My dude I got a civic from a scrap yard that didn't run and it had 314k miles. I was told the trans was bad. Guess what? Spark plugs were bad due to a valve seal leak. The idiot overfilled the oil on top of that and shorted the plugs and got oil EVERYWHERE. I also fixed a whole list of things on it. When I was done and 50 hours of work later, I had myself a damn good car. Only spend 350$ on the car and 200$ on the parts. 15k miles later it runs like brand new.

If you get a new radiator make sure you get a new radiator cap as well, older gaskets tend to be paper thin and this will cause tolerance issues when you put it on and coolant will start spraying into your overflow Reservoir. Found that out the hard way....

To check your thermostat boil some water to 200 degrees as the big spring heats up it will pull the top part open to allow flow then put under the faucet with cold water and see it close up. Check you heater control valve. solenoid and vacuum hoses attached to it.

Good video but must say that more attention to detail should be put to use. The coolant your adding to that model and year vehicle is wrong. That coolant is for older domestic vehicles. After 1990 the aluminum used to cast motors is of lower quality having other metals which in are sensitive to corrosion. Use modern antifreeze designed for modern vehicles. Oh one other more caution on installing gasket on thermostat the gasket has a slight rounded area that fits around the air relief pin on thermostat which should always have free play to perform it's function.. cheers people happy wrenching....😎😎😎

Great video, thx 4 your help. :0) I do need to clarify a couple things, however-- so when I am swapping out thermostat, is it best to have the cap for coolant still on or should it be removed? Then also, do I NEED to undo or remove any hose(s) in order to complete thermostat replacement?! I am hoping you'll say just to work around them somehow, because I cannot figure out how to get the hose clamps off or loosened at all. Then also there is something resembling a zip tie, one that's been fastened & cut... but it's no ordinary zip tie as it has an extra thingy coming off of it -- I am guessing it's purpose is to clamp some plug wiring or something into place and it's in the way but I cannot figure out how to loosen it, slide it or pop it off!!! Sorry for all of the questions, but I am a 32-year-old female that is just trying to learn & figure it out as she goes! Thanks 4 your help.

Staci McVay It’s always safer to remove the radiator cap when working on the cooling system, as far as the hoses go, I recommend removing them and replacing, they only cost 8 to ten dollars a piece. To remove them, loosen the hose clamp with a flat screwdriver, then insert the screwdriver under the hose and hose clamp to lose it up for removal. As far as the weird zip tie, without seeing a pic I assume it’s function is to secure some type of wiring harness, you can usually pop those out of the bracket with a flat screwdriver or work around it. Good luck!

Water pump: Well I *have* seen one that went bad. Also seen a brand new aftermarket pump that wouldn't even turn. And ANOTHER one that had interference with the block once it was bolted up. Moral of the story: if you suspect a water pump, buy it in advance and CHECK the part! Also another thing old 'D' engine Hondas are vulnerable to is corrosion of the crossover pipe (underneath the intake manifold). Mine corroded all the way through! That was the source of the leak.

I had my 2004 Honda Civic for about a month now and yesterday it suddenly overheated, the brakes got tight and all. Took about 30 minutes before I could start it again but even then it got overheated in a matter of minutes. Have been failing to diagnose the problem. Can’t find any leaks, but the hoses look corroded. I replaced the thermostat, not sure if that was the problem I’ve yet to give it a test run for fear it’ll break down again. Also, I do not use coolant or anti-freeze, just water. And I’m worried it may have gotten to the engine.

01 honda accord lx 2 weeks ago I did the same thing replaced my thermastat my overheating stopped, then the other day I noticed a dead grass spot lol in my mom's yard were I would park so from how it looks its dripping on the driver's side on the backside of pulleys, my stepfather told me the water pump and timing belts were replaced at 100,000 miles and im at 140,000 miles so what's frustrating is when I drive for 10 mins or so my temp gauge slowly starts going up. I saw there was low coolent in overflow tank so filled to the line but not over flow and did the same to my radiator. When filling my radiator I can hear leaking on the ground with a decent drip. Been told I don't have a blown head gasket cus no smoke, also good spark, no fluid in were my spark plugs go,. So yea im stumped. Lol

Wicked Witch check the condition of the coolant in the radiator, if it’s leaking out through the head you may have slime or gunk around the radiator cap, or in the water itself. See if you can get a compression test, check for a bad head gasket. You must be loosing coolant somewhere.

My 1999 civic overheats in the summertime after the car has been warmed up, and then sits stationary at idle with the A/C on. After that initial warm up, I can witness the radiator fan start to spin and then continue spinning. So that tells me that the cooling fan circuit (relay & fan switch) is working. I don't yet know the condition of the thermostat. But even with the fan running, the temperature steadily creeps up to hot. But, If I raise the engine speed to 2200 or greater, the temp quickly goes back down to normal. So given all that, I'm thinking that because the over-temp problem can be overcome when the engine/water pump runs faster, it would seem logical to me that either the pump is defective, or that there is an obstruction to the flow of coolant... or both. Am I on the right track?
@MattPritchard

Yes you are, before you start taking things apart however; make certain that the cooling system is full. If there’s a leak somewhere, there won’t be enough coolant to cool the engine at idle.

My 05 honda civic's radiator blew in the middle of a long trip. Coolant had splattered all over the passenger side of the car from the top of the radiator blowing. I added stop leak to the car to try to hold the coolant in just long enough so I could get it back home. Since I have replaced the radiator but my car has a reoccurring overheating issue. Specifically when it sits in idol with the A/C running, when going up big hills, when driving often in a hot day (I live in Phoenix AZ). Do you think the stop leak is clogging my coolant from circulating properly?
@MattPritchard
@MattPritchard 6 жыл бұрын
If all your components seem to be working properly, you may consider a head gasket issue. Look for oil dropplets at the radiator cap, or a tannish filmy color on the dipstick. Sometimes after setting a while water dropplets will occur at the end of the dipstick. I really dont think Stopleak will plug or restrict water circulation.

ESTC I knew it!!! I’m not a certified mechanic but I been through enough to how to fix my car.... I had the same problems with my 2000 civic lx thank God I have a family member who owns a shop so I’m able do my own thing and ask for help whatever I get stuck. I did everything I was supposed to do in a overheating case and and after taking all the steps I was left with the most dreaded one... new head gasket. Here’s the catch though, the same issues reoccurred months later and since I knew the car and what kind of work I’ve put in it, a quick look/test shows it was the head gasket again. My mechanic relative? He got lazy and didn’t inspect the cylinders head for wraps and that was my main issue. So on the second around replacing it we had to resurface it , in fact my car is in the shop as we speak, I’m waiting for Monday so we can go resurface it and put it back together. I can only imagine how much money a crooked mechanic would make off an average person that doesn’t know much about cars just to get to the bottom of this issue.

I’m assuming it’s over heating, drive the car around to operating temp, bring it home, park it somewhere where you can see water dripping on the ground. Wait patiently and watch for any leaks. If you don’t see any, check that your electric fans are turning on. If those check out ok, look at the radiator cap for oil in the water, you may have a blown head gasket, these cars are notorious for that.
