Paddles feel great to use because we feel the pressure and power from the catch. Suddenly we think we are swimming faster! But they can be a cause for injury or exacerbate poor technique. Instead move slow and deliberate sensing the steady-even-backward pressure in the palm and the forearm. As always, before adding paddles, be aware of your current movements so you understand where you are efficient and effective and where you are not. Use the paddles to offer contrast, pitch the catch arm elbow up, and feel the firm pressure created with their big flat surface. Use that solid pressure to move forward. Paddles are not an instant correction, so don't be duped by them. Use them to heighten your awareness, shape the arm, and hold the water with the steady-even-backward pressure.
