I grew up listening to John Scofield through my parents who are big fans of his music. So each time we’d go on holidays or just went for a little trip in the car there’d be a cassette with Sco’s music playing at some point during the journey. “Still Warm”, “Hand Jive”, “What We Do”, “I Can See Your House from Here”, “Quiet” and also his records with Miles Davis like “Decoy” or “You’re Under Arrest” are are deeply ingrained in my childhood memories.
When I was ten years old my parents took me to see John Scofield for the first time. He was touring with a great quintet (Seamus Blake, Kevin Hays, Larry Grenadier & Bill Stewart) playing the music from the “Quiet” album. This was an unforgettable experience to say the least. Since then I’ve seen him live countless other times, collecting his records, looking for bootlegs, reading his interviews and transcribing lots of his songs.
In 2014 my trio got the chance to invite a special guest for a concert at Philharmonie Köln. We expressed our desire to play with Sco and to our surprise he accepted! That first concert became a record (The Trio Meets John Scofield on Pirouet Records) and after the release John asked us to come on tour with him through Europe in 2015. You can imagine how surreal all this felt, but getting to know John, playing and hanging with him has been one of the greatest experience of my life. He’s the nicest guy you can imagine, a musician of the highest order and I’m thankful to call him a friend.
Here’s my conversation with him. Hope you enjoy.

Oh please interview everyone! It’s so difficult to connect to certain musicians and draw them out. I’ve never heard John talk so freely and enthusiastically before. Fascinating to say the least. Your perspective no doubt helps but you seem to have another connection that allowed John to open up. Marvellous, thank you so much

What a great interview! I started listening to Sco’s music in the early 90’s. Saw his two sets with Combo ‘66 in Warsaw, the other week, which were just great, two completely different concerts, and eventually met this genuine master of jazz guitar in person. What a feast!

Thanks! I love John's music. I started listening in 1986 with Still Warm. I'll be seeing his Combo '66 band on March 8th in Ithaca, NY.

Wonderful! Thx! I remember my first Classical teacher insisting on me making every note sound the same. When he auditioned for me during the lesson I wondered why not every note sounds the same while he was playing. I was scared my ears weren't too good :D - Hearing two masters of their instruments who agree on: it's actually impossible! That relieves the last bit of an early childhood trauma :D

It is kind of modern classical concept to achieve control hat you can make it sounds the same if you wish... I had that too.. interesting that in renaissance and baroque they had 'bad' and 'good' notes -- they learnt to play notes differently... not the same. The idea of control is there too... but today it is taught through neutrality - it is like you have to learn to be as indifferent as possible -- and it is quite the opposite actually))) you should be most involved

Great to see and hear John! You must interview David Becker. I heard that John is a fan of the David Becker/Joe Diorio record, Color Of Sound. In fact, I just saw David Becker perform a solo concert in New Zealand and he was amazing!

One of the albums John mentions is "Passion - Zbigniew Seifert (1979)". It is fantastic record. Another from the same year is "Ivory Forest - Hal Galper (1979). For Sco and late 70's hard Bop fans you can't go wrong.

@@PabloHeldmusic It sure is. Do you know Ivory Forest? It is hard to find and I'm not sure it is on CD or streaming. I have an old record - amazing album, one of the best I think Scofield was on in the 70's and 80's and that's saying something!

Thanks Pablo you've got a great interview style and you've brought out so much inspiring stuff from Sco here that I've never heard him talk about. Made me wonder what the "bad sound" gig was on tour with you guys, I caught you at Cheltenham Festival UK and it was in a tent, but the sound at the back was great, one of my best gig experiences. Cheers for the link, your LP Investigations is a classic and thanks for offering lead sheets on your site. pabloheld.com

I assume the Boston club he refers to @37:21 is the Regattabar in Harvard Square. I wasn't aware the on-stage sound sucks there, but I know that the noise (glasses, ice, plates) from the bar is totally inconsiderate, and distracting, and has been that way for decades. One time when I saw (Mr. Nice Guy) Frisell play a solo set there he got exasperated enough with the noise that he made a remark.
