That sounds about right from what I've read on the car audio pages a good 3-inch coil sub will take 3-4k rms clean once you start pushing them above that it will work, but it's like how long will it still keep pounding with that much power

@@madscientist6869 possibly double RMS and clipping (regardless of what the clip indicator on the amplifier showed). Slight clip at double RMS or playing an octave below tuning. So many factors and variables about a subwoofer blowing. 90% of the time it's user error. Manufacture defects absolutely happen. But I build for a living and I've never blown a z-sub and I personally run zv5 drivers. Personally put 20,000 clamped to 4 18s. Never a blown sub.

@@________GHOST________ Excursion really doesn't mean much in a ported enclosure. Besides a properly designed driver with a 4" coil can have just as much Xmax/Xmech as a 3" coil driver.

@@________GHOST________ excursion isn't everything. Motor force, piston & suspension durability, and power handling, in the proper enclosure, is what nets good results. Subs hardly move at tuning frequency, thier ability to compress air with great force becomes the main factor when trying to get dumb loud. Large excursion drivers compromise peak motor strength for linearity. It's a direct compromise.

Might also have to do with the enclosure was not made for this sub. He always uses same box and puts different subs in it. Not really really showing a subs potential in a box not built to spec and tuned to the fs of the sub

We're not going to lie to each other, he always took the same shitty box to do his tests while doing his showoff and the only thing he showed us today is the OVER X-MAXX that his sound box will force his subwoofer to do...very brilliant

This is interesting, my zv6 is still working just fine but stinks pretty bad. I have pics of the coil and she definitely got hot. Had no idea about this flat coil break in shit.

Those are comp subs who runs 4” coils and 10k daily? I would love to but who has the money to do it shit would cost $10k easy unless you do a bunch of cheap Brazilian crap!! Exactly. If the coil comes unwound like that after a week with no clipping, it was just a defective coil. Sundown needs to step up and take care of a good customer that spends good money with them, and even reps their products on KZfaq to a few hundred thousand people.

Why does everybody think JP (the owner of D4S) own sundown. 🤣🤦‍♂️ Jacob Fuller owns sundown. Where he bought the sub has nothing to do with how his outcome would of been. Sundown builds this sub in house, then put to a test to make sure the sub has no weird noises. Then is boxed up and shipped out to disrupters such as D4S & audio apex. Audio apex only builds refurbished subs. But, you can get ahold of audio apex and they will hook you up for a recone for it, as they share the same warehouse as sundown. Since he put 8k watts on it, I highly doubt sundown will warranty it.

He broke it in for like a week. He did it right. That coil was just a defective coil. It happens to the best of them. Every one in a thousand is gonna be defective for whatever reason. Sundown needs to take care of the man and send him a new sub. He spent $1000 on that thing and it lasted a week.

Pretty sure sundown builds their subs in factory.. in america, and the ohm load doesnt really matter. Just the amount of power going thru it, probably too rough on a new sub

@@blownvoicecoil124 put money on it the deaf bonce db3512 will definitely perform far better as far as longevity goes vs the zv5. And no you can't compare the zv6 12 and the db3012 as I can almost buy 2 db3012 for the price of a zv6. Just the honest truth that that is not a 900 dollar sub price to performance wise. I had a zv5 15 on around 3k clamped that I didn't get 8 months out of it. The xv2 is a better sub than the zv5 performance and efficiency wise and that came from people who ran real world t\s specs after break in on every sub sundown had at the time. But they needed a little more power handling so they didn't go without sundown, they had 2 massive audio hippo 15s with custom cone and coil and were doing a 160 with 2 15s on under 3 20k in a huge folded horn paraflex enclosure from 28hz to like 70hz. They're good subs but sundown definitely charges far too much for the most reconed subs every year. When I started seeing post after post about their extremely overpriced salt series amps blowing up and the trash quality sfb amps that 1 out of 5 last more then a week I knew I would nev run sundown again. My soundqubed hdc3.1 15 is over 5 years old and still going in a friend's car and I abused it 10 times as bad in the 4 years I ran it. I learned sundown is just a name. I call them subdown because I constantly see people having to recone them. And please don't think I like skar, I wouldn't run anything from skar even if it was free. Complete junk company and you can get the skar evl to on alibaba for like 160 shipped as a sample sub same as the Orion hcca

My thoughts too, this is why most people will use them in very large enclosures so then you don't have to drive so much power into them to get them cranking plus the sound quality will be night & day difference.

you cant hurt it from the box being that size it will actually help it take more power... but not that much 8k is too much

@@dead6last Correct, most people don't understand that. With a box to big you will eat up spiders & glue joins before a coil, box to small you get a bit to confident with the volume & start to kill the coil.

Sundown is a bit overrated and overpriced in my opinion. Especially the Salt amps. Very overpriced. You can definitely get equipment that is just as good for less money.

The most reconed sub on my 3k plus friends list has been the zv5 series. I owned a zv5 and didn't get 8 months out of it on around 3k clamped. Taught me a great lesson though, sundown is just a name. I'm running a black brick heavy hitter budget sub right now and so far price to performance wise it blows my zv5 out the water. But my soundqubed hdc3.1 that's 5 years old and still going outperformed my zv5 just by lasting 4 years when I paid 50 bucks for it brand new because of all the ones getting reconed back then. Traded a kicker cvx for that soundqubed hdc3.1. If soundqubed ever gets stock again I'd get an hdx4.1 for sure

Yeah for sure! I'm supposed to be picking up a lightly used level 4 DC Audio 12" in a nice custom box for like $160'ish bucks. I don't know too much about this brand but it looks like it's a well built sub and the box looks great compared to anything prefab that's for sure! Figuring this should be a great start to the new system I'll be putting together in this first generation Grand Cherokee I just got! Hopefully this level 4 is decent, especially compared to the Audiopulse Axis quad 1 ohm voice coil 12 in sub I have been running for year's now, and it's been a beast that's taken hour plus commutes to and from work cranking the entire drive!

@@BabyCharlotteschannel the DC lvl 4 is the sub that I started with. It's a great sub! If you're a beginner, throw at least 1000 watts rms. They're rated about 1400 but can take about 2500

But thanks, I figure for the price the custom box with what sounds like a decent sub will be a good start for this latest system I'm gonna put together! I forget what Big D got from this Orion xtr 2500, bit it puts out more than rated, and was running it at .8 ohms for the last year with my baby, an old Audiopulse Axis quad 1 ohm voice coil 12 in sub along with a TC Sounds 15" Tropo and it was really a hard hitting, great sounding system for every type of music I listened to. If I'm lucky enough to get the Audiopulse Axis 12" sub back from my buddy I sold the Xterra to with most of the system I'd definitely be building a quality custom box for, cause that was in a crappy prefab though the 15" Tropo is in a nice low tuned box that really sounded great. Parker really needs to step up to 4 inch coil subs with the power he has available and a box with more port area to test huge subs like this. I do definitely understand that 4 inch coil subs are expensive though, and not everyone has multiple 8k amps and lithium to run their system. That King City Customs box is a nice box, but its meant for smaller subs like the XFL and subs in the 1000-1500 watt range with less excursion. When you move up to the Xv3 and ZV6 class of subs with crazy excursion, it starts to call for a different box with more port area and different specs. Parker needs more than just that one box so he can better match the kind of sub he's testing to the box he's using. I don't know if he still has that other 2.7 cube box with the aero port or not, but he should think about building a couple different boxes for testing these different subs with different box requirements. The one he has is a good mid range sub box, but boxes aren't a one size fits all thing as we all know.

@@HashDogg06 how much car audio experience do you have? I’ve been competing since 1998 and I’ve been to world finals 11 times. I’ve seen a zv5 take 7000 watts over and over for 2 years. And a zv6 is suppose to be a step up. I had 3 zv4 15’s prolly 3 years ago with 7900.1 wired at .8 on each sub. I was putting 6000 watts a sub. Beat the hell out them constantly. Never had a problem or failure. Do you really think a 91lb sub with that much motor force can’t handle more than 2500 watts? Drives me crazy when people get on here and know nothing but a manufacturers spec. Go to 20-30 shows a year for 23 years. Work on car audio almost daily for 26 years. Once you have some experience then come up with an intelligent comment.

4k is definitely all you need but this wasn't because of the size of the amp, it was either enclosure wrong size, amp clipping, or defective sub-I've had a scv7500 per sub at .5 ohm and below using ZV5s, ZV6s, and NSV4s and never had this happen.

@@madscientist6869 He had it wired down to .5 ohm on a bass 8k... it has a 3" 8 layer coil. It doesn't matter what "brand" it is, that is abuse. Contrary to what you believe, The Zv6 will handle more abuse than most subs in its class. Reconing isn't a big deal at all and $900 doesn't mean it's invincible.
