I bought an Ox speedskim and it is great, I enjoy diy a lot but the one thing I am rubbish at was plastering, since I discovered the speedskim I can finish a wall as good as anyone, it made a world of difference.

Nicely explained podcast on the skimmers. I started out working with a gypsum spread and worked with 5 different conservation companies where I first learned how to slake & make my own lime putty plasters and mortars. So being a sucker for hype I treated myself to a 900mm Ox speedskim for an early prezzy forbeing sober for 11 years. You can actually get over many issues using a good alluminium straight edge for the base coats of render and a sponge float with the top coat work. If you really want to see how good your surface is put a strong light at the base of the wall pointing up, just don't do it when the clients watching.

I’ve never used the refina, but for me the speedskim plastic is great. I struggled to get the hang of it to begin with, probably as I was using it too late in the set, but now my plastering is quicker it’s helped me massively. I’m a decorator who plasters and last week i did my biggest ceiling yet, only 18 meters squared over artex but it flattened my magic mix great and even with my second coat of multi it did great. Unfortunately when I decided to buy it they only had the 1200 in stock but in hindsight learning with the biggie will make any smaller sizes so much easier. I do agree on the handle though, I don’t have the attachment for the Pole but the grip on it doing ceilings isn’t ideal

Great review mate, personally only use my speedskim in the early stages I still tend to finish with my marshalltown and then plasiflex for final finish, struggle to get a clean finish in corners with the speed skim due to the rounded corners

I agree to be fair mate - it can be tricky to get your internals bang on so I often use my trowel towards the later stages!

My Man size knuckles can scrape the wall if I’m not too careful! I’m wanting to try another brand! Got both plastic & metal blade speedskims, but often wondered why the blade is not angled at the ends to get right into the angles?

Hi mate - glad you liked it! I'd probably look at the Ox ST. It's a decent bit of kit but it just makes your plaster set a bit faster. If you allow for it there's no problems 👍

Hi, great video. This is exactly what I thought abut Refina grip, but somehow i endup with speedskim. I have ST 1200mm for flattering only and cannot see that i could finish plaster with that. Would you rather recomend SF or PF for finishing gypsum based plasters ? Or can i just use one Refina super flex spatula for flattering and finishing?
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 5 жыл бұрын
Hi mate. Yeah the Refina ergo grip on the Spatulas are brilliant but I do love the ST blade on the Speedskim. It's brilliant when you break it in. To be honest I just use the Superflex and my Refina Plaziflex for finishing. I just like to use a trowel for the final stages 👍

Would you still recommend refina over speedskim for the flattening spats even though you can speed your work up with the plastic spats? Where do you buy your speedskim and refina spats from and do they arrive in good condition?
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not 100% if Refina have one for flattening - you'll have to check. The Ox Speedskim ST is good I just prefer steel contact but don't get me wrong, it's still a good bit of kit. I always buy from Amazon mate and all the tools come in good condition. If not, Amazons return policy is brilliant so it's safe to buy 👍

In reply to Bodge71's question about suppliers. Try Gypsum tools, dry wall tools or dry lining supplies. Cheaper than Amazon if your getting them yourself. There are others out there as well. It depends if you want it delivered or if there is a store in your area. Interesting what Mac Plastering said. 👍
