Truly a fantastic performance. I could really feel his rage and pain. I'm not sure how I feel about the final line being translated as "the play is over," instead of "the comedy is over."
@hwoarang_2982 Жыл бұрын
yes the correct one is "the comedy is over"

The last line actually sounds more like, "the infinite comedy," which is strange.

I never cared much for Pagliacci, but this is a riveting performance. Domingo's voice rides the waves, and he is frightening. I saw Vickers in the role way back, and he was beyond terrifying. Pav sings beautifully, but just stands like a lamppost. BTW, to anyone who complains that the baritone says the final line: it is written that way! Tenors have stolen that line because, well, they're tenors!
@josefhollenbauer10435 жыл бұрын
No, that's simply untrue and unfair against Pavarotti. Both, Domingo and him, sing outstanding and on an extremely high level. Any judging can only be out of personal taste, I for example prefer Pav in some lyrical moments ("Sperai tanto"), Dom in the more dramatic ones. Compare the two singers in here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/msqbp5OFsJeWgGQ.html (the same Nedda btw) But that Pav cannot/would not act is not correct. Just watch his facial expression, it changes within splits of seconds from mourning about the lost love to rage about his wife's infidelity. His words when stabbing her, that's the jealous Italian at his best. So I'm personally convinced that Pavarotti's the better actor, maybe the best. With the last line you are right. It belongs to Tonio. But the other vid shows a good solution for this also, when Tonio has a mad laughter after the desaster he has caused. Nevertheless I prefer the baritone to say it, because it correlates better to the prologue he has in the beginning of the opera.
@josefhollenbauer10435 жыл бұрын
PS. Or watch Pav in "Vesti la giubba", and then say he couldn't act!
@eternalmariacallas22834 жыл бұрын
josef höllenbauer I completely agree! ❤️❤️❤️ Pavarotti has a wayyyyyyy better voice and his acting is subtler and more layered. Domingos is dramatic and big, but not deep enough.
@Rod_AJL3 жыл бұрын
That's actually not true, about the tenors stealing the final line....the original piece says the baritone has the final line, but in 1895 (just 3 years after the premiere) the change was introduced and sanction by Leoncavallo himself ;-) So the performance can go either way, it very much depends on the production, mostly choosing the alternate version.
@SymphonyBrahms3 жыл бұрын
I agree. Domingo is a great tenor, his singing is great, and his acting is fantastic. Corelli was also a great tenor, his singing is superb, and his acting is fantastic. Pavarotti was a great tenor, his singing is great, and his acting.....let us draw the curtain of charity over that.

Yes, there is nobody like Domingo. His voice, his acting. He doesn't just learn a role. He actually becomes the character, whether Canio, Don Jose, Rodolfo, Otello or any other role. (And there was Silvio sitting in the audience. He could see Canio getting more worked up by the second. And most of it was his fault.)

Terrifying and transporting. Domingo is the best Pagliacco and this Nedda is as well. The audience is in fear. When Nedda tries to sing her role one can feel them try to relax, as if it's all right, just part of the show. But the terror builds and no one can escape. Masterfully done. Bravi.

Love it, but I dont like that they made Taddeo say "La commedia e finita"
@swissarmytenor5 жыл бұрын
That's how it was originally written, I believe.
@omegagilgamesh5 жыл бұрын
The final line was originally given to Tonio, which makes sense as he's the manipulator behind the scenes, but since 1895 (three years after the production began playing) the tenors, being tenors, have regularly stolen the last line to the point it's just become the new standard, though many do stick to the original.
@witchfindergeneral8208 Жыл бұрын
At the beginning of the opera we hear Tonio/Taddeo singing "Si può" but he isn't Tonio/Taddeo, he is the prologue (he also sings it: "Io sono il prologo"). At the very ending of the opera when the baritone sings "la commedia è finita" he is again no longer Tonio/Taddeo and he returns to be the prologue/ending (or however you wanna call this "metacharacter"). So the fact that Canio sings "La commedia è finita" can sound cool but it doesn't make sense.
@shirleyrombough81735 жыл бұрын

I came to know this, like I suppose most people did, from the aria Vesti la Giubba (the famous "Riiiii-di, Pagliaaaacio!", if you didn't know). I saw a PBS program that at one point showed Luciano Pavarotti performing it as a solo piece, in full clown makeup. That's a great aria and even as a little kid who knew nothing about opera I was struck by the irony of the image of the weeping clown. (The popular image seems to be of Canio performing it as Pagliaccio, in full clown attire, even though in the opera, Canio only begins to put on makeup during the aria.) Once I saw the whole thing years later I was disappointed. The beauty of the aria and the whole concept of a performer having to get into character and go onstage and be funny and light-hearted when he has just been devastated... it just seems to fall flat when it's applied to such an unsympathetic character. Instead of thinking "OMG, the poor guy!" I end up thinking "Well, maybe if you weren't such a jealous, possessive, overbearing, abusive PRICK...!"
@shirleyrombough8173 Жыл бұрын
Still, we don't know if Canio is generally a jealous, creepy jerk or if he became so because of Nedda's inability to cheat discretely. While infidelity is not a capital offense, if he did pick her up off the street and give her a name and a role, she at least owed him fidelity or discretion. Don't you just love opera? Especially when it is performed so expertly.
@shirleyrombough81735 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is the best, most riveting performance. Domingo and Stratas are the greatest performers of these roles. And Domingo is the scariest. And it is the comedy is over.
