First off, Justinpressions is something i am 1000% for. Second off: I’m thoroughly convinced paper mario is a series where the peoplr on the ground floor understand why people love it but the people actually calling the shots don’t understand at all, nor do they care. The result is a game with the charm and details but core structure that flies on the face of anything approaching good design

This. All of this
@Nyzer_
@Nyzer_ 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree with the second point, because I doubt any big shots cared enough about the system of Color Splash to tell devs "NO, YOU CAN'T SORT BATTLE CARDS INTO SUBMENUS, EVERYONE MUST SCROLL THROUGH THE ENTIRE DECK EVERY TIME". I honestly just think this series is being developed by a team that either hate or simply don't understand turn-based combat. Thus, whenever the combat is uninspiring or frustrating, they think they've succeeded.

@@Nyzer_ Maybe it's less that and more of a need to reinvent the wheel each time something new is supposed to come out. Nintendo loves changing things up when they can as seen with the Wii, DS, and Switch now. Who's to say they aren't trying that with game mechanics?
@jombilywobbily
@jombilywobbily 4 жыл бұрын
Damn that second point is so on point. The charm of the core games is they have "character" with a fun streamlined combat, but when the devs see how well that worked in TTYD, they remove it. It's like obsessing at what makes the Mario platformers fun and then...remove Mario's jump. Wh-why?

@@Hysteria98 There's rumours that there's a "QA Team" in Nintendo that is obsessed with standardizing Mario design, which explains not only why the Paper Mario series became so bland but also the New Super Mario Bros series as well being as spicy as salt. This along with an intentional de-emphasis of plot and character that was given after Super Paper Mario (apparently less than 1% of Club Nintendo poll responders said they liked the plot which is... very frustrating) and a mandate for novelty in Nintendo's design philosophy (that never seemed to appear in the New Super Mario Bros series but whatever) that "required" the undoing of the jrpg style combat. Again, this is all rumours, and there are contradictions (why was BoTW and BoTW allowed to do design seperate from Miyamoto and allowed to experiment with odd tonality and new characters when Paper Mario, a spinoff isn't ...?). But allegedly this rumored group is also to blame for why Waluigi is so segregated from the rest of the Mario universe.

Jacob Pipers It’s not the “depth” of the combat that’s the problem, but rather the design. The reason people want the old PM gameplay back is because it was *fun to play,* and rewarded you for playing skillfully while at the same time still having variety due to the various badges and partners at your disposal. Whereas in TOK, it doesn’t know whether it wants to be an RPG or puzzle game and so comes across as a half-assed amalgamation of both instead. If it wants the combat to work better, it should either remove the turn-based. battles entirely like in Super Paper Mario or return EXP and badges so that the RPG progression feels more meaningful.

It's kind of a jarring experience but honestly it's ballsy of Jim to let someone else (even close to him) let someone else express themselves on his channel. I can imagine maybe it was a bit nerve wracking to think of doing. Or not, lol, I dunno whether or not that's the case. But I have to say I am cool with it, accepting, and you did a really good job! :)

I rather like the idea of Jim adding his two cents into Justin-impressions videos as to just why he doesn’t give a shit about the games in the first place. Just a quick comment like in this one is funny and keeps things connected to him still.

The end of the video is a good tl:dr if they just stop trying to make a half assed rpg on topnof what they're trying to do or just do the rpg part justice then it'd be an easy 10/10 like, imagine this game but you have the classic paper mario gameplay for the battles instead

@@nobodyinparticular9640 Not really. Bug Fables easily rivals TTYD, yes, but as far as I'm aware it's a one-off that they don't intend to follow up on ? Like, the strength of Paper Mario is that it's a franchise. It's something you can look forward to every few years (or at least we could have, if they stopped fucking with the formula...). Bug Fables was excellent, and I'm certainly going to replay it every so often 'cause it's just that good, but we're not waiting for a Bug Fable 2. It's done and over with. It doesn't fulfill the same itch for me.

Nintendo feels they have to reinvent every new installment of a game franchise or they wont release it at all. It's the reason we don't have a new F-Zero game. I don't *think they have ever heard the saying "If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it"

i mean to be fair mario and zelda's reinventions were super well received and i kind of respect a company that, for the most part, explicitly wants to do something different and new each time in an industry filled with games that are the same as the first really successful one but with a different gimmick. i wish some of that would rub off on gamefreak, id kill for an interesting pokemon game.

I remember reading that they took it in this direction originally cause they wanted to promote the Mario & Luigi series as they main flagship mario rpg series. Which is ironic considering that they guys who made those games are now bankrupt. I just wish they would take it back to the old rpg formula they had.
@JoeyMarshall

@@Altoryu But can't you use logic to dictate that they went bankrupt because nobody was bloody buying the games? If they revert Paper Mario to it's old form, the wankers in all of us will like it because "It's like thousand year door" but they won't sell any copies so what's the point?
@CURSEDSei
@CURSEDSei 4 жыл бұрын
@@JoeyMarshall The last 'couple' of games AlphaDream developed were Remakes that had needless and often-times disliked additions made to them. The studio went bankrupt because they weren't allowed to develop anything new since 2015 and the release of the 'Paper Jam' game, which would be on Nintendo. The only games they worked on (and likely only allowed to do) were the remake of Superstar Saga for 2017 and the remake of Bowser's Inside Story for 2019. They usually had at least one other project in development for release alongside the Mario and Luigi series, but after 2009 that was halted. I can't speak of what all was happening, but that was likely what killed the studio. That, and Nintendo exerting more control... especially since by 2012 the Paper Mario team were barred from modifying or creating new characters that 'touch upon the Mario universe', which might be partly why they were made to scale back. It can be rather difficult to get insider information as to what happened though with Japanese companies unless it starts to hit upon Kojima/Konami levels of fractures. It could be a situation like 'Metroid: Other M' where development went... fine, but the game was just trash. Or it could have been a bloody mess of things with Nintendo cracking down harder on what they could or couldn't do. The only thing of note I've seen about things regarding Nintendo is them shoving Paper Mario away from the RPG spectrum because they didn't feel the need for it with Mario and Luigi around. Which implies that AlphaDream may have been needlessly locked by Nintendo into it without being allowed to really adjust or sculpt the RPG mechanics for M&L since they were the defacto 'rpg game' side then.

You're so right Justin, about everything in this game. I'd encounter something amazing in the game, visually or story-wise, then I'd get into a battle and all the joy would get sucked out of me because of the godawful combat system. This game is rated for 7 AND UP and some of the puzzles, especially in the boss battles were excruciating. This game would've easily been an 8 or 9/10 for me but every time I think about how fucking awful the battle system in this game is, it just makes me feel bitter! And the most exciting boss battles for me were the very rare ones that didn't involve that cursed ring system. DO MORE REVIEWS JUSTIN.

@@jefurihartono1630 I'm generally *good* at puzzle games, but what I am not is super *fast* at puzzle games, and that's what gets me--if there weren't a time limit or if failure to complete it perfectly just meant you got off a less-than-great attack rather than no attack at all? It probably would have been massively better. Instead, I'm kind of enjoying it but I am burning a hell of a lot of coins on extending the time, and I'm not even that far in yet.
