Ghost of Tsushima is a very fun samurai game, and if that's what you want, then Sucker Punch has you covered. If it's not what you want, then who even knows what to say to you?
Visually breathtaking, mechanically pleasant, Ghost of Tsushima is just supremely enjoyable. It features some open world busywork, but the beautiful setting and delightful mix of stealth and honorable combat make for significantly moreish entertainment.
It's like Assassin's Creed, but significantly better.

@@allendefullismkinsshi5881 It'd have probably resulted in the indie scene outright overtaking the "AAA" industry. I think one of the major reasons "photorealism" gets pushed so much as the standard for what "good" graphics look like is specifically because they're so expensive to create, meaning those without capital can't challenge the dominance of those with capital. If your tastes have been built up over time by advertisements and hype pieces for photorealistic games, and only "AAA" publishers can afford to make such games, then there's not a lot of competition and these companies can shit out extremely shit and generic content without worrying overmuch about people just playing another game. These inflated budgets aren't necessarily because "games are so expensive to make these days" but rather an intentional gatekeeping measure to reduce competition for a manufactured market. I think this is why we don't see AAA games of Minecraft and the like. The expectations for that style of game aren't biased in favor of capital, so a Minecraft-style game with AAA graphics is extremely liable to be forgotten when a bunch of indie titles come out that are basically just better. There's no real AAA attempts at 2D sidescrolling games despite (or rather _because of_) their popularity, someone that spends a fraction of a budget making a game with purely 2D assets can make a far more aesthetically pleasing game.

If I’m heavily invested, enjoying the story and theme of a game I tend to not find anything boring or repetitive because I’m having fun and motivated to keep unlocking stuff for that game. I’ve always thought that’s why I see such differing opinions in reviews for open world games, it all depends on their mood and enjoyment of the game overall I think.

Fun fact the traditionally primary weapon of a samurai was the bow or the naginata not the katana. When the samurai has to use their katana it means shit went wrong. At least on the battlefield. They did carry their katana as their weapon of station outside the battlefield which is probably why people think they use them on the battlefield as their go too weapon. Samurai's tactics and battles were generally fast and skirmish like so quick strikes distance and ranged. Hence the bows and the naginata. If you look at their armor their design for the ease of bow use and to protect against arrows and less for blades

Similar to western knights/soldiers- the sword, particularly the one handed arming sword, was your secondary for when shit had got fucky. I was blown away by how well made this game was technically. It felt like once games could break away from disc constraints and just download over the internet, the need to properly optimize games was forgotten but they also forgot all of the benefits it has. The memory size is so small that even on a normal PS4 I haven't had a load time longer then 10 seconds. And as you said, the frame rate is smooth as butter even when you have the screen absolutely covered in dozens of these gorgeous special effects with everything moving in the wind and the realistic day and night and weather cycles. This game really is something special. Taking modern AAA quality but just giving it so much shine and polish that is breathtaking. So good.

Couple of notes/tips for this one: - As this was my one main concern after watching the ACG review before purchase figured I'd start with it for any others who might worry: yes it looks absolutely amazing, however it also runs just fine on a 'regular' PS4. Fan has spun up at times but other than that it runs perfectly fine, with no noticeable hiccups so far. - You can afford to button mash on single enemies, but even then you're likely to get smacked around a lot as they block and knock you back, stabbing you if you don't dodge in time. Slow and steady wins your fights here, whether you're going stealth or face-to-face combat. Practice your dodges and parries and combat goes from getting cut down yet again to an almost dance of death as you cut down enemies left and right with ease. - While it is an open world with tons of stuff to do and see after the introductory missions where you're let loose there is some high value in doing the main story missions early on, at least until you recruit your initial band of warriors, as those missions act as tutorials for the game and more importantly provide you with more gear like the bow and a stealth armor set, both of which are great additions to your arsenal. - While there are a bunch of skills you can spend your technique points on depending on how you want to play there are a few that you should prioritize and get as quickly as you can to make things easier. First and foremost is probably the double and then triple standoff skills, as the ability to kill three enemies at the start of battle with only three button presses and good timing can be a huge help. If you find yourself doing a lot of stealth then the triple chain assassination skills are a good bet as well. When you get your bow the concentration skill allows you to temporarily slow down time when aiming by pressing R3, which is a huge help. Deflect arrows can be of great help, no more needing to dodge when they shout just hold block until you deflect the arrow, and lastly the 'roll to avoid fall damage' skill can help if you botch a jump or a fall is a little too far, though keep in mind it won't save you from falls that are too high. - Nature is (mostly) your friend in this game. Foxes will lead you to shrines that increase the number of charms you can equip, golden birds will lead you to points of interest, and as noted in the video the wind will lead you to whatever objective/waypoint you currently have active. The only exceptions to that are bears and boars, which you will want to kill for their skins for upgrades(don't bother the deer, they don't drop anything and hunting them only wastes your time/resources). - Even if you're trying to go full 'honorable' combat for any enemy camp it's valuable to sneak in first to see if there are any optional objectives, primarily the 'observe enemy commander' one, as if you observe them before you kill them you can get two points of progress towards your next stance, allowing you to get new stances much faster.

I disagreed with Jim's sentiment here. There's several things throughout the game there just to make you laugh, I feel. If you see a sign telling you to bow, do it. Hey Jim, I'm really confused. This IS a AAA game, right? I keep doing google searches to find out what controversy is behind this game, but I haven't found anything yet? No treating employees like slaves, sexual harassment charges, misleading marketing, or loads of microtransactions? The most I found is that some people were unhappy that a white guy played a Japanese musical instrument at the E3 presentation. I thought it was REQUIRED for developers/publishers to act like unapologetic supervillains in order to get AAA games made? After all, game prices haven't gone up from $60 in X years and all that! How could this game have possibly been made without treating employees like shit and loading it up with more real world money gambling than a casino?

It's a Sony first party game like God of War or Horizon Zero Dawn. You can also count games like Bloodborne there. Which is a so called "second party" game, which isn't a real term, but something Sony uses for third party developed games that are treated like first party games, not only financially but with technical support for the new engine for example or Sony producing the music, etc. Like Jim once said too, games that are made by console manufacturers have this special opportunity that they are not made to produce money directly, but they are made to elevate the selection of games on a console. In other words, they are not made to make money (directly), but they are made to be good. For some reason though, multiplayer games - even first party ones - still have microtransactions and such in them. Maybe there is an economical reason why that must be. I don't know. The Uncharted series is also a first party one but has microtransactions for their multiplayer portion. However while I tried to speak in general terms, only Sony first party games actually live that way. Again, with the exception of multiplayer. But that's something that Sony doesn't do as much anyway. For some reason, Microsoft and Nintendo still do stuff like microtransactions, even smartphone game models and even the lootbox BS in their single player titles or singleplayer portions of titles. In my opinion, that's the biggest reason why first party exclusives are important and also the only space within the triple A industry where actual "art" can exist. I know this art-debate is tiring and I don't try to solve it here. But if there is one big factor that decides if games are art or not, it's the monetary one. If a game isn't made to directly make money (only indirectly by console sales), but to raise the value of a platform - of the industry itself if you will - then there is the actual chance to create something of actual artistical value. Or at the very least a fun game. If that description is too vague for you: If it is not made to "engage" the player with grindy mechanics that are there to make you wanna spend money on microtransactions to not play it anymore, it's good. And if it's a first party game, it doesn't care for "player engagement" and microtransactions but wants to sell consoles instead.

Commenting to help the metrics. A game that Jim finds enjoyable and makes a video of should be praised. May give it a try now.

The stand off feature is like that one time a bully wanted to fight me and I came out to fight. He then however didn't want to stand off anymore. Maybe he should have stealth attacked me like some of the others did. Guess he didn't expect me too. Not sure why I typed this but ehm. Yea. Ghost of Tsushima is great. Be safe everyone.
