Fun fact: The doorbell happens at the exact half point of the movie, making the movie literally half comedy - half horror.

Right? It's so ominous sounding. And I remember them using the doorbell sound in the trailer to shift the tone of the trailer. So when the doorbell rang in the film, I felt a chill crawl up my spine because I knew things were about to get weird.

Fun fact: this film is broken into two acts instead of the traditional three. The point it switches is when the doorbell rings…which is EXACTLY at the midpoint of the script. Bong is a master.

I dont think this is right... The movie actually fits the 3 act structure perfectly imo... 1st act creating the world - Ends with the scene when the housekeeper is leaving the house with her suitcase cause she got pushed out by the new family. 2nd act - problems arise - starts with the new family taking over and the rich family leaves for the camping trip. It ends when the poor family leave the rich house and find their house flooded and the son is holding onto the rock in the gym... 3rd act - wrapping everything up - Starts as the rich family invites everyone to the party and the party.

the director said that he thought the movie is a "tragedy" and that the son would have to work like 400 or 500 years to be able to buy the house. As for the part where they coach the father to kick out the housekeeper, I read that in Korea that part had an extra layer of comedy because the father is played by a very experienced actor, while the son is a new one, so its not "the son coaching the father on how to act" but also "the new actor coaching the veteran on how to act", this film has double meanings like this all over the place

one metaphor that i loved from this movie was the "smell". Poverty is not something that people can help. They cannot just get rich instantly like some people think. It stays, sometimes through generations. Sometimes you can't wash away a smell, because that's the smell you were born with. You're family smelled like that, your house smelled like that. You can't escape it.

Also when we see Mr. Park's body in the dirt towards the end, you see a fly landing on it. Nice touch to show that no matter how rich or poor is someone, we all end up in the same place and even nature can't tell the difference. Brilliant.

Also that poverty keeps you poor. Poverty is expensive. If you smell bad because you are poor, you can't get a job if your boss can't stand the smell. The main take away I took from the smell is that Mr. Park can't stand their mere presence around him.

I kind of rationalized the mom being so... "sweet" because she's always been in a position where she never had to worry about what their family goes through. All of her needs and wants have always been met, all of her questions, answered. There are actually a lot of accounts of people, I'm thinking of Reddit stories in particular, where rich, pampered kids didn't have the first idea about what actually being an adult entailed. Edit: I'm using "sweet" because Nat replaced "gullible" with it haha.

Also the wealthy mom, and dad, don't see their help as people. They fired the original housekeeper even though she'd been there before them without even talking to her. Same thing with the driver. They're rich enough to be "nice" but not actually kind

It's what the poor mother says "They aren't rich because they're nice, they're nice because they're rich". The rich family has the luxury to be, or at least act, sympathetic. Why the poor family has to be ruthless and "evil" to survive, because it's a dog world for the lower class.

The portrayal of economic classes in this movie and commentary on them through observations of class behavior takes the already brilliant movie to a whole other level. In Korea, class and status is a huge deal, and this film goes hard into tearing it down from opposite sides of the wealth scale.

I love that the families in this movie aren't 100% good, neither 100% evil. They are just people. They have flaws, product of their enviroment and way to live. Just like human beings.

The motif of the stairs, the ascension up to higher class and the descension down to poverty, is so powerful and prevalent in this movie that it becomes almost overwhelming. Especially if you were always a lower class person this movie makes you feel that canyon of difference you'll probably never cross to make it over to higher class, all because of how you were born.

Bong Joon-Ho, the director, was reportedly surprised by how well the film was received overseas. He had assumed that his depiction of class relations hinged on the peculiarities of those relations within South Korea. As it turns out, it rings true just about everywhere.

The stone representing the false hope of getting fortune (due to it being fake) The stairs representing the rise and fall in social class The doorbell ringing at exactly half point in the script Rich people living in ignorance while poor people are literally fighting one another to survive/ make it to a higher status The daughter being the only one being able to climb the latter, hence her sitting on the couch instead of the floor. The ending being Min’s plan, but us knowing it’ll never work out bc “plans never work” This movie is just ✨chef’s kiss✨

Yeah. And let’s not forget the lines between the two families. Some you can see, and some are subtle. And the two families reaction to the storm. What’s funny is that (and I could be wrong.) is that I think the rock floating wasn’t suppose to happen. It just happened to be a happy accident.

Also the end credit song is named "564 years" which is how many years it would take him to buy the house as a normal worker. Means it's almost impossible for him to buy that house.

the easter eggs in this movie are also insane. like how the rock is fake (since rocks can’t float) meaning that you cannot rely on lucky charms to climb the social ladder. there’s only one way and that’s what kevin imagined at the end except he knows that’ll never happen since he has a bit of a criminal record and no way of climbing that ladder (also means that his dad is stuck down there forever). another metaphor for how the poor is fed with the “work hard and you’ll get rich/successful” dream but can never achieve that dream, no matter how hard they work.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the name of the film. Every character is their own type of “parasite”. That alone is a masterstroke of character creation. It’s also a rebuttal of judging other people before you have a chance to walk in their shoes. The entire film is genius.

This movie can be something of a litmus test for people’s experience with class struggle too. I don’t necessarily think that people who sympathize with the Parks to the exclusion of the Kim family are bad people, but it definitely tells me that they’ve never been anywhere close to the financial position of the Kims. It’s crazy how many class struggle, “eat the rich” movies came out in 2019 only for the wealth disparity to amplify throughout the pandemic. All these people who had it hard in lockdown got kinda myopic toward all the people who are forced to serve them doing essential labor or die due to poverty. I did health checks and resource coordination for unhoused folks in my area at the beginning of the pandemic and people would be doing their daily walks right through the middle of encampments that are trying to obey shelter-in-place directives. Parasite gets more and more relevant as the pandemic continues.

It took me until another watching a second time but the point where he finds the rock floating in the water had me thinking. The rock that so symbolised wealth and prosperity for him just floated to the top. It can’t be a real rock of that size, it has to be fake too which means all that it symbolises is fake too. I need to watch this movie so many more times I think

Yes that’s also why he survives two blows to the skull, because it’s a hollow fake rock. And the first scene in his “dream sequence” at the end of the movie is him placing the rock into a river and it doesn’t float… it sinks. Only in his dreams is the rock, and what it signifies, actually “real”...

What makes Parasite so amazing, quite apart from its brilliant cinematography and acting, is that though about money, this film does not trace differences between the rich and poor only through the prism of money. Instead, the director presents to us the everyday realities of inequalities through bodily senses, particularly of smell and sight. Even on that ram-don scene, The combination of the words “ramen” and “udon” was used to represent the hard-to-translate Korean dish, jjapaguri. Jjapaguri, also known as chapaguri, is the combination of two instant noodle packs by the brands Chapagetti and Neoguri. As the Chapagetti noodles are ramen-type and the Neoguri are udon-type noodles, the name ram-don was an easy combination of the two. However, Jjapaguri, a common comfort food in South Korea is not normally topped with steak, let alone an expensive sirloin cut - further demonstrating the class divide shown throughout Parasite.

This movie is a masterpiece top to bottom. You have to watch it multiple times to catch all the metaphors, including how the camera frames/moves, the use of lines to separate the rich and poor, and the dialogue interweave with all the above. Every element and the timing of each presented in the movie is intentional. Don't forget the fact this film also switches genres while still telling an engaging story with very well-written characters that also serves as a social commentary on capitalism. That's a 💩 ton of hoops writer-director-producer Bong Joon-Ho had to go through and he didn't make any mistakes doing it. This isn't an adaptation or a remake either. It's simply way better than most Best Picture Oscar winners in the last two decades. Easily.

@@doro626 HBO is doing an American version and Bong Joon-Ho is producing it. I agree remakes of international films can be frustrating it's not always inherently bad. The Departed is acclaimed but is a remake of Infernal Affairs, a Hong Kong film.

I taught English in Seoul. This is a somewhat accurate depiction of the competitiveness and occasional skullduggery. I lost work because I refused to say I was American, their preferred accent. My friends also not American lived that lie. Although we all made good travelling money. This is an anti Capitalism film emphasising the massive wealth divide in the country.

Incredible performances from everyone, amazing cinematography and direction, absolutely deserved every award it got. Even my dad stayed up til 2 am watching it with me one time, which is impressive for a fully subtitled movie

One of Bong Joon Ho’s best. I recommend looking into the socioeconomic analyses of the film, it’s really an interrogation of the systems of wealth inequality that position the few at the top of the pyramid while those at bottom fight one another in a vain pursuit to get to the top. Their ignorance of the oppressed is symbolized by the reoccurring motifs of native american aesthetics bought from the US. An important note for the ending, the son buying the house was a complete fantasy. Bong Joon Ho stated that even with the highest of middle class salaries it would take over a hundred years to earn the money to buy that house.

Parasite is Bong Joon-Ho's masterpiece but my personal favorite of his work is Memories of Murder from 2003. The Host and Snowpiercer are also great.

This movie can be summed up in one word. "Craftsmanship". This movie is like a fine, handmade, swiss watch wound tight! It's beautiful, perfectly written, no gaps or holes in the story telling, all the story pieces just fall into place. Absolutely perfection.

The song during the fight between the family and the housekeeper is an Italian song which was extremely popular during the 60s. The director met the singer (who is still a popular person in Italy) at the last Venice Film Festival.

I did a university essay on this film and I have to say it's one of my favourites. The comparison of the architecture of the house, and the topology of the city they live in is so interesting! That the "lower" you get physically, the poorer you are within the little microcosm of the house.

Also directed and written by Bong Joon Ho are The Host (also staaring Kang-ho Song) and Snowpeircer, either one is worth a look (warning though the first is a monster movie).

14:29 She compared the dad to a cockroach. And then they hide like cockroaches when Park family comes home. Like how cockroaches scurry under furniture when you turn on the light. The movie hits you completely differently when you watch it second time.

This is an utterly fantastic film. I've seen it four times now and every viewing provides new insight, making the film even more of a masterpiece. I was so excited to see you watch this. The Best Picture winners lately haven't really felt like they should be Best Picture winners but this felt unlike any other film I've ever seen, and that's very rare these days. I'm glad you liked it!

This movie was one that left my head full upon living the cinema, like I was processing everything that had happened, all the emotions, no wasted moments, and mixing genres. The cinematography was definitely one of the highlights of the film. An extraordinary film, one that merits rewatching but you don't feel like you ever finish digesting what it's showing you.

The film is so well made on so many levels. At 10:50, Mr Kim is literally leading Mrs. Park just as he is with their scheming plan. Also, at 11:19, he's literally taking her on a ride as he's figuratively taking her on a ride.

What I love about Boon Joon Ho's movies are he seamlessly weaves political commentary and entertainment into his films. On one hand you can simply enjoy his films as simple entertainment, but if you want to dig deep and find meaning, its there.

Even more than all the metaphors or the topic of “parasites” and who were the parasites I just love the cinematics. The lighting, the wide shots, the slow pans. I love everything Bong Joon Ho does but I think this movie is a true master piece. And it just lingers in your mind. I just remember watching and thinking about it for weeks and then rewatching it multiple times because it’s so weird and beautiful and yeah, kind of fucked up, but just that right amount of humor. I’m so glad you went into it pretty blind! That’s the best way and the most fun to see reactions to. Because you get to see people’s reactions when the genre suddenly seems to shift

I saw this in theaters 3 times. Such an amazing, on the pulse film. I feel it perfectly summarizes the dichotomy of classes as well as the juxtapositions between families as well. You could deep dive this for hours. Everything was done on a master level and this film deserves every single award and accolade it got.

Pretty much everything Bong Joon Ho has done is amazing, so definitely check any of his movies out. Oldboy by Park Chan Wook too, if you have the stomach.

Bong Joon-Ho is an incredible director. I highly recommend checking out some of his other movies, especially Memories of Murder and Mother. Snowpiercer and The Host are worth a watch too

Also very impressed you picked up on a lot of the deeper metaphors, like the wealthy living literally higher up in the city, and the Park family getting washed back down during the storm. I like how they're so much symbolism. Like how you never see the rich family walk down the stairs always going up. Or the poor family starts with a place that's half underground and at the end the dad is totally underground.

the amazing thing about this movie is that there is no set protagonist or antagonist. everyone is a parasite in some way. it makes you feel empathetic for criminals and leeches but you also feel bad for the park family, but then, the park family are judgmental and oblivious to anyone underneath them. that oscar was beyond deserved. bong joon ho is a master director and this film was written so brilliantly. fun fact: that doorbell in the middle happens at the exact halfway point in the script. loved the reaction!

eeeeeh, i like her reactions to movies because she has knowledge in filmmaking. its like watching red letter media stuff, theyre interesting to watch because they know films and the process of making them. nat im assuming doesnt take the same approach with games because its not something she specializes in. she may enjoy them in her free time but an in depth knowledge like with movies? and last of us? come on. how many times do you need to see people play that overrated series and gush every time about about its "in depth story?"

i love the cinematography and the amount of stairs this movie that symbolizes the ups and downs of the main family's lives, and like when they run out of the house to their own they go so down with the many stairs to the flooded apartment of theirs its so amazingly symbolized, and when the main character goes to the house for the first time it's filmed how he goes up and up and up yeaa :D

Amazing movie! That scene in the rain going down to their apartment was perhaps my favorite scene from a movie that year. So good. Parasite and Jo Jo Rabbit were my two favorite movies that year.
