We just purchased 4 Little Hotties about 3 weeks ago in August 2023. We live in Michigan about 30 miles frome Detroit. We purchased from a large nursery in Macomb Township. We had to return one due to them turning brown in the first week of them being purchased. The nursery replaced it with a new one. So far so good. We are new to hydrangeas, so we are hoping these Little Hotties do well and survive😊

It's a great little performer and you should be able to enjoy them for many years. But just know that there are many different selections of panicle hydrangeas with different characteristics and not all of them hold their color through the whole of the summer and fall season (especially when we get excessively hot and humid weather). Also, it sometimes take a year or two for the plants to settle in and become accustomed to their new home. We know that David says he's often seen situations where it takes two complete seasons (or more) for these plants to fully root out into the surrounding soil and become completely established. So, it is not unusual to see things like premature discoloration or sometimes thin, flimsy and floppy growth in the first year or so. This usually rectifies itself in time and once they are established grow away to display all their wonderful qualities. In the meantime, make sure to water them frequently and well (especially during any hot, intense summer weather. Have you subscribed to our channel? David, thank you for a great informative video. This year was my very first with limelight and I had to tie them up with string because the blooms were so huge! I will follow your advice about pruning, as the stems were way too long and thin to support the blooms. I really enjoy your videos and find them very entertaining and educational. Thanks again!

Thanks, good to hear you have invested in this excellent selection. Over the years, we have noticed recently planted specimens will sometimes be a bit "droopy" for the first year or so. Usually as they mature, and get settled in, they stiffen up and produce those lovely big heads on strong sturdy stems.

David,..couple of questions which I hope you’ll answer for me, please. 1) Are there any major character attributes that specifically differentiate Little Hottie from Bobo and Fire Light Timbit as I believe all 3 of these are viewed as being ‘dwarf’ hydrangeas, and 2) Is ‘cycle pruning’ the same process you mentioned in another of your videos wherein, with panicles, you cut off +/- 1/3rd of the current season’s new growth (before buds set) in order to have your hydrangeas bloom later in the season, and 3) does ‘cycle pruning’ have any impact on the number, or size, of flowers produced using this procedure?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
All three of these selections are small, compact growers but they have (of course) their own individual genetic differences.... Fire Light Tidbit is like Bobo an early bloomer, and it usually has nice color in cool weather. Bobo's flowers are like I mentioned in the video "lacy" with an elegant very becoming look. Whereas Little Hottie is very free flowering - even as young plants they are loaded with lots of comparatively large flowers. Depends upon available space and the size of everyone's garden, but if you have the room, all three are worthy of coveted places. Cycle pruning is the same principle, but different in that we do it several times and different stages to keep the crops rolling in with color. It demonstrates how versatile and accommodating plants can be, and how it is possible to have modern day Panicle Hydrangeas staged to provide a concert of color from the early part of the summer right through to the frosts of late Autumn. Finally, as you've probably noticed in our videos, a hallmark of our production is to have bushy, well-shaped plants that have multiple stems. This type of pruning is expensive in terms of labor requirement (which is why many nurseries don't do it), but we believe its important to "manicure" our plants frequently, so that when they go to the garden centers they are premium sized, and raring to grow! Pruning like this delays the flowering time, makes the plants extra bushy and usually produces more flowers eventually.

We understand. At least by asking your local plant and garden centers about particular plants, you are helping to alert them to the merits of that variety. Sometimes, places overlook or are not (yet) aware of upcoming, cutting edge selections, so by mentioning your interest, you are encouraging them to consider them, and of course helping them to (perhaps) find and stock other really good plants too.

We use a variety of different types of fertilizer but for feeding the panicle hydrangeas in our trial and test garden we use a well-balanced slow release fertilizer, and if you care to tune into this video at the 16.00 mark you will see David apply it after he pruned them in early spring: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJyDh6ir2bPFcYU.htmlsi=4behHikzuGh2EXy9 To preserve our independence (and not be beholding to any particular corporations) we make a point of not mentioning individual brands, but if you talk to your local garden center experts they will be able to guide you will the types that are right your your neighborhood. Have you subscribed to our channel? @OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and submitting your question. In general, its only a matter of time until good new plants get picked up by the trade in other parts of the world. So keep your eyes peeled because sooner or later (if they perform well in your conditions) they are likely to be featuring in your garden centers and nurseries. We are in a fortunate position to be getting so many exciting new selections from the world's best breeders to trial. Most of them (of course) do not prove better or substantially different to all the existing selections, but amongst them, there's usually a few outstanding ones that make it into our production and distribution system. So stay tuned, make a note of any that you like, and even consider mentioning them to your favorite plant centers, so that when they do make it through the rigorous phytosanitary, importation processes and local trials, you'll be "ahead of the game"!

@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your inquiry. Hydrangea quericfolia "Harmony' is a nice, double flowered selection but alas the big, heavy heads hang and droop down, to often touch the ground (especially on young plants), and get damaged, so people decline from buying them in garden centers, and therefore few places will stock them! I know the single flowered form - Jetstream is not what you are asking about, but fyi, this selection has habitually performed well in our trials, regularly puts on a lovely show (even as a young plant) so it might be worth considering. @OverdevestNurseries

When they are grown in pots (like these ones) you can plant them anytime the ground is not frozen (i.e March through to early December). That said, our FAVORITE TIME is in Autumn. The ground is warm after the summer, the fall rains make it moist and easier to dig, the weather is nice for outdoor projects, and the roots are growing actively, so the plant's root systems become beautifully established and the plants are all set for quick, sustained growth the following spring. Spring and summer planting is good too, but Fall planting definitely has the edge, and when you visit the garden centers, they won't be as busy as the hectic spring periods, so the staff will have more time to advise and guide you. Here's a link that will help you find all the garden centers in your area that carry our plants: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/

With “cycle pruning” how is the customer to know what the true bloom time for the Hydrangea will be in our garden then? If we prune at the usual time in early Spring, when would this particular variety bloom in the NE? Cycle pruning helps the seller, but is misleading for the buyer☹️
@aquafishcspeia2921

In my experience the difference in bloom time is no more than 2 weeks. When growers ship out the plants they do typically take your growing zone into consideration.
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
With most plants the flowering time is shown on the tags, websites and I try to mention it too in our videos too (although I confess, sometimes I forget to include this)! And of course, the experts at your local garden center will try to keep you right too. To answer your question directly about this variety, it flowers pretty much around the same time as most of the other panicle hydrangeas i.e. Mid to late summer. In milder, earlier areas, it will flower earlier that this, but in New England it will be sparkling and gleaming with color in mid-summer.

Make sure to plant it in a larger (at least 15" in diameter) container. Put gravel or other rocky material in the base to aid drainage (good drainage is important), use a good planting compost (types and advice is available at our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ ) and make sure to water well until your plant gets established. Then stay tuned because David has an upcoming video featuring a variety that we have grown in a container and that will give you extra tips. Have you subscribed to our channel?
