realize. He's just simplifying it and drawing attention to the fact that our ribcage is where mobility comes from and that it's not all hard bone. I am sure that he is cognizant of the difference between rib bone and cartilage though. xD
