This guy is so darn right! I bought a Stingray '02 some years ago without taking it to the water,since the price was right(newbie...). Now, it turns out I actually was lucky, only changed the risers/manifolds to be on the safe side and the fluids. But in hindsight , I'd NEVER do that again or recommend anyone do it , I realize it was just...luck . So many things can fail on a marine engine, everything BOAT costs $$$! I truly feel sorry for your friend Scott, and hope he enjoys his boat now it's back on the lake

It definitely sucks. I've had this happen to me with a truck purchase one time. It had a blown head gasket. The good thing is once you do get it fixed, and everything else is in great shape, you'll have a great boat on your hands for years and years. But man, what a heart sinking feeling it is to find a problem this huge with a huge purchase, makes you feel really dumb and taken advantage of.

soft wood / flooring, check the wood in the transom or have a professional check the wood, and check the wood on the underneath of the swim platform, outdrive oil condition, make sure she smoothly gets up to plane, no hesitation or skips. See if the seller has any prior owner information and or service information. How many hours on the engine, which engine does it have.

Wow a hole in the piston is a very rare thing even weird for that to happen must have put wrong spark plug in it with to long of a shank or dropped something in the spark plug hole like a nut or bolt or used to high of octane that's crazy. Even running on the hose a person should have heard that right off that had to have a really bad miss.

Great advise... never buy a used boat especially sterndrive on the hose! Always test on the water. Like you said , the bellows or shift cable boot could have a whole , that you cannot see till you have it on the water, then water starts running in from the back of the motor.. plus until you have it on a load and shift in gear ,you cannot hear a dry or bad gimble bearing, lower unit sounds, clutch dog, bearings gears... u joints especially when turning under power... people if you're not knowledgeable about the mechanics of boats , engines and stern drives,, pay someone who is....

Depends on the price point. If you're buying a 20 year old Bayliner for $7k, most sellers are not going to want to deal with the hassle of water trial. They'll move on to the next buyer. What this is means is that you can pass up a lot of decent boats for $7k. At a certain (much higher) price, a seller will anticipate a water trial and will be open to doing one, but the delta between the two prices can buy you a lot of repairs. Personally, I just assume that an older I/O will need bellows, gimbal bearing, and maybe exhaust manifold/risers unless the seller has records that these were addressed recently. If the price is fair considering these potential maintenance items, I'll buy without a surveyor or water trial. Unless you have deep pockets, you shouldn't be buying an I/O unless you're reasonably mechanically inclined. There is just too much to go wrong with an I/O that even a brief water trial or pre-purchase survey won't find.

Was the filter that is on the carb where the fuel line attaches to changed ? Also you should have a catch bowl / water separator on the mechanical fuel pump, have you checked that ? Could also be a fuel line from the tank to the engine breaking down, or trash that is not being picked up in the tank but the filter screen on the pick up tube.

call your local bank or credit union and ask who is a good marine surveyor. best money you will ever spend is on a survey! I almost got burnt on a $72k boat. the entire foredeck was all rotted below the bow rail. i would of never noticed. looked further and the stringer was quite wet. whole boat was junk but hell, i didn't know wtf i was looking at.
@James-eq8fs
@James-eq8fs 7 жыл бұрын
A marine surveyor is a good idea but many of them do not check out mechanical items like engines as hard as that is to believe. Now it's not that the surveyor is lazy or corrupt, they just do not inspect engines even though you would think that is one of the most important items that should be checked. If you are hiring a surveyor interview them and find out what they will be inspecting.
@barackobama367
@barackobama367 7 жыл бұрын
checked a few and they all do according to what they have listed. also it is a visual inspection. they cannot inspect what they cant see or access easily like bellows if the boat is out of water.
@James-eq8fs
@James-eq8fs 7 жыл бұрын
Like I said before a marine surveyor is a good idea and a good surveyor does a great job at checking boats for structural issues. While no one can be expected to see through metal or find drive hardware problems if the boat is in the water not all, but many of the surveyors I have observed over 20 years as a boat mechanic don’t check much in the way of engine mechanical items. Now different surveyors are going to do different things all I can do is speak to what I have seen. Of those surveyors most don’t even start the main engines let alone take the boat for a ride. My point is known what they are checking. If they look at an engine block to inspect for cracks do to improper winterization that’s good, but if they do not run that same engine and miss a rod knock that could be an expensive miss.
@barackobama367
@barackobama367 7 жыл бұрын
I'm in MI and though a sea trial is extra it is fairly common in my region. Typically lenders send out a surveyor to see if what they are writing a loan on is worth the money as a loss prevention measure. typically there is no relationship with the customer in that instance. A private survey is of a different circumstance. i know that seawater vessel surveyors play by different rules. I see a lot of ocean boats come through repossession auctions and some actually have paperwork.
@James-eq8fs
@James-eq8fs 7 жыл бұрын
Barack Obama I hope your enjoying your free time now that you’re out of office and I thought you were from Chicago. Barack we are getting way off topic. The guy’s buddy in the video bought a boat from a private seller who only ran it on the hose. That seller may have told him a BS story of why the boat runs rough and then the guy bought the boat and now has to replace or rebuild the engine. To my original point have someone qualified whether it’s a surveyor or good mechanic check out the engine so you avoid this guy fate. And I personally believe a late test is a big part of that check. In this case even if the buyer would have gone on a lake test by himself with the seller he would have seen this thing needed more than a tune-up. I am also from MI and never once post that a marine survey is a bad thing in fact I encouraged people to get a survey just make sure the engine gets checked. It seems like you may also work in the industry but it doesn’t help anyone for us to debate the nuances of a marine survey. Like you said there are different types of surveys done a buyer needs to know what was checked. If someone just says the bank did a survey it’s all good but does not know what was checked they could be stuck with a problem. Many boats cost thousands of dollars spend a few hundred and get it properly checked out.

@strikeforcek9149

TechOut - I can answer this with experience: Last year I was selling a fair/good condition 1987 Bayliner Liberty 2150 for $3500. I had rebuilt the engine, so it was welllll worth the asking price. It was a solid runner, drove nice as could be, and was mechanically 10/10 and cosmetically 8/10. A guy comes to look at buying it, and asks if he can pull the plugs to check the engine and check out the stringers and transom. I said "of course, be my guest", you know, thinking it was an easy sale because I knew how good of condition everything was in. I took a picture of his ID and his phone number down (in case he pulled any BS). Well, I hear his drills, tools, and him wrenching around. Then he gets done and says it looks pretty decent, and he then offers me $1900. So, I turn it down and thank him for looking anyways. He leaves, I put the mooring cover back on, and then I end up having another guy coming out about 2hrs later. This guy checks out the boat, wants to hear it start. I go to start it, and nothing... I lift the doghouse, and I'm mortified when I investigate the issue: 3 Spark Plugs are cracked off with the bottom half still in the heads!!! I then start REALLY investigating an looking around, and see in the bottom of the bay a dime sized hole drilled into the very bottom of the stringer, all the way through (there's no access to the other side to repair it either). He drilled 12 holes in random places all around the inside of the transom about halfway through the transom.... Needles to say, I'm LIVID at this point. So, I call the guy to tell him I mulled it over and talked to my wife, and she feels its best just to let it go for the offer he made ($1900). When he arrives, I have my wife secretly call the sheriff film inside, and the guy starts trying to haggle the price down to $1500 now.... During our haggling and my fake friendly BS'ing with the guy, the Sherrif shows up. The guy looks shaken up, and I instantly start letting the guy have it (at this point, he can't do anything to me). I explain to the sheriff exactly what happened, and luckily I had a video of me running the engine on Facebook live right before the guy got there. The sheriff runs his nameand it turns out he didn't even have a drivers license! Lol. The guy starts denying that he did any checking on the boat and that he merely seen the broken plugs and offered the $1900. He started pajnting himself in s corner by trying talking too much, and he accidentally let some things slip that we wouldn't have known otherwise unless he was working on the boat like he denied doing. So, the sheriff gave him an ultimatum once be realized the guy flatout did it: he told the guy to pay up the $1900 he originally offered to me, for myself to get the repairs done, OR he was going to be taking him in for driving without a license, vandalism, and "theft by deception"... The guy quickly rips the cash out of his pocket and hands it to me. IMMEDIATELY something feels off. I hand the deputy money and voice my concern. The guy then IMMEDIATELY takes off running trying to get away! It turns out the money was counterfeit/fake as hell!!! So, the guy gets arrested for counterfeit, obstruction, fraud, vandalism, and attempted theft, lol... The problem though? I'm still out all the damage and have to pay to fix it all still, AND can't sell my boat until it's don'e! The case is still going on and the trial date is set for the 2nd week in Ocyober. But, even when he's found guilty and does his time and had restitution applied to pay me, I'm still out the money if he doesn't decide to pay up anyways... Judging by how big of a scumbag he is, itll be years before I see any of that money. Sooooo, why don't you let people start wrenching on your boat before buying it??? This is why...

But if you do not want to spend that money at BARE MINIMUM take the boat out on the water and run it wide open for at least 10 to 15 minutes that will NOT tell you everything but can show a lot. Ive never bought a boat before, nor know much about them mechanically, but Im looking at a 90's Mastercraft with 205 hours thats being sold at a local shop which sells boating stuff and new Supreme brand boats(they also service). I asked if I could take the boat out on the water and he told me he could run it on the hose. I said I wanted to take it on the water and he said, "Well its got some carb issues at higher rpms from sitting and older fuel, but if youre really interested, & put down a deposit, and sign a purchase agreement, we can take it out". Soooo whats the real scoop here guys? And, if he gave me the opportunity to pay for the boat w/a credit card, would I have a little more protection(recourse) down the road? Thanks!

Yeah I would look elsewhere. I mean a simple carb rebuild and new fuel would correct a "its been sitting" issue. It could many more problems than just something simple. Don't let them try and lock you into an agreement you can't get out of. Sounds shady.

Some "mechanics" are less than intelligent. The ones who said it needed a carb overhaul need to find a different line of work. It won't work on modern engines with large upper plenum intakes (because they essentially act like a vacuum canister with plenty of reserve vacuum) but on most boats and older carbureted vehicles, a vacuum gauge would have shown that decisively and much faster than a compression test. If the needle on the vacuum gauge jumps rhythmically with the misfire, it's a mechanical problem (hole in piston, broke ring, bad valve, broken valve spring, flat cam, etc.). Also, I can assure you, if you have a major mechanical problem like a hole in a piston or bad valve/flat cam, you can disconnect the coil and just crank it over and you will hear the engine speed up every time the cylinder with weak/zero compression is on the compression stroke. It makes my blood boil that some people in this profession are dumb enough to call something that simple to diagnose a carb problem.

I could not agree with you more. 150% more. The engine is getting changed out as we speak with a nice reman long block from a reputable company in Charlotte, NC. Hopefully in a week or two he will be back in the water.

I am going through a very similar situation right now. However, I got a good deal on a 95 boat and trailer, knowing the engine needed rebuilt. The mechanic screwed me on the rebuild. Took it out after rebuild and the engine over heated. Mechanic wont make good on his warranty. So, Im out around $3000 with a non running boat.

That is horrible. His reman block has been working great. So this is one of the reasons going reman vs rebuild is so much better.

Why in the world did boat manufacturers slap 1980s Chevy Astro van engines in they’re boats? These engines are always failing, cheap Chevy junk

4.3 if it's a GM motor it's the best motor on the market. The Bellows are the Bellows they got to get changed every 5 to 10 years because it's Rubber and it dry rot spray with silicone before you put it in the water and that'll help you out an awful lot. I have a 92 Sea Ray 21 ft boat and it is fantastic I was original owner if you take care of it I change the Bellows one time last year cost me $800 I had a guy do it for me. 4.3 GM Motors would I have in my boat the same one that you have in yours and it runs fantastic it is the best boat motor on the market
