GODZILLA. The 1992 Tooheys Bathurst 1000 Winner and 1992 Australian Touring Car Championship Winner, The R32 Skyline GT-R.
The WINFIELD Number #1 GT-R piloted by Mark Skaife and Jim Richards was the winner at Mount Panorama for a 2nd year in a row.
WINFIELD GT-R won the 1992 Australian Touring Car Championship.
Driver Championships were also won by Skaife 1st and Richards in 2nd, Longhurst was 3rd with the BMW M3 Evolution in the final Drivers Championship Standings in 1992.
Australian Motorsport was changed forever after this event and proceeded with an amalgamation of today's V8 SUPERCARS. This also meant the removal and abolishment of turbo charged engines in the top tier of Australian Motorsport and only 2 car Manufacturers that compete for the title.
In this video the car is the GIO Racing GT-R with Mark Gibbs driving on the day along with Rohan Onslow, they finished 6th at Mount Panorama.
The eventual championship drivers were Mark Skaife and Jim Richards in the Winfield GT-R.
*************************************
For those wondering why The Chase or "Caltex Chase" is not in the video:
Channel 7 decided to edit out The Chase section.
In 1987 Mike Burgmann died after his VK Commodore SS Group A became airborne at 260km/h along the second hump on Conrod Straight.
Bathurst hosted the WTCC in 1987 and the FIA regulations did not allow international tracks to have a straight longer than 1.5 km in that class, the second hump was removed and "The Chase" added.
In 1991 the Winfield GT-R (Skaife) reached 293km/h along Conrod Straight, similar speeds to the V8 Supercars of today.
*************************************
The 1992 Tooheys Bathurst 1000 was stopped due to torrential rain and multiple crashes. The results were compiled using the 143rd completed lap, 18 laps short of full race distance.
The Fastest Lap of the race was -- #1 Mark Skaife -- 2:16.47
The top 10 final finishing positions for the 1992 Bathurst 1000 were as follows:
1st Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R
Mark Skaife / Jim Richards
2nd Ford Sierra RS500
Dick Johnson / John Bowe
3rd Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R
Anders Olofsson / Neil Crompton
4th BMW M3 Evolution
Tony Longhurst / Johnny Cecotto
5th Holden VP Commodore
Win Percy / Allan Grice
6th Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R
Mark Gibbs / Rohan Onslow
7th Holden VN Commodore SS Group A SV
Andrew Miedecke / Troy Dunstan
8th Ford Sierra RS500
Wayne Park / David Parsons
9th Holden VL Commodore SS Group A SV

The Bathurst GT-R of course had far more in common with the road-going counterpart than the V8 supercars, which are special purpose built machines with Holden and Ford bodies over the top...

The majority of Australian Motorsport fans just could not do that for the other manufacturers. Which is why the V8 Supercars enjoy so much success today, almost every 2nd car on the road is either a Holden or a Ford.

A V8 Commodore is a versatile car - can carry 5 people comfortably, tow a boat, cruise down a highway or be thrashed on a track. A GTR can only do one of those things well. They are completely different cars. To have a GTR you need to have another car for daily duties. A V8 Commodore does it all.

@blastermitch that was my dream as well, I remember waiting at the docks in Brisbane for my 1989 model R32 GT-R, it was one of the first boats to be bringing in the 15 year old imports, before they removed that method of importing. Wharfies broke the clutch though so I could only rev it in neutral, still a great feeling to be sitting in a car that had so much history, the VIN was in the 2000's so it was one of the first made, this was before skylines (GTS-T's) were bloody everwhere.

Some car magazines who reviewed the r35 have gotten its 0-100 times down to as low as 3.3 seconds. Also horsepower and weight aren't the only contributing factors for trying to understand acceleration times. You also have to consider, aerodynamics, torque, traction ect.

I think alot of you guys are forgetting the fact that the v8's at the time were lacking any good funding to compete with the turbo's. The R32GTR and Cosworth Sierra are extreme engineered cars. The v8's had just come out of the 80's where it was pretty much forbidden to produce high output cars like those of the 70's. They used outdated technology throughout the engine and drive-train. The v8's today are highly engineered cars capable of putting out 650 bhp, whilst still using 2v, pushrod 302's.

Without the boost restrictions the R32 GT-R could of possibly accelerated close to 300km/h down Conrod Straight. However during 1992 the GT-R's speed down Conrod was around 270km/h with the limitations and restrictions in place.

You are right one hundred percent. The reason the Japanese dont enter a motor is because: 1 they would whoop the push-rod contingent and 2 they arent alowed to enter becuase they wouldnt sink that low as to acctually put effort into making a Push-rod operated motor. Had the Japanese not been so technologically advanced they would be racing in the V8 supercars now.

@Krusade888 It is all about the capacity of the engine on boost. The V8s were 5L yet the Skyline was only 2.6L. The boost levels in the skyline meant that it was consuming roughly the same amount of volume as the engine twice it's size, but due to it's smaller capacity was able to rev out quicker & make more power per piston than it's competitors. Consider the volumemetric efficiency of each engine. 5L engine swallowing 5L of A/F mix and 2.6Lengine swallowing 5L of A/F mix yet reving higher.

My personal understanding of why the GT-R and other turbocharged vehicles were abolished is mainly due to the fact that they did not appeal to the majority of Australian motorsport fans. The majority of the ATTC Motorsport fans could not support various manufactures as most of the cars they produced were either to expensive or limited production.

I'm sorry but the gtr wasn't only making holden's look bad on the track. They were also making Ferrari's and Porsche's look bad on the road. What were you expecting from a 2 door Supercar vs a 4 door sedan. Also don't forget that they were also hammering BMW's, Sierra's and Toyota Supra's on the track as well.

This was, and always will be the fastest car on the mountain, nobody at the time! and still can't compete with the awesome power and handling of this vehicle, the tossers who run this race event will not let vehicle technology win any more. Even if they supercharged / turbocharged the Holdens back in the early 90's I seriously doubt they would of been able to catch the Ford Cosworths and Nissan Skyline GT-R's. The chassis of the Holdens was built on the premise of being a 4 door family saloon while the Cosworth and GT-R are purebred racing cars built for Group A and the performance market. Take into account the smaller variations like aerodynamics and you have a different class of vehicle that the Holdens simply could not match.

How many of those Sierras and GTRs were beaten by the rule brought in that year that required cars to be shut down when in the pits, immediately causing a heatsoak-related meltdown in the turbochargers? I think it was Tony Longhurst who said, "The rules only say we have to switch off, but not for how long", and he started switching off, but starting straight back up again, and he finished.

OZHCR32 is right but I would add that the guys who were the big names with the fan pulling power had nowhere to go when Group A ended. The team owners (Brock, Johnson, Seaton etc) of this world put together an entertainment package that would ensure they could make some money and control costs along with the support of the manufacturers. No way they would be selling millions of dollars of merchandise driving 2 litre BMW's.

@AYEJAY666 Im aware of the races they have won and what they have completed in but in the real world of cars they are more prone to failure then the piston motor with blowing seals and throwing flywheels. They do go very well for the size they are being only 1.3L but I guess that comes from having 3 firing points per rota and a light car. fuel usege in rotarys is very high when under high power/load and very high air flows in the rotarys and fuel is being matched to keep the correct A/F ratio

@john13200242 and @blastermitch Importing I did it myself. I sorted customs, quarantine, and the air con (old gas is illegal). I speak enough Japanese to get it to port, transfer $20k without seeing the car, that was the biggest risk. I owned my GTR for 4 years, HKS 2530's @ 1.5 bar, 310awkw or 415awhp, it might of had a refresh or built head because I had no problems, remember older car will have problems. My GTR cost about 26k landed, 35,000 was the market value before the 15 year old rule.

Fans couldn't support the GT-R because barely 500 of them made it to this country, Fans couldn't support the BMW M3 as it was just too expensive, Fans couldn't support the Sierra RS500 because it was viable to drive as a daily driver, it was a beast in a rally cars shell.
