If you turn the can upside down when you drill the vent hole, plastic fragments will not fall down into your container. if you grab the side of the plastic protective insert with needle-nose pilers and twist 180, this will cause the circumference of the insert to shrink, you have a solid grip on it, and then it pulls out easily.

This guy has a real point on where to locate that vent at so no hands or clothes block the thing when pouring. I did the same thing just now to one of my new cans. That is why I am watching this my son bought his first lawn mower this year so I gave him a big 4gal can and my smaller 1.5 gal can. I keep one semi large can myself for reserve spare gas and two 5gal cans for my tractors. My Craftsman and Yard Man are gas hogs. I suggest folks keep a stock pile of fuel this year due to the work situation being what it is right now. Keep 3-4 times what you need on hand at all times. A few cans of store bought gas like True Fuel and 2cyl on hand is also not a bad idea the stuff really doesn't go bad for a really long time.

Every single "safety" spout I have used in the past couple of decades has caused me to spill more gas when refilling equipment than I used to with the basic "not-safe" spouts from years ago. And the fact the EPA (or whoever decides on design) keeps changing the approved safety design suggests they know the last several offerings sucked and were a PITA.

I drilled and tapped a ¼"-20 hole in my 5 gallon plastic can, and have a ¼"-20x ½" long bolt that I screwed a nut down tight to the head, then put a little O ring on the bolt. That works, but a ¼" hole is a tiny vent when trying to empty a 5 gallon can into a tractor, and it does restrict the flow. I think a ⅜" would be much better, but haven't done that yet. Glad you didn't spill fuel on your workbench! That looked a bit risky, especially with all that electrical equipment right there. When you start pulling on up that plastic thing inside the can it helps to have the die grinder around and put a slot or two in it. Make's it come out easier for ya.. I've done enough of em 4 friends and neighbors now I sorta have things down to a few seconds process. I use one of them same needle nose vice grips myself lock it on the thing and that is when and where I start slicing on it. on the smaller cans it even helps that when ya get it up some drill a hole in it like an 1/8th inch bit and poke a screw driver thru it so it won't slither away on ya. I was getting what I called the best plastic cans were called a HUL CAN. I cannot find them anymore not even on the net. I was getting mine at the ACE Hardware store quite a distance from here. The plastic is much thicker than other cans I have seen and they take quite a bit of abuse especially at winter deer camp we have this gargantuan generator that runs almost everything else we need in the 5 5th wheel campers we all have on my patch. I only have a 50amp service for mainly my use so I found my big giant generator coming into the local scrap yard. The guy that had it told me it used to work good at one time maybe it could be fixed he told me. And I fixed it but when everyone is showering and cooking all at once its a gas pig. It goes thru $25 $30 bucks worth of gas over night and then again next day too. So I am a local authority on big ole gas cans too..

Waste of money. A tire valve stem is cheaper. And for the spout just cut off all of the epa junk leaving about an 1" and a 1/2 of spout. Then buy a foot of clear tubing from Lowes and a hose clamp. I use a cap plug in the end of the hose. The cheap clear plastic flex hose that didn't fit well will crack in a year or two. After they crack I cut them at the base of the accordion part and use the same clear hose, hose clamp, and stopper. Also put the vent higher up on the back of the handle. The bigger cans actually have a flat non textured pad for the vent. The push in yellow plastic ones do work well but I still use tire valve stems. I like the all metal ones
