I wish you obtained an adjustable piston tamper like the cookie press for this. I'm not sure who else makes a similar one. I have one in the mail on the way from taobao China. It is 58.5mm and tamps consistently like a manual puqpress.

Hey Lifestyle Lab, What do you think of the new "Idroprep" tamper. I guess it has a membrane that holds a fluid or gel against the coffee surface. From what I understand, the pressure is even across the coffee even if the coffee is not evenly distributed. Idk if that is exactly how it is described. Please let me know what you think. I use both. One to level off then calibrated tamp. Gives me a consistent result everytime

I use both. The spin distributor to level the shot and then the calibrated tamper to give a consistent tamp. Works really well.

I like the self-leveling tampers, like the Decent brand one. It's like a palm tamp where it's always level but in a more traditional form factor. On those no need to set a depth level (although you still have the potential issue of not being able to tamp deep enough if you're under dosing for your basket). Normcore brand is also good and cheaper, it's a calibrated and also self-leveling tamper, but I prefer the non weight calibrated so I can feel the coffee being compressed.

Cool video! Do you think it would be worthwhile to make a video comparing the two sides of the palm tamper? I find myself using the spinning side more (for both distribution and tamping), since I believe it distributes the grounds more evenly. Thanks!

I use both each time. First the palm tamper to level out and a standard competition tamper to get what I consider the right tamp pressure based on the beans and grind I have dosed into the basket. It took a little while to get a feel for the average setting on the palm tamper but once that was dialed in, it never changed after that. Near perfect every time now. You can never have enough coffee gear. Never!

If you use the Decent tamper it comes with a guard to guarantee a level tamp. I think the Decent tamper really gives you the best of both worlds and is where people should go if they're interested in one of these kinds of tampers.

Early! Personally, Calibrated tampers give me a good feel in the hand and give me a good grip, and consistent results. Great video though!

There are some calibrated Tamps like the Normcore V4 that have a central shaft and flat area that sits on the portafilter to help direct the pressure evenly.

Another good video, I use a palm Tamper because of my Arthritis in my thumb, so it works best for me :) Hope to see some more videos on coffee Roasters :)

Personally, I find a combination of consistency and flexibility from a combination of an inexpensive , Amazon leveled followed by any decent tamper. The leveler insures the tamper starts with a a level surface…. The tamper finish allow flexibility of variation in dose

I’m a complete beginner, and I’m about to ask a very dumb question, but you say that the Breville Barista Express needs a 54mm tamper, but the link to it on Amazon only has a 53mm. I don’t see an option for 54mm. Help me lol

You can buy a calibrate tamper that self-levels so when you compare that and a palm tamper it just comes down to cost and preferance.

What I like is how it consistently controls the variable of depth to keep the puck at the desired distance away from the shower screen.

While I like the idea of a level tamp with the palm tamper, tamping to a precise depth seems error prone. Bean density varies so much by type and roast level that it seems to defeat any attempt to tamp by depth; even at precise doses. As you mention, the palm tamp method is likely to create air pockets or excessive pressure that would adversely affect the extraction. I use a distribution tool first followed by a calibrated tamper. Yeah I may sometimes be off a bit with level, but it seems to be the best I can come up with. I am open to other methods, anyone have thoughts to add to this?

Consistency matters more than tamp pressure, so palm tamper just helps remove one variable from the equation. With a set depth (say, just low enough that the shower screen doesn't leave an impression on the dry puck), you can adjust dose and/or grind size for perfect extraction when dialing in a bag of beans.

My workflow. Df64, then needle distributor, then angled distributor then palm tamp for levelling then calibrated tamp. Sounds like a lot but no guesswork there.

I followed the instruction. Reached 25s 35g water with 19g of beans. However the pressure meter shows almost max pressure when brewing. The espresso tastes quite bitter. I don’t understand why I am reaching this ideal time and water but the pressure went too high?

This is very common on this machine, and not an issue. However, if you are getting bitter shots, you will want to either increase your dose, or decrease your yield

I just bought one palm tamper for my breville barista pro upon your advice I wanna know how to adjust the depth and shall I use a dose of 18 or 19 grams

I use the Force Tamper - the way it's set up, you can't over-tamp and (assuming you seat the top part correctly on the basket) you can't tamp off level.

Came here after "7milescoffeeroaster". 10 - 30 pounds of pressure depend on your grind sizes. "Tamping harder doesn't make a difference" is b...s...t. Have to find out the number between 10-30 with your right fine grind sizes. P/s: Sorry, my English not good. But you know what i mean, right?

I find distribution to be much more important than tamping, if the tamp is level enough and just compressed that's already sufficient. The grounds distribution is much more vital to avoid channeling and to get better coffee out of it

Neither one. I would use a leveling tamper like Bravo, EZ TAMP, Force tamper or Levtamp from Kafatek. Perfect tamping pressure and leveled shot at the same time.

I wish breville tamper options were as good as the ones available for standard sized baskets(58mm) :(

Espro Calibrated tamper is bad because it’s only 58mm while most baskets are 58.5 leaving a gap. Purchased Barista Hustle tamper which is 58.4 going edge of the basket. With the OCD distributor and BH tamper I am getting great results 👌 Espro was waste of money for me I wouldn’t recommend the tamper 👎

It doesn’t matter if you use more pressure than the tamper is calibrated for. It has no impact on the coffee.

Depends what pressure the tamper is calibrated to. I have a whole video explaining the impact of tamping pressure and at what point it becomes irrelevant

One side is a distributor to spread the coffee evenly in the basket. The flat side is the actual tamper surface
