I did a renovation in one section by using a tow-type thatch rake with cinder-blocks for weight in August. I basically raked the crap out of the weed patch and scalped it into a fine mulch. Threw down heavy seed over the worst areas and a light overseeding on the areas with established grass. The next spring the grass was filling in better than expected. Every fall, I just scatter a little seed across the lawn to blend all the different cultivars with Tall Fescue and its really looking great after putting in some work.. I buy seed from a big box store, (1) Scotts Heat Blue mix did little in my experience (2) Lowes Green brand (Rebel?) worked well for me and its a dark green cultivar, the product has been replaced by another manufacturer. I had good results from Pennington seed products, the price of grass seed has really gone up in recent years.

It's in the 80s here in idaho for the next couple weeks so I'm getting ready to over seed by this weekend. I have most of the stuff for it. I have seed and fertilizer. Getting the grass down and going to dethatch. Going to put down some more compost I put down compost this spring and my yard loved it. Put down 20 bags of it and only 3 rocks and sticks in it. I only have a few spots along the sidewalk that needs help so hopefully next spring it will be great. Need to do backyard too.

Thanks for this info. I plan on overseeding my lawn. Should I fertilize my yard before or after overseeding, or should I skip the fall fertilizer because it may kill the new grass?
@TheLawnLover
@TheLawnLover 9 ай бұрын
I always wait to apply starter fertilizer until about a week after I overseed my lawn - with the thought being I don't want the current grass to soak up the fertilizer and take off choking off those new seedlings. Once the new seeds sprout, hit it with starter fertilizer. Depending on the timeframe of when you seed compared to when your last application is, another fall application should not hurt anything if you are a few weeks away from the starter fertilizer application and you didn't hammer if with a huge amount of starter fertilizer. So many people are afraid of straw. In my experience, it’s like anything else. Get a quality blanket, you’ll be fine. You should be using tenacity at seed down and 30 days later. I typically just use whatever I have on hand or pick up a cheap 12-12-12 to use for starter fertilizer. This season I mixed up some of the Turf Titan liquids I had left for starter fertilizer - Lawn Advancer, Lawn Commander, and Root Booster and it seems to have worked great. Mixing these gives me a 22-7-10 with all the beneficial microbes in the Root Booster. Thanks for watching!

Great Video for a beginner like me! Would you recomemd spraying triad down and wait the 3-4 week overseed mark. Or would it be safer to just spray tenacity down when overseeding in mid-late September?
@TheLawnLover

I would say it depends on how many weeds you are dealing with. If you are inundated with them, I would spray now and shoot for 4 weeks or so out to overseed. If there are just a few, wait and use the tenacity at seeding to help. Thanks for watching and good luck!

Is peat moss your favorite top dressing? Do you ever use a compost mix to overseed with?
@TheLawnLover
@TheLawnLover 10 ай бұрын
If you can a find a good quality (screened) compost mixture that works just as well. I typically use the peat moss because it is easy to get in bags and I don't have a huge area to cover. Most of the good compost is stuff you have to buy in bulk from a landscape supply in a larger quantity - I have not had luck in the past with bagged compost - it is full of stuff like sticks and rocks. Would you recommend using a Plant Growth Regulator, prior to the overseed? How much time between PGR application and seeding?
@TheLawnLover
@TheLawnLover 10 ай бұрын
I personally have never used a PGR prior to seeding, but I have seen others do so with success. Most liquid PGR's are foliar applications, so they will be absorbed by the existing grass and not the seed. Also, since the PGR is not an instantaneous response, if I were to do this I would apply it a week or two before overseeding. The benefit of the PGR is it will slow do your existing grass and really help drive root growth on that newly planted seed. Good luck in your fall overseeding, and thanks for watching!

If you just overseeded and the grass isn't fully established, I personally would use a blower to remove them or bag them up with your mower. Typically you could mulch them in with the mower if they aren't super thick, but if your new seedlings are fairly new, this could choke them out. Good luck and thanks for watching!

What is the best fertilizer and when to apply after over seeding?
@TheLawnLover
@TheLawnLover 10 ай бұрын
I typically apply something like a root growth stimulant at the time of seeding (I have been using root Booster from Turf titan) and once the grass germinates, I put down a starter fertilizer to give it a boost. If you put down the starter fertilizer at the time of seeding, your existing grass will take off and make it harder for the new seeds to germinate. Thanks for watching!

Here's my dilemma. I'm in Northern New England. I had planned to do my overseed project this coming long weekend. However, the weather looks dry and mid 80's for a long stretch starting on Thursday. I know that seed need to be kept wet to germinate. Crazy question....if I move forward and do it this weekend, could I spread the seed and refrain from watering it until the weather is more favorable and normal? I'm wondering if I can delay the germination process by not watering until the conditions become more favorable. Leave it dry while the temps are above average and no rain is expected. Basically, doing all of the work, but not "flipping the switch" until the weather cooperates. Or, should I delay the entire process a week or 2?
@TheLawnLover
@TheLawnLover 10 ай бұрын
You can still seed when it is hotter, you just have to ramp up the watering accordingly to keep the seed moist. If you are worried about the heat, I would probably hold off on doing anything until it cools down. The issue you will probably face is that seed getting that evening/morning dew moisture and thinking it's ready to try to grow. I would personally wait and do it when it cools down when you are ready to irrigate. Good luck with your seeding project and thanks for watching!

I am not sure what model of Honda that you have, but I would recommend searching the model of the mower online and looking for the user manual. The manual should outline what height of cut each of the settings are. I know with my Toro Timemaster, it is labeled by letters for the height and I have to use the manual to know which cut it is. Some mowers go by the inch (1", 2", 3", etc) and some break it down into 1/2" and 1/4" increments - it really just depends on the manufacturer. Thanks for watching!

Long story short, peat is harvested from bogs that have taken thousand and thousands of years to form, and aren’t being replenished any time soon. Coco coir is a waste byproduct from the palm industry, which makes its use currently infinitely more sustainable than peat. Additionally, peat becomes hydrophobic when it dries while coco coir is easily remoistened. Coir doesn’t cost that much more than peat, and I wouldn’t use peat again after learning about coir!

@@TheLawnLover I’m in 9b, Northern California, so price/availability may vary in the Midwest. Its widely replaced peat in all of the local soil mixes used for.. other plants Northern California is known for. I pay $20 for 1.5 cu ft at the local hydroponic/horticultural supply store. Avoid the brick stuff you see at big box stores if you can, try to find it loose in a bag.

Do you use a starter fertilizer when overseeding
@TheLawnLover
@TheLawnLover 10 ай бұрын
Great question! I personally do not apply any starter fertilizer to the area that I overseed until a week or so afterwards when the new seed starts to germinate. If you apply it at the time of seeding, it will drive growth on the existing grass and cause it to grow - making it tough for that newly germinated seed to compete. Thanks for watching!

Ew straw! Love peat moss, did about 1600 square feet of peat moss last fall by shaking it out of a laundry basket.

Haha, I bet you were covered in peat dust after that! I get some people messaging me pics after they seed wondering why they have so many weeds and I usually point back to the straw, not worth it imo! Thanks for watching!

@@TheLawnLover head to toe. And yes, also leaves behind a lot of straw, I don’t even like to see a leaf on the lawn after I seed. Good video!

Purchase or rent a rolling peat moss applicator, I have an eco 50 spreader. pick up double screened compost for app after dethatch and aeration and overseeing. Compost has gone thru several heat cycles that kill the weed seeds and helps break down clay and gumbo hardpan and holds moisture for new seed. Lots of gumbo in the south. Hard nasty slippery stuff.

I have one of the Landzie peat moss spreaders that I use on my small lawn and it works fantastic - also keeps the mess down.
