I’m in western Wisconsin. We had high temps and humidity during Labor Day Weekend so had to wait 1 week before doing what I would call a full renovation on my 11,000 square foot lawn. I had to build up 6” of topsoil in front of my house and slope it towards the street. 7 1/2 cubic yards was used. I dethatched and aerated the entire lawn before doing so. Once the topsoil was down, I spread 4 cubic yards of manure compost on the entire lawn, followed by Jonathan Green Black Beauty seed and their started fertilizer. Typical first freeze is late September up here, so here’s to praying that it won’t happen until October!

I purchased a high quality seed for my TF, it is a thinner blade than what I have, it also stated that it is for a hot area, my summer 95 to 115 low humidity with irrigation. All or most of that new growth has died over the last 2 years, it cannot handle our weather. So time to look for another brand or type.

great vid, can you do a levelling vid on your KBG? Ive made two attempts on mine and failed both times the grass never grew back through the play sand / moisture control miracle grow soil mixture. (ontario, canada). feel like its almost easier to just remove sod, level then replace with new sod. thanks!
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 10 ай бұрын
I do not have an area to use for that type process right now. One reason for the KBG not growing through your leveling material is that it was applied too thick. KBG is not like Bermuda, you cannot cover it completely and expect it to grow back through the leveling material. You will need to lightly topdress your KBG so that you are not covering the leaf blades and the KBG can continue to grow. If you do have areas that need more aggressive leveling and the grass blades get covered, you will need to reseed those areas. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the video, your tips are very appreciated! one question, do you reccommend spraying some pre emergent like Tenacity at seeding? or it will kill the new grass seedlings? I'm plannig to overseed with all kentucky blue. Thanks again!
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 10 ай бұрын
I recommend taking care of your weeds properly with the required post emergent herbicide before seeding and waiting the appropriate period before seeding. I do not apply pre-emergents after I have seeded. Tenacity is safe at the time of seeding but is not a very effective post emergent weed control alone.

I stay in Richmond, VA which isn't to far frome you. In the past I have focused on the 2nd week in September but this summer has been so hot that I don't want the heat to burn my seeds. Do you think with adequate watering I can still put my seeds down in the same time frame? Love your videos and lawn!!
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 10 ай бұрын
My advice is exactly what I said in the video. Watch your current weather, the soil temps, and your frost date. It can be done but if you are not able to keep the seed moist you are not going to have optimal results. When you seed may need to be flexible depending on your weather. Don't make it harder on yourself than it has to be if the conditions are not right for seeding.

Hey man great video and I'm a new subscriber. I'm on Long Island NY and I just finished overseeding this past week just in time for all the rain this weekend. My question is if my backyard is 2500 square feet and I have a scotts mini spreader and the Jonathan Greene seed says put my spreader on 6, how do I know if I'm achieving the 3-5lb per 1k square feet? What is the tried and true method for achieving the proper lbs per 1000 feet? Thanks in advance to you or anyone else that replies.
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 9 ай бұрын
There are a couple of steps to ensure this. One, see if the label states the overseeding rate per the specified setting for your spreader. Two, calibrate your spreader's seed rate per 1000 square feet. You should apply 3-5 lbs of seed within that area. If not, you will need to adjust your spreader's setting. Three, you can weigh the seed prior to application to ensure you're putting down the proper amount. Thanks for watching and good luck on your overseeding!

Do you recomment bagging the grass during thr first mow? Or should we mulching
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 10 ай бұрын
It depends on how much grass you are cutting off during that first mow. If you are only taking off a normal maintenance amount of grass, 1/3 or less of the leaf blade you can mulch as normal. If you are cutting off significantly more than that because of how much your lawn has grown, I would bag it then get back to more regular mowing.

Quick question: should I try to level off dips in my yard at this time? If so, how do you recommend I level it (materials, etc)? Thanks!
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 10 ай бұрын
Yes now is the time to do this so that you can seed the areas that need it after leveling. It depends on how deep your dips are which materials to use. For small dips and bumps use sand. For major dips/leveling use topsoil then switch to sand for fine tuning later. It may take a couple rounds of topdressing to get it where you want. Once you start using sand continue using sand. Don't switch back and forth with topsoil and sand.

@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 10 ай бұрын
I do not recommend it. St. Augustine is a warm season that does not need to be overseeded. It will go dormant in the winter depending on your location and climate. The left texture of St. Augustine and rye that you would overseed with is not going to match at all or even be close.

After you get at least 3 mows on it can use the usual weed control products. I am not a fan of using weed control in the fall on new grass unless I have a major weed problem that is not allowing the grass to grow and fill in. I recommend getting your pre-emergent down in the spring and use a weed control then to kill your weeds. You can use a granular pre-emergent but I recommend spraying your pre-emergent for better coverage and more effective application.

I live in zone 9 and want the darkest green I can get, currently lawn is mostly a tall fescue carried by Ewing but I sure seem to deal with a lot of disease pressure and it gets green, just not green green. Any suggestions on fescue cultivar? Thanks ahead of time!

I just overseeded yesterday. I put down a thin layer of peat moss over the seed to enhance moisture retention. Since you didn't show that step in your video, now I'm worried that I screwed up and that maybe it will prevent sunlight from hitting the seedlings. Could you comment on this, please? Thank you!
@ElevatedLawnscapes

Everything will be fine! You did not screw up. Grass seed does not require sunlight for germination. With proper soil temps and moisture the seed will germinate. I did not perform this step because peat moss is not a required step, especially in an overseeding situation. Peat moss can help with moisture retention but again, it is not required. Its just apart of the process, you will lose some good grass but most of the time its not much. You do not have to be really aggressive with the dethatching when your lawn is in good condition. Hi - a few questions if you don't mind: 1) No aeration in the case of overseeding a lawn in decent shape? I know you can rent them but I can't really fit one in my car so wondering how much I may be losing out not aerating. I have a dethatcher so have used that the last couple of autumn overseeding efforts. 2) Do you have to go to a third party to buy Mountain View seed? I was on their website, it doesn't look like I can buy directly from them. 3) Are you always overseeding even if your lawn is in good shape? This year we got a good amount of rain (in NJ) in July and August so for once my grass is in decent shape after the summer. I was wondering if I just gave it a good fertilizer feed to boost the growth and skip overseeding this year? Thanks for the videos you make.

There is not a winterizer fert, its marketing for your last fert application. You should always apply fert based on what your soil needs from your soil test. Yes I recommend dethatching. Cutting the grass lower and bagging is not the same as dethatching or power raking.
