When a customer tells you that is was working perfectly the last thing you would do is start checking if the Pipework is installed correctly…Well done and full credit to you both for finding this issue as it’s not always that obvious pipe work is often hidden..Not many plumbers I know would have found this issue.

Well Done guys I always treated old gravity conversions with some suspicion as it was common practice for plumbers and not heating engineers to install them in 60/70s and as long as they took an open vent to above the header tank and stubbed a feed and expansion (or used a combined arraignment ) they though “job done” then along comes jo dope and utilises existing pipework chopping out what they assume is unwanted they think alls well ! As we know because it doesn’t leek it is not a heating system it has to safely work !!! Top job men love the channel and glad I’m now retired 😂😂😂
@Rickblues46

Agreed with yo I’m also retired and came into the job befor fully pumped systems and some even one pipe etc it’s amazing how many of the conversions (change to fully pumped etc ) got the pipework screwed up and I spent many years resolving such problems as PB had come across … I’m finding his Chanel excellent !

Had something similar years ago the hot water cylinder was in 28mm as it was gravity feed the issue was when the trvs shut off the boiler and pump would keep running because there was no return with all the rad valves off so put in a link between flow and return with a 15mm gate valve only part way open so if all the rads shut down the water would still return to the boiler then when boiler sensed it was at max temp it would shut down and not overheat when flow was cut off
@exi
@exi 2 жыл бұрын
I went back to the FLIR from the beginning after i've understood the pipe layout. At around 7:40 you can clearly see that the little heat that the bedroom radiator is receiving is beeing fed backwards into it. The return is hotter than the inlet because of that flow-short. Not something i'd expect to see daily but if you come across something like that again you might diagnose it way faster by realising the backfeed. Stil nice work!

When I first started on heating, I did my first powerflush on a 4 bed extended house (12 rads). I took two days and couldn't get the farthest rads cleared. I ended up leaving the job - no charge. It was only when I was clearing up that I noticed a small extra rad behind the door in the livingroom. It had been open the whole time. I was so pissed off that I still just left. Lesson learned though :)

Hi PB, A standard service, checking levels and maybe a quick altering on the gas valve, this would be a standard rate, but a strip down service is very different (W/Bosch for instance) where new seals/parts are needed, do you then charge an hourly rate + parts for these strip down services????

The two laser dots show you the spot size ratio of the camera, imagine to dots on the diameter of a circle , the camera is giving you an average temperature of that whole area within the circle. If you want more accurate readings get closer. Also adjust your emissivity for the white paint, make sure you block reflections and focus the camera.

We had once a situation where my company built small house with 3 apartments. After 2 years lady calls us AC isn't working properly. Its not cooling enough. We were wondering what happened, did quick inspection, there wasn't any gass in it. We all thought that she did something, and now wants us to fix it before warranty expires. Turns out AC was never installed properly, she used it for 2 summers and never realised that it isn't working. We realised that mistake was made with not connecting condensate of inside unit properly. If it the AC run normally it would all discharge on the walls.

So, if called in for a power flush, first check all radiators with the thermal 'radar' and report to customer with any radiator issue before doing the work. That will avoid a customer maybe pulling a fast one if more work needs doing to fix the real issue at the plumber's expense. Great video.

Excellent video, absolutely tops and good fault finding. I am not so sure the customer lied as such, and probably misunderstood what was happening and assumed that paying a plumber loads of dosh for the installation it had been piped up correctly. After all if all customers fully understood central heating systems they would not need a heating engineer to install them. How many engineers have been foxed after fitting a new component (assuming it was functioning) to be thrown ten left when they eventually prove its duff? Of course it would be remiss not to listen to a customers report in detail but at the end of the day you have to make a professional judgement and see if the reported symptoms stack up - due diligence and all that. It is common throughout industry for a user to report a fault on a system on a piece of equipment that on investigation is total bollocks - we use to call them ‘user faults’.😉 With hindsight that boiler must have been cycling every 5 minutes on the pipe stat, as the boiler would not have been able to get rid of the heat generated in the hex. So rather than putting all this down to a customer lie - it would be more useful to identify what lessons there are to learn. Maybe doing some delta T measurements across the hex and at key points in the flow and return legs?

This is kind of fascinating in a weird way for me because the only place I've ever seen a water radiator was in old school buildings, or other institutional buildings from the same era. Most heating in Québec is done with electric radiators. Our electricity prices are sufficiently cheap that there's very little market space for much of anything else.

Thats because you were lucky enough that us Europeans colonised North America where you have huge landmass and features that enable easy hydropower. ;) lol. The reality of the uk is very different from what north americans think. Most of the population throughout history have been poor living in tough and often squalid conditions, whilst the upper class 1% raked in all the profits. Tbh that was one of the good sides to the bombing in ww2, it meant big slum clearance in lots of areas and spawned the building of our council estates (projects to americans) taking vast numbers of people into generally safe stable housing conditions with heating for the first time. Even the temporary homes were often preffered to traditional homes bfore the advent of radiators and boilers. The only reason those victorian homes are liveable today is because of the improvements made to them with heating syustems and insultation and double glazing. Before that you could see your breath in them for 6 months of the year, no inside toilets etc.

@@proudofyourroots9575 The fact that we have a lot of space is both a blessing and a curse. Our cities have a tendency to spread out a lot and sprawl into theses absolutely massive suburbs. The way that Europe builds its cities is definitely far better than anything that we have in North America. It makes it really hard to serve neighborhoods with public transit. It means that nothing is within walking distance. It means that you have to travel at least a quarter hour anytime you want to do anything at all. Many North Americans cities will be slums before long. We simply can't possibly keep up with the amount of upkeep required to maintain that the huge amount of infrastructure required for the sprawling cities that we've built. The US is already seeing some of that. Canada is somewhat wiser and most communities are densifying, but it will still hit us hard within a few decades time.

@@jonathanlanglois2742 The problem is high population density makes you miserable. Ask most people in the uk whats their number 1 concern , for most its mass immigration and overpopulation. @@proudofyourroots9575 Brits who think that the grass is greener here really should just immigrate. Canada is taking in hundreds of thousands of immigrants yearly. The fact is that without immigration, our population would be in a rather steep decline.

@@jonathanlanglois2742 My family tried that in the 90s, denied because my mum had cancer in the past. Thyroid cancer one of the most curable. My dad was on a good wage too, would of earned 60-80k in canada. We have family living there too which made it even worse of a refusal. Ive since had cancer myself, same one, and cured. So I doubt the point system would accept me tbh. In the uk Canada is renowned as somewhere incredibly hard to emigrate to. Looking at canadas immigration figures, 90% are from india. Uk immigrants arent even in the top ten numbers wise. Strange considering our shared history. I reckon its probably targetted, you dont get that many indian immigrants without targetting them specifically.

I was talking to my apprentice today (also my son) I was telling him that back in the 80/90s you would learn on the basis of the mood of your trainer and your bottle to answer him back, E.G. trainer's wife's In a bad mood, apprentice gets boot in balls and learns f##k all. I watched this video and actually paused and rewound and rewatched carefully. This was totally well worth watching carefully twice, totally great info, on a good day, a good plumber could have missed this problem, but PB is more than a good plumber, hopefully Craig follows him well. Good job to you both
