There are two styles outlined:
The short one- used in a home theatre
The 16” tall one used for staging.
I suggest 3/4” birch plywood. It has few to no voids and is quite nice to work with.
If you make the riser taller than 16”, I would make the uprights wider- perhaps 4” wide not 3.5” wide.
Beyond that I would hesitate to arm-chair carpenter as I am not there for the assembly and use of the staging.
