Best motor maintenance video I've seen on KZfaq. And I've watched dozens. * All bolts and clips highlighted and sizes given * Each part shown from all angles after removal, for easy ID * Every step explained ...and avoiding the thing that drives me insane on most such videos.... * You actually keep the camera fixed in position and not continuously swinging about like a drunken sailor. I don't even own a Dacia but I enjoyed watching this. Great stuff!

Hi Mark, this is really a very nice video, all very clear and easy to follow. I'll soon be replacing my Logan (D4F) for a Duster (TCe90) so I won't do any more work on my Logan, but really, without an informative video like this I would never mess with the timing belt. I hope you'll work on a TCe90 engine in the future as apparently quite a few people complain about premature failing of the timing chain (the tensioner fails). Would be very helpful for a lot op people! Many thanks for your videos and have a nice day!

Hi, I've recently changed the belt on one of these - I checked that the timing marks lined up after spinning the engine by hand. When starting the engine, nearly immediately the engine management light flashes and there's a severe misfire. Is it possible I'm out by one tooth? The compression test came back fine so nothing's been damaged, but would being one tooth out cause such a severe misfire?
@CoatsandGaiters
@CoatsandGaiters 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear this, one of the biggest fears for us non qualified mechanics and timing belts. Did you follow me video exactly as I had a slight oddity of the manufacturers mark not aligning by one tooth. Thankfully I had marked the old belt before removing. I'd have a relaxed re look at it and watch my video in case you missed something. Check the crank isn't 180° out of sync. I did that once on my old Allegro when I was a kid and I couldn't figure it out what I had done wrong. Just remember the crank has to rotate twice for each revolution of the camshafts.
@HCrawf
@HCrawf 3 жыл бұрын
Coats and Gaiters thanks for the pointer - admittedly I watched this video as I was struggling with the fiddly tensioner and didn’t see the part about the marks not aligning! I will re-watch and get back to you. What makes things more complex is that I removed the engine + ‘box for a clutch replacement so it makes it harder to narrow down the misfire cause. This is one of a few things to check as I retrace my steps. Thanks again
@HCrawf
@HCrawf 3 жыл бұрын
Hi again, just to update you. I checked my work on the timing belt/pump/tensioner assembly & it was installed and tensioned correctly. I reinstalled the timing belt and re-tensioned it anyway just to be sure. Unlike in your situation I was able to get the white marks on the belt to line up with the marks on the sprockets, and in fact it wouldn’t go on at all if I tried to install it the way you did with the crankshaft mark and the white line one tooth away from each other. My belt was made by Gates, not Dayco as in your example so perhaps that accounts for the difference? Not too sure. My actual issue was that an injector was faulty, and it was just pure coincidence that it failed post-timing belt/clutch change. I’ve replaced it and the engine now runs perfectly. Your advice about marking the old belt before removal is a great idea & something I will take forward in the future, so thank you👍

@@HCrawf sometimes its safer to do one job at a time or have a wife that points out the obvious. I think the Dacia is probably a nice balanced car to work on for the home mechanic. I now have the Nissan X Trail and from what I've seen online doing a clutch would be an utter nightmare. I really wouldn't want to do one. I try and mark or video everything as its so easy to slip up. In some ways making a video helps me as I have to make sure each step I understand fully before filming it. Normally I'd just get straight in there and make a silly mistake that costs me dearly.

Just be aware you can get an engine off ebay for under £500 with 70k miles on. I need one as well. Timing is just the same as in this video. Set the cams and the crank and put a new belt on. Timing belts can be a scary thought as you know you must get it totally right or risk engine damage so I always find I'm somewhat nervous as I know I cannot slip up at all. But saying that my video should give you an insight as to what tools etc you will need so really its down to your confidence. My outlook was I'd rather spend the money on decent tools even if the job cost the same as a garage in the end as I would have those tools for life and know if I messed up it was my fault. Just go slowly and ensure you note everything if you do decide to have ago. I would allow a couple of days to play safe if your unsure. It's certainly not a job to do under time pressure. Maybe get everything removed except the timing belt on day one and then the next day remove and replace the water pump etc.

@@kika6718 I think I just have a thing for collecting tools, I look for an excuse to try a new one.......now how sad does that sound lol. I agree with you watching over and over the video before you start as its a big job and the more you re watch the more you will feel like you know the job. I love KZfaq for this. It's helped me out or rather the kind people that upload have helped me out so much over the years. Before mending your car could be a challenge hoping the garage might tell you the answer but with KZfaq normally someone has the answer and has spread the word. Fantastic community. Thank you also for your kind words and taking the time to write them.

How much would you charge for this? Same vehicle

I couldn’t as I’m not a qualified mechanic. Garage probably would charge around £350 I’d guess.

just what i needed, you saved me a lot of money, hopefully, i have kangoo with the same engine and i decided to change the belt my self, not just because of the money, but i dont trust mechanics, engine should be washed with water before changing coolant and noone does that and so forth... thanx again

That's great news, so pleased it might save you some money. Seeing someone do it saves a lot of time in wondering as you can get straight to it.

@@CoatsandGaiters one question though, how much (in cm or inches) can the engine go up and down after taking off the engine mount thing, since i saw in a video (possibly even yours, i am not sure any more cause there are several yt tutorials) that a guy had faulty jack under the engine and every 10 minutes or so his engine would 'sink' down and then he needed to pump the jack again some, so obviously the engine has some up and down 'allowance' , so how much it is, because it would really help if i could move it some, cause the space in kangoo is really tight? also what happens if we over tight some bolts, say tensioner for example?

does anyone have experience with iridium spark plugs and this engine and it's variants (dacia sandero, logan, twingo, clio, modus, kangoo...)

There are offerings on the market from NGK and Denso. I went with NGK Laser Iridium ILKAR7A7 (91432) plugs for mine since they were locally available and the price was decent, but from what I heard the Denso plugs are the better choice. The thread dimensions are: 12mm diameter and 26.5mm length.

@@cristiannicolae6309 and have you noticed any change from 'standard' plugs? i changed my spark cables + NGK standard plugs in the meantime and now the engine purrs like a new one (130kkm)
