In this video I show how I've customized my Panasonic GH5 II / GH5M2 camera for effective video recording use. I also give a few general usage tips as well!
Sorry the camera's screen wasn't always in perfect focus. Next time I make a video like this I'll set a focus area which would help a lot I think. This was meant to be a quick and simple video. Recorded on Panasonic HC-X2000 camera.

I'm glad you found this video useful! I have never posted a video like this but I am quite experienced with cameras! The GH5M2 is a great camera, you made a solid choice! By the way, at 12:16 I changed that button for image stabilization enable / disable to "Focus Ring Lock". When I use this camera for driving shots and if I'm in manual focus, I might sometimes press that button to disable the focus ring on the lens so I don't accidentally change focus when my hand is holding the camera. I can still re-acquire focus using the AF ON button.

Hello, thanks to share your interesting video. I would like to ask a question, because I have a doubt: I only make videos in 4K, if I were to film with the GH5 MKII with the Leica 12-60 and use both stabilizations (internal + lens), I will lose something in image quality, than to use only one stabilizer? Thank you
@BackusCreativeImaging
@BackusCreativeImaging 2 жыл бұрын
You will not lose any video quality by using the "Dual I.S." feature on a Panasonic camera. Optical image stablization and the sensor shift stabilization are physical forms of stabilization, not a digital crop like the "Active SteadyShot" mode on a Sony. You will not lose image quality (I think you're referring to sharpness) unless you use digital stabilization.

3 Questions please: -Do you have any issues with overheating even when just messing with the settings and not recording? I noticed my gh5 ii gets a little warm. -I tried looking for a firmware update as of 9/9/21 but theres only some for the GH5, not the Mark II. Have they released one for the GH5M2? Currently on V 1.0 -When I try to hold the wheel button to set the top custom function (right above the set/menu) it doesn't allow me to set any custom feature. Nothing happens. But the other buttons on the wheel allow me to set a custom feature. How do I fix this?
@BackusCreativeImaging
@BackusCreativeImaging 2 жыл бұрын
The GH5M2 has a new processor but doesn't overheat unless in the most extreme conditions. Yours could possibly be defective. I don't know why it's doing that. I don't know why your top direction of the dial won't let you set a custom setting either :(

You have included a lot of information here. Do you know where the digital zoom is located? I don't film or shoot still with this but I found it handy to crop in on my gray card when setting the WB.
@BackusCreativeImaging
@BackusCreativeImaging 2 жыл бұрын
I can't find the digital zoom setting. An alternative would be to use the sensor crop mode (Image Area of Video) on the camera (called Ex Tele Conv on the original GH5). That particular setting is not a digital zoom but is a 1:1 pixel read out. In 1080p it is roughly a 2.6x zoom and in 4K, roughly 1.3x. I have it assigned to a button. I do use it to get another 1.3x zoom from my lenses. So the Panasonic-Leica 10-25mm f/1.7 is more like a 20-50mm and 65mm lens :)
@gcprost
@gcprost 2 жыл бұрын
@@BackusCreativeImaging Thanks, but I found this and I have it assigned to a button. I use it to extend the rrach of my lens but it really not a substitute for the digital zoom. They probably thought nobody used it. This feature is also on my Panasonic PX 270.

This camera is a big upgrade from my GH3. What cage is that?
@BackusCreativeImaging
@BackusCreativeImaging 2 жыл бұрын
It's the GH5 cage by SmallRig. You can look it up on the Amazon website. This camera is a huge upgrade over the GH3. I had the GH4 in 2014 to 2017, and later the GH5 in 2017. I'll be keeping the GH5M2 for at least 3 or 4 years. If you can afford it, get this one over the GH5. If you need more features, the GH6 will be out this year. I don't need the crazy video performance of the GH6, but I did want a more well rounded GH5. This camera (the GH5 II / GH5M2) and the Panasonic-Leica f/1.7 zooms are pretty much perfect for me, alongside the Panasonic HC-X2000 camcorder which is very useful in other ways a DSLM camera isn't. Both shoot up to 4K at 60fps internally 4:2:0 10-bit video to dual SD cards and of course they don't over heat. The contrast based autofocus is finally respectable in the GH5M2 as well. Not perfect but definitely usable :)

Question from a newbie: I want to create close up videos of birds eating seed off the deck in my backyard very similar to this example ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jqqidZiUmZPHaY0.html ). I want to run the video camera for very long periods of time so it must resist overheating so that is why I am considering a Panasonic GH5ii but I am concerned about Panasonic's autofocus. Do you think this type of video could be created with manual focus ? Do you think the autofocus of the Panasonic GH5ii is good enough for this type of video ? ( If you think there is a better camera or camcorder option than the Panasonic GH5ii I would be grateful for any advice. I know the Sony A7Siii is also a good option but it is pretty expensive. ) Thank you for your help. PS - I would really be grateful for any advice you can give on this topic.
@BackusCreativeImaging
@BackusCreativeImaging 2 жыл бұрын
I looked at the video you linked. He used manual focus. There's a few options for the ideal camera setup to use for this scenario, it mainly depends on your budget and lighting conditions you'll be shooting in. Assuming you'll be recording in normal daylight or decent lighting conditions, you don't even need a super fast lens (regarding fast maximum aperture). The lens he was using was probably 35mm in full frame terms. It was placed probably a little over a foot away from the seeds and he set manual focus to the seeds. Also, his aperture had to be stopped down for that relatively wide depth of field (region of focus), because the closer your subject is, the tighter your depth of field is at the same aperture. So to recreate the exact look at close range, you don't need a super fast and therefore expensive lens because you're going to be stopping down the aperture to like f/5.6 at least (on Micro Four Thirds). Regarding cameras, the A7S III is really nice but very expensive. Canon over heats too. Panasonic is the way to go for videos like this. I own one of their best small sensor camcorders the HC-X2000 (it has active cooling, built in NDs, 10 bit 4:2:0 at 4K60, 4 hour battery life, 25-600mm equivalent, very close minimum focusing distance). If you like that camcorder but don't need the SDI output, the much cheaper HC-X1500 has identical optics and abilities, just also doesn't come with the top handle (can be purchased separately later). However since you'd probably want better low light performance, the GH5 II or original GH5 is probably what you want. As for for lens ... you can go cheap, there are tons of options available. Since you want close ups, a big aperture (expensive) isn't needed. For versatility, I'd recommend the Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 lens, if you can afford it. That's a 24-120mm equivalent on full frame. It's cheaper than my main lens but you don't need a super fast aperture when recording animals up close. There are cheaper lenses out there but the Leicas have great optical quality. Set manual focus and have fun. GH5 II supports USB-C charging via power delivery, that would be a nice setup in my opinion :)

I used the HC-X2000 camcorder to record all the animals seen in this video (the ground shots), handheld with manual focus: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bLl8grCLrLuck6c.html - the camera has a really bright screen that is much sharper than the Sony's or the Panasonic mirrorless screens (although it's viewfinder isn't as nice as the EVF on the GH5 II). You can punch in while recording for manual focus (something you can't do on a GH5 and GH5 II). Overall it's my favorite camcorder for wildlife, at the size and price. It's quite small. So, manual focus can work on the Panasonic but you have to put some effort into it. If you're just into videos of animals in normal lighting conditions, the camcorder could be a good option. I use both the GH5 II and the camcorder as they each compliment each other's strengths and weaknesses quite well. Both shoot up to 4K60 at 10 bit 4:2:0 and 1080p up to 120fps (although GH5 II goes up to 180 fps in 1080p I think) which is good enough for me.
@BackusCreativeImaging
@BackusCreativeImaging 2 жыл бұрын
@@newlifeeveryday1821 You do not need an A7S III for the close up wild life shots. With such a large sensor ... you'd have to stop down your lenses to like f/8.0 at least to record birds up to a foot away or so ... kinda negating the "big" sensor idea anyway. So, Micro Four Thirds like the GH5 II or even the HC-X1500 camcorder could be good enough. Granted ... the camcorder with its tiny sensor doesn't win the low light awards but ... it's very practical for "up close" shots of animals in normal lighting. It's actually quite decent in low light as well as the maximum aperture is f/1.8 while Sony's NX80 and Canon's XF400 are f/2.8 on the larger 1 inch sensors. Overall the features of the HC-X1500 camcorder are better, and no over heating. Or if you want the interchangeable lenses and bigger Micro Four Thirds sensor, go with the GH5 II. Another good camera for all this would be the much cheaper Sony ZV-1 which has a good lens, and you can set manual focus, would need charging via power delivery ... but it over heats on longer recordings beyond like 5 minutes in warm weather.

Since you were very helpful in your previous answer do you mind if I ask you another question: If I chose a GH5 or GH5ii will I need ND filters to shoot they type of bird videos I showed you ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jqqidZiUmZPHaY0.html ) on the deck in my backyard and perhaps along the treeline of my yard which is adjacent to a forest which is sunny or shady depending on the time of day and season ? If I will need ND filters can you suggest the best brand for the GH5/ii? Will the ND filters need to be changed throughout the day as the sun changes location in the sky ? Thank you again.
