When I saw a Pal Benko game from Agadmator for no seeming reason, I feared the worst for him. But he lived a useful, fun, productive and unselfish life, and I'm glad Agadmator had a tribute prepared. RIP Pal Benko.

As a fellow Hungarian, I'd like to mention that Pal Benko was not only a brilliant player, but a legendary study and puzzle composer too. My favourite of his works is definitely this study: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/freZdc902NbTaY0.html Unfortunately I couldn't find an english video for this, but even without understanding the commentary you can see the starting position and the winning sequence, which I think is absolutely mindblowing.

Interestingly Fischer was also half Hungarian, his Dad was Pal Nemenyi, the renown Hungarian scientist. He provided child support to Fischer's Mom for the rest of his life. The guy who was named as the father of Fischer on the birth certificate had never entered the US.

P. Benko was also the first winner of the Fischer random tournament held in Kanjiža, Serbia 1996. The game of chess nowadays known as Chess 960.

Yeah its a great game, but you gotta look at the clock wow! Nepo showed such strength to play that endgame so fast and put all the pressure on. Anyone can rush but not anyone can execute a 120 odd move game without giving your opponent a minute to rest in the entire endgame.

Pretty sad, the shirt he is wearing in Susan's post was a tournament he played in my homeland, Bahia, Brazil in 1999, called "Benko in Bahia" I was born in 2000, but I heard from a friend who played that tournament (which he got second place, with 6/7, Benko got 7/7) that he had the opportunity to get a three fold repetition against Benko, but he got nervous and hangs his bishop, almost tiding first with this legend. I wish I have a opportunity like this in the future, sure I would've learned a lot. RIP Pal Benko

I started playing the Benko after watching your video on Bent Larsen's brutal attack against Efim Geller. An underrated giant of chess Benko was, inventive and thoughtful. He is missed.

Pal benko was such a great guy. I m sure even before Bobby Fischer.. pal benko realised that Bobby Fischer will become world champion that's why he gave his seat. Hats off to pal benko..

I think it'd be great if you supported this tournament by joining it or putting a link to it (it is a lichess tournament). This would be a great chance to get more members in as well as encourage people to play chess.

At 10:13, if king c3, then queen captures on g4, now if Fischer queens the pawn, then queen to b4 is check mate.

Without Benko, Fischer never would've become World Champion in 1972. He gave up his spot in the 1970 Palma de Mallorca interzonal for Bobby. RIP

I just played in the Pal Benko memorial on lichess and i was shocked because I had the black pieces and my opponent was rated 2097. It was really a big disadvantage for me for not knowing the lines on such variation. I honestly don't know what to do in my position and I played badly. Yeah it was so sad, now I know that I still have more to learn.

around 7:00 what about after fischer's rook takes the pawn if benko's queen would move to e5, fischer could move queen to c7 protecting and not putting his king into a bind. This to me seems to be a fine position for black.
