Andre Antunes likes to insert himself into other people's videos, and make them ROCK! From music videos from around the world, to funny viral videos, nothing is off the table. This time, I react to Andre's rock version of a Pakistani qawwali song by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Will it ROCK?

@@DravenUrei ......Americanizing the song means performing the song in the American style and to do that I don't need to be American, even an Indian could do that. André Antunes is not Italian, he is Portuguese.

@@relvasanalytics7852 You like your ellipses. It was a fair comment because there is an 80's rock influence here. I would go back a decade and claim it was anglicised. But you can keep going back until you reach the acoustic blues. So really he didn't just electrify it, either.

Andre is a gifted musical composer. Truly. Granted, the original material gave him a great base to work off of, but his composition on top of it is brilliant. Truly.

You'd think that these two (relatively) disparate/different genres would not fit so well together, yet they do.

Peter Gabriel has a Song with NFAK called "Signal to Noise". Also collaborated with Eddie Vedder. Jeff Buckley is a fan as well, sang some of NFAK's songs on some of his own live shows.

qawali songs range from personal love songs to spiritual worship. Andre takes the amazing music to another level of divine

often the personal love song is also a metaphor for spiritual worship. love, as an emotion, brings you closer to god.

Good stuff, and thanks for reacting to this and taking Doug up on his suggestion, as I have been most-derelict in doing so myself over the last little while!!😆 Yeah, Mr. Antune's awesome additions to what I assume was originally a highly-spiritual track really opened up my ears in a good way. All in all, a masterful job of sweetening and editing all around. More please, kind Sir?!?😇 P.S., Eddie Vedder collaborated with N.F.A.K. on a song entitled "The Face Of Love" for the soundtrack of "Dead Man Walking" back in late 1995, f.w.i.w.!!

These are not “jam sessions”. This is 600+ year art form which is carried forward by distinct families of USDTAAD’s (Meastros status) of mainly sufi poetry that will start slowly, ramp up, down, sideways taking the listener to nirvana and back. I’m not demeaning sessions per-se, because those have produced classics. Lookup Chap Tilak (Pakistani Coke Studio). It involves Rehat Fateh Ali Khan (performer in higher voice pitch, here, and successor to the maestro that was ‘NFAK’). That recording session was a rehearsal, but was so good, they published it as the main act ! Good luck on your journey to Pakistani musical art form that has left many many in awe.

Welcome! You've now entered the Rabbit hole of Ustad (maestro) Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Andre has done several other songs too. There is also one with Noor sisters, in the version of SOAD.

Nusrat was just on another lever, truly unmatched...Jeff Buckley even sung his songs in Urdu he was his one of the biggest fan and Peter Gabriel called Nusrat along with Otis Redding to hae most soulful voices.

I knew the amazing Mr. Nusrat with one of Peter Gabriel´s CDs, from the _Real World_ collection, the song was Must Must and it completely blew my mind off. I always listen to that song when I´m feeling blue or sad, it lifts my spirit up and injects sunshine and joy into my soul in a way nothing nor no one else can. Andre´s version of that song is out of this world too. Best regards from Argentina :)

@vanina s I am glad to hear that, if you want I can introduce to some other Pakistani music. Will highly recommend Coke Studio it has subtitles aswell and if you like Nusrat you may wanna check out his nephew Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Also for similiar feeling from a women you should definetely listen Abida Parveen she is so amazing.

Just to add more context here, the original genre is called qawwali in the region of its birthplace. This genre is associated with Sufism, mystic branch of Islam so more than a jam its more like a trance. The lyrics usually come from the great Sufi mystics of the past with a common theme of longing for their love (the mighty) with a passion and that's where the emotion and passion come from. Sufism is quite different from mainstream Islam like all mystic branches of Abrahamic religions where it doesn't concern with worldly affairs and its solely between creator and creation

Never heard of any of these guys but I definitely have to watch both these videos. I don't know if the song still makes sense since - as you - I don't understand the lyrics. But technically it's really great, at no time the drum, bass and guitar is too much in front of the vocals. You guys are always good for a surprise.
