I am on a mission to over-winter my Sunpatiens! I purchased these plants from #QVC and #PhillipWatson of Phillip Watson Designs, and they are Absolutely Beautiful! Although I have more ordered for the Spring of 2024, I am going to do my best to over winter some from the ones I bought this year. Can it be done and will it work? Watch and see my suggestions and lets see!

(Montana) I have successfully overwintered Sunpatiens in my home/hobby greenhouse in Zone 4. But there is a catch that I discovered only after failing for several years in a row. It's labor intensive to keep them monitored and requires chemical warfare to keep them alive and growing. If you're not willing to use fungicide and miticide, don't even try it. (Cuttings in water might still work) First of all, Sunpatiens seem to be quite prone to stem rots, but that is easily fixed with fungicide and a fan. Here's the biggie with these gorgeous plants though: mites! Not the regular two-spotted spider mite that affects almost every other plant and are fairly easy to control. New Guineas catch the Broadmites, which are way teenier than regular mites. (You are hard pressed to see them even with a jewelers eye-glass) And they require a special pesticide. (I use Akari). As if that isn't a big enough pain in tuchus, NGs are also prone to aphids and thrips so applications of regular insecticide is usually required too. Good Luck!

Wow Thank you so much for the information! I had no idea since this is my first year trying this. I will be sure to follow all your advice and hope I can keep these plants going good enough until the spring. Praying I have a good success with them. If not, luckily I have the auto ship order reserved! Thank you again. I know others will be grateful for your help as well. God Bless ❤️

@@CHwT You're welcome. I should have added, that all in all, even with the high failure rate, it's still a challenge I take on every year. Because.... plants that were overwintered and growing good and strong by the end of March in the greenhouse, go outside nice and big in May. They fill out fast in the spring sunshine and OMG!! They make enormous mounds of color in your flower beds while most other annuals are still wee-little-things. Plus... I'm cheap. I don't like to buy every year when I can just propagate my own. : )
