For removing rust I would recommend using a corded power drill and wire brush wheels . I got a thorough clean metal surface . But I had a lot more rust . Use small and large head and various wheel type ones . Then I washed with water based Turps , hosed it down and when dry used Rustoleum Primer in a spray can . You were lucky your bolts could undo . Mine were severly corroded and had to use a Grinder

Love how you just tell what you are doing, no dramatic embellishment! Nice job, the color is almost always lighter on blond wood.

The finished build looks great - aren't you worried that you stained and finished the wood - but the wood where you drilled the holes is not finished and the weather will get to the wood and cause rot?
@Wengelsworkshop

thanks for checking out the video Rodney. The bench is now on a back porch instead of directly in the weather. i also put a bit of urethane in the screw holes to help protect just in case.

Great video! I’m getting ready to restore one just like this. You explained everything very well and the music was calm. Some videos have music that is so distracting.

suggest using galvanized bolts. is pine strong enough? I've used Douglas fir.
@Wengelsworkshop

i believe pine is fine as long as the boards are wide enough

Hey Dan, he used a countersink drill bit first which not only gives you a pilot hole but bores out the width for the head of whatever hardware you choose to sit at your desired depth. He then finished It up with a twist bit at the same diameter of his hardware.

I have sort of the same bench, just a different back (picked up the other day). The problem is the wood wasn’t there anymore so I have no template. Do you by chance know the dimensions of the slats for the bench and back pieces? The bench looks terrific!

@carlmax46

depends on the wood used. traditionally Douglas fir was used; lasted for decades. most failures at bolt holes. so treat the drilled holes and use galvanized bolts.
