Welcome to Dakar, Senegal's capital city! When I told friends and family I planned to visit Senegal they all told me I was crazy and that West Africa isn't safe. I decided to find out for myself...

Hoping that more and more people will watch this cuz as a Senegalese im tired of educating people that think Africa has barely nothing like no history no food nothing. You just proved them wrong in 24 minutes that's why i can't thank you enough. Hope you visit more countries in Africa and in the world so that we can learn more love you! :)))

Dakar is probably one of the most modern and beautiful cities I've seen in Africa. I've seen many youtubers travel to Nairobi, Kigali, Johannesburg, Addis Abeba, Dar Essalam, Accra, Lagos etc and they all look kinda dirty and chaotic. Dakar in fact reminds me of the city of Salvador in Brazil that i've visited. But Dakar feels safer whereas in Salvador you have to be on your toes.

thank you so much for the history that you’re showing and your video. It’s very important that people don’t get caught up in what they see on TV or hear in some of these countries. Thank you, Rob! Your comment really made me smile 😁 It certainly took a long time to put this video together! I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who doesn't barter hard. Travel guide books and blogs are always telling me to haggle haggle haggle but bartering too much, especially in circumstances like this, just feels wrong to me. Good quality clothes here in Europe are so much more expensive and I'm really happy with my scarf 😊

I have lived and worked in Dakar for the last three years. I spend a month at home, then a month in Dakar. I visited Goree in early 2021 when, due to covid, there were zero tourists. Yeah, I can remember the street sellers and with being the only two tourists there, you can imagine we attracted a bit of attention. It all adds to the adventure though 😀 Senegalese are great and many of them have tough lives, living on very little, but they still maintain a great attitude to life. Coming from Scotland, I do like the 9 months of zero rain as well 🌞

Wow, the baked goods look so amazing! In the U.S., the bread and pastries are not very good. Local markets are always adventures all on their own. The sights and sounds and don't forget the smells. I think you got a great deal on the local goods. I try not to haggle at very poor countries when the money is going directly to the local person who really needs the money. When April and I were in Guatemala, I did not really haggle unless someone was trying to take advantage of us. Then we usually bought the goods from a different vendor anyway. That is so sad about the 20,000,000 slaves. People are so cruel. The sand art is very cool. April would love to try the donuts. Your guide was so knowledgeable. It is so sad that there is so much trash on the beach that will wash into the ocean. How was the wrap?
@EllaMcKendrick
@EllaMcKendrick Жыл бұрын
Yes, I really love local markets - they're overwhelming (I get sensory overload quite easily) but mesmerising! That makes me feel better to hear that you also don't haggle. Guides online are always like "haggle! Never pay over the odds" but the one time I actually tried to barter hard (it was in Sri Lanka), I felt so awful about it. Unfortunately, there's like no infrastructure in place for waste disposal so people have limited options on what to do with it which is really sad. However, in this instance I believe it's the visitors who leave trash on the island which is really irritating. The wrap was delicious!

There were many advantages! First of all, my French is limited so I would have struggled to communicate with a lot of people. Secondly, he was helpful at advising on local customs. He also knew everyone which made me feel very safe. Finally, his recommendations were great! I didn't really notice any drawback. He was very flexible with the itinerary and when I got tired, he was happy to cut the day short. I hope this helps!

Amazing Travel Video! How chocked one can be to learn about the slave trade in the region you visited! One could never have imagined those non-humane living areas on the island! How small the living areas were, so stuffed with slaves, how bad the Africans were treated by the Europeans. Just you walking in there almost made me freeze! As a comment regarding people in Europe you know: They asked "Why?" that to me would indicate that they thought this was a dangerous place to visit with dangerous *African* people! It was in truth the *Europeans* that were dangerous - at least at one point in time! Great video cut together in a professional way with great use of voice-over and fast-cutting - adding to the experience! The Island was very interesting visually. The island had an interesting look which made me think of Alcatraz, the infamous American prison island. This was a video that had all sorts of locals moving along and talking about many things as you walked along at a high pace: I can imagine that you had a *rough* day there in Dakar and further on to the island! I have never seen such interesting street art before (In Dakar) and it was very much worth the effort to watch this video to see the locals making really great art using some sort of sand from the region! Using sand in different colors to get interesting results... Amazing Travel Video! If you feel like it check out the Travel section of my homesite "Continuation" where I have posted some "transformatory" articles written during prolonged travel in South East Asia primarily. www.andreasingo.se/travelstories.html Enjoy!

Thank you very much! I'm glad it left an impression on you - that's what I wanted it to achieve. I think it's important we remember events like this to try to avoid atrocities happening in future.
