Peter Hitchens and I don't see eye-to-eye on much. Or so you might think. We met up in Holland Park to discuss Jeremy Corbyn, whether or not the Conservative Party are socialists and whether we have anything to be optimistic about.
Subscribe to The Guardian on KZfaq ► is.gd/subscribeguardian
We also chatted about how his Christian beliefs inform his politics, his thoughts on the marriage equality for LGBT couples and his relationship with his late brother Christopher Hitchens. Could we find any common ground?

+Ed O'Meara True, but that's mainly because we old farts are wise enough to see that he's right on most issues. It's just his views on Trident, N.A.T.O and immigration that bother me.
@fasteddyuk
@fasteddyuk 8 жыл бұрын
Cynical Brit He probably won't get his way on either Trident or NATO - although I do agree NATO as a whole probably shouldn't exist given that it isn't the Cold War anymore. Also, there seems no circumstances when British nukes would seem useful.
@bowiefan6652
@bowiefan6652 8 жыл бұрын
Ed O'Meara Can I take it from that that you also believe that we should leave N.A.T.O, and scrap Trident? Presumably, thus entrusting the defence of these septic isles to what little remains of our own armed forces.

***** Not to mention the fact that in war zones where they can't interfere militarily they offer help to the civilian population with food, shelter, blankets, medical supplies, etc. We can't even begin to guess how many tens of thousands of lives NATO's peacekeeping troops have saved over the years.

+James Orlando No he isn't, like I wrote, I don't agree with all of his views.He admits he has a privileged lifestyle, that, after a pretty crap upbringing (no excuses, many more have had worse) could have screwed with his head but at least he acknowledges his shortcomings.He has turned to 'God' whatever that is, a sense of belonging? He rambles sometimes but I take on board his anti capitalism stance, it only favours the rich.They are the people that don't want change as they are wallowing in wealth.Brand says he wants change and wants to change.He's done pretty well so far. Will he stick to his principles? I know not, but I will continue to listen.He may fall by the wayside and end up like all the rest, talk the talk but do sod all.I'm prepared to give him the benefit, he's certainly no worse than the fookers that control us at the moment.

It's a less effective comment that gets the point across less if I say 'I don't agree with Peter Hitchens on anything except railway and energy nationalisation but...' My point was and still is, it's great to see people who don't agree having a reasonable discussion/interview and that it's possible to appreciate a person you profoundly disagree with on pretty much everything.

@melanieenmats 8 жыл бұрын
+Philip Robinson HAve you looked on a map to see how small a country the UK is? It is not important on the scale of the world. The British Empire was, but that was always going to be a temporary phase. Most of the problems the UK has are caused by global phenomenon that affect all countries. When Brittania ruled the waves, Brittania could affect global phenomenon. But that was always going to end. It's obvious if you look at the map and compare size and numbers of China or America to Britain. Britain now is not significantly more powerful than Luxemburg. The only power the UK has is that it has the backing of the financial elite, as long as london remains the capitol of financial crime of the world, as long as London keeps fighting for it's tax shelters for the world's rich.
@nosnibor800
@nosnibor800 8 жыл бұрын
+melanieenmats Yes the UK is small and we no longer have an empire, however the geographical area is not related to importance. eg Greenland. I think our problems are partly international, but I would say its because the "Establishment" has once more taken control. It always used to be in control, (eg only country squires had the vote in WW1) but then lost its power after WW2. You are right, London and the elite have taken over, and the socialist comprehensive schools, have put a stop to social mobility, such that our government is now dominated by the privately educated, with fake fraudulent "mail order" MA degrees from Ox-bridge. So how have the establishment regained power? Well the loony left did not help, neither did the corrupt Blairites, which have persuaded the electorate through the rigged undemocratic system, to return to the establishment. So we are now about to witness an era of the loony right, with the establishment in power, the dominance of the super rich, the dumbing down of education for the prols and "the working class can kiss my arse"

Jonathan Slater Since the rise of the extreme SJWs the left has been branded as a crazy feeling based cult. It is obviously false, these people are a vocal minority. The sensible lefts failure to call out these lunatics & ringfence them as the right does with neonazis has created a false image that this is what the left is like. Many right wingers instead of engaging their brains prefer to paint with a broad brush & instantly dismiss someone's opinion, cause well you know pinko this commie that, but then many on the left are also guilty of this labelling all right wingers as goose stepping nutjobs.

As a pretty small-fry American journalist who has read pretty much Christopher's entire body of published work-as well as what I can find of Peter's, which is a bit thinner on the ground-I thank you for doing this interview. Both of the brothers Hitchens have sharpened the point on my pen and on my out-of-work political sword, so this sort of thing is always appreciated. Also, I would like to confirm-to the extent that I can-that what Peter says here about the "fanboys" is dead right. I think surely you get those sorts of people with anyone who attains a level of high fame on the basis of a set of personal characteristics; the trick is never to let a sort of cult of personality develop, and I really don't think Christopher did that while he was alive. Anyway, yadda yadda. Thanks again for the interview; it was excellent.

"A set of opinions without a religious underpinning would be like a house without foundations" I'm sorry Peter, but I have to respectfully disagree. Live by the golden rule - 'do as you would be done by' Any morals that you can 'learn' from religious texts can be explained by the golden rule. Before the 10 commandments were gloriously spouted on Mt Sinai, I highly doubt that people killed, raped and stole from everybody in sight - just because they could. As for the crazy things like not eating pork in Islam, I simply do not care (unless of course it involves somebody/something else suffering, in which case refer to the golden rule). At the end of the day, all religion is - is a set of opinions written in a book. If only his brother were still alive to counter Peter's nonsense.

+Drew Mac Agreed. Didn't Moses have 3k people killed directly after receiving the 10 commandments, one of which saying "don't kill people"? You'd have thought that story would end with God saying "tut tut, failed at the first hurdle, Moses. Should've had me do it. I've got diplomatic immunity or somesuch" before setting him on fire with a bic lighter (which God would be able to sort out, being God and all that). I fear I may be rambling.

+xemy101 And of course no hand selected audience either...... Debate used to be like that on the bbc, impartial and no holds barred, even the 1970's when I first started to take notice of political things. The msm has a permanent brief to shut down genuine debate, as if its a grubby, shameful abberation that must be kept firmly in the closet.

Very interesting. After watching that interview, I've grown to like and respect Hitchens a lot more than I previous did. I certainly disagree with him on many issues, especially his views on drugs policy and as well on the part where he said the Tories are a left-wing party. I suppose it depends on one's outlook of life the way you see each party. But I understand his reasons on why he thinks the way he does. At least he's got conviction and substance to his views unlike Cameron, Osborne and plenty others. Keep it up Owen. They get more interesting as they go along.

He is absolutely spot-on about no-fault divorce. If you work with troubled young people you soon realise that the common factor is most often not abuse, not poverty etc, but a broken home. It's terribly old fashioned to say this but once you get married, and more importantly once you have children with a spouse, that's it. You're not a unit anymore, you are part of an union for life and you have dependents who are emotionally, personally, wholly reliant on that union remaining. That union should not be easy to dissolve except in grave circumstances (e.g violence). Marriage is a contract.

+sithersproductions When consuming large quantities of alcohol, D1 receptors in the dorsomedial striatum (part of the brain important in goal driven behaviours) become more easily excitable. Drugs that partially inhibit the D1 receptors actually reduced the craving for alcohol. If this is the case for alcohol, it's almost certainly the case for other drugs, as we already know they have a big effect on neurotransmitters. This is a relatively new study but read it a couple days ago, pretty interesting: medicalxpress.com/news/2015-09-neuron-responsible-alcoholism.html

A 24 yr old told me yesterday how much she loved this country, her birthplace and home. The diverse cultures that all come together, the sense of possibility. In the young at least. We have let them down. It seems to me that it's the older generations that have become pessimistic because they are not getting away with setting things up the way they want them. Our young people will save this country. But they need education, jobs, homes, the chance to support families and of being creative. Their potential will save us and we should invest in it. Or they'll sort it out themselves!
