Hello and welcome to the largest video project I have created up to this point. A full analysis, breakdown, and critique of Destiny 2 The Red War.
This video contains spoilers for all of Destiny 2's campaigns, so unless you've experienced them or simply don't care, then you're good to go.
This project is the potential beginning of a series about each and every Destiny 2 campaign. From Curse of Osiris to Lightfall. Of course due to the length of this video it kinda gives a standard for how long my videos will be in the future when discussing these campaigns.
Normal content will also be coming out in between all the Destiny 2 videos for those who don't like or care about the game. My next video is one I'm particularly excited to cover.
As always, thank you for watching this video, I highly recommend you leave a like to tell me your thoughts. Maybe you agreed with my assessment, maybe you didn't, and I want to hear it. It also gives me more engagement so people are more likely to watch the video.

Hello everyone, first I wanna thank everyone who watched this video! This is by far by best performing video yet and it couldn't be done without all of you watching. Second, I want to thank everyone for all the kind words, it's really encouraging and I'm already seeing if I can feasibly release videos for the rest of the Destiny 2 story content. Third, I want to thank everyone who has provided criticism for my video. I can't be perfect but I try to be as close as I can to get there, and that couldn't be done without pointing out mistakes so I don't make them again. Anyways, once again, thank you everyone for watching and I hope to provide new content soon! NEW EDIT!!! I see a ton of people saying they're excited to see new stuff which is awesome! This video's gotten a ton of attention and I couldn't be more grateful, it honestly doesn't feel real. Anyway if anyone is expecting me to release a video in the next month or two it may be a while. I've seen a ton of people point out that I've missed lore that would've removed some of the criticism from my video, so I'm going to look harder at the lore, and make sure I don't make these mistakes! There's so much shit to look through so it'll take longer but I hope y'all can deal with that if it means a stronger video. Once ago thank you everyone for watching, and liking, and all the comments!

So no biggie as I'm sure there isn't much there in the lore anyway, However if you want more backstory on Ghaul you'd have to look into Calus and moreso Caiatl. Hope I spelled her right! Ghaul was a protege I believe and he was the direct mentor to Caiatl. I vaguely remember a origin story of him being rescued by Calus as a child for his hardiness or something? Caiatl learned as much as she could from Ghaul while still feeling novice compared to him. Season of the haunted recently touched on these aspects yet around the leviathan era it went deeper, it also portrayed Caiatl's mentor as mysterious, political, and far reaching in some sense. Quick question? Who wore the Bane mask first? Ghaul or Bane lmfao 🤣!?

Explaining why the satellites were down at the beginning: one of The Nine disabled them. In short, The Nine are only sentient because of life in Sol. One of the Nine went rogue and decided to bet it all on the Cabal Empire instead of Humanity, not knowing the cabal's plan was to destroy sol. The One was punished for this, having their influence on Sol severely weakened.

The one thing most people don’t know is that the speaker DOES get visons and can hear the traveler’s voice thanks to mask he wore, he just lied to mess with Ghaul
@embyveddii
@embyveddii Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I mentioned on a reddit post once how I was surprised how little we mention the speaker now since he was so important, and people were replying saying how he was pointless and basically a religious figure. But no, he was actually somewhat in ties with the traveler, and was very important
@broderickfoster2107
@broderickfoster2107 6 күн бұрын
To clarify, many people get the visions The Speaker gets, it’s just he made a mask which amplified them and made them a lot more clear for him to understand. So he wasn’t lying to Ghaul when he said “I never said it spoke to me” because it doesn’t. The Traveler essentially just talks to itself / the universe calling out and giving visions, it almost never directly speaks to an individual. The Speaker is simply tapping into it like a radio that’s constantly tuned into a news station and he relays that information to the city. HOWEVER he does have a bit of a power problem becoming a bit of a religious figure due to his connection with the traveler, when he speaks it’s the equivalent of The Traveler speaking and as such his opinions were given much more strength and he didn’t take too well to opposition *ahem Osiris* and as such many in the city don’t speak too highly of him

ghauls armor is actually genius by design and true to his character, if you read the description of legend of acrius exotic shotgun it's basically a story about Icarus from Greek mythology, ghaul idolized acrius which in turn is what he based his armors design off of because he himself strived to do what acrius in his tale did.

The Red War is the definition of "wasted potential". Like all you do is traverse the old tower, go to a small new area, and you have a cutscene and your already on the main ship. Like it would've been SO COOL if you know, TRAVEL THROUGH THE LAST CITY!!! Defending fellow Guardians, saving citizens, etc you know WHAT A GUARDIAN IS!!! This whole motto of D2 was "what does it mean to be a guardian?" and they THROW IT AWAY 10 minutes later...

19:07 LOL 1. Felwinter wasn't evil, he was apart of the Iron Lords. He broke the rule they had of perma-killing other Risen though. He was actually an Exo body of Rasputin that was resurrected as a Risen (before they were called Guardians). 2. Nezarec wasn't a Guardian, if you did Season of the Plunder, you would know he was an ancient Disciple of the Witness... 3. If you read the lore on Dredgen Yor, you would know there have been some... exaggerations on things when it comes to the Dredgens.

So I gave it a full watch originally wrote a fairly in-depth critique to this critique, and unfortunately before I realized it I had comment that was so long and I couldn't submit it without giving me a constantly Returned error. (I can try to find a way to link it you in the comments, or make a comment chain to give the whole thing if you so chose.) Because there's a lot of stuff you brought up that I believed should be addressed. So instead here's the more condensed and concise comment: While I think you bring up some fair details and criticisms in regards to the Red War campaign worth bringing up (like the Cayde teleporting thing which I hadn't considered and is a good observation) a lot of the video came off as whinging and nit-picky versus the few things I found substantive or compelling arguments especially regarding Ghaul. *For example:* You complain about how much you hate him without looking into why he's designed that way. In fact, you speak of environmental storytelling, but Ghaul's design being the "Michilan Man-Gundam". Yet his white and gold armor was something gifted to him be Emperor Calus, whom he previously dethroned. It matches the aesthetics of the Leviathan Raid Armor and weapons. The reason he looks the way he does is to convey authority and regality, along tying him back to and foreshadowing Calus. This is just one issue I noticed in regards to your critique of Ghaul. Plus some of the corrections/suggestions you offer we're...I'll be honest, really poor. Like "Humanity could team up with The Hive to fight the Cabal, take back the Light, and then turn on the Hive!" almost made me do a spit-take. Was that suggestion meant to be a joke? Because IMHO that's a far worse writing choice than anything in the Red War campaign. You expect a race who genocided trillions to work with their now depowered foes, to defeat the Cabal from taking The Light, and then expect Guardians to take back the Light before The Hive killed Humanity? Heck, you expect the Hive to even agree to work with the Lightless Guardians and not just murder them outright for multiple obvious reasons. You also bring up the other ways that Light has been drained...not mentioning such methods end up corrupting or turning those who wield into sadistic, murdering psychopaths (see Dredgen Yor). Plus the "BUNGIE YOU'RE SO DUMB" moments felt extremely off-putting and childish, especially when your suggested corrections leave much to be desired. Also you bring up "why didn't Ikora and other Guardians just try to take the Traveler's energy and Light from Io?!" Despite there being a mission on Io not long after that mission, in which Asher tries to just that. Turns out, it doesn't work like it was intended and could detrimentally effect Io (as in turning it from stable and habitable back to the hellscape it was). Which by the way, looks the way it does because the Traveler wasn't finished working on it. It did enough to make stable and habitable, but not enough to make flourishing like Venus or ancient Mercury, hence why it's in that state it's in. That said, I think you definitely have potential despite my thoughts on your critique. You have have a solid footing for foundation, editing, and structure of said review videos. You also clearly put a lot of well-placed effort in this video and given it's nearly 1 hour, I imagine it took a lot of time to make the script for, edit, and so forth. You've also been extremely responsive to feedback and constructive, which I laud you for and hope you continue for this and other endeavors. I hope this smaller version of my critique was helpful even if you end up disagreeing. It'd be up for a civil debate or discussion if you'd like. Maybe there is something I missed.
@Nanokk_
@Nanokk_ Жыл бұрын
Wow, okay first thanks for writing this, I think criticism is definitely worth while. I've already seen many people discuss errors I made that where in the lore, honestly I'm not suprised I missed some stuff since there's so much of it. To cover the ghaul part, I didn't look at ghauls design that way, but you make a good point. I didn't know ghaul got his armor from Calus but it makes perfect sense. Calus loves his flashy gold stuff so ghauls armor replicates that pretty well. For the Hive argument, that was supposed to be a throwaway suggestion, not ment to be taken super serious. I understand how you could be taken aback by it lol. The part about asher Mir trying to get the light from IO I'm suprised I missed that because I watched this footage over three times and made multiple revisions. I really enjoyed reading this and I'm very pleased you actually took the time to write this all out. I'm really curious to see what the whole critique of my critique is, if there's any way you would wanna reach out just leave it below. As someone who's new to videos this damn long I'm bound to make mistakes so I wanna hear them now rather than when I've fucked up so bad it can't be reversed.

@@Nanokk_ You’re most welcome, and thanks for the receptive and cordial response. If I can find a way to send my full critique I will, just not sure how to do do. You’re also most welcome for the feedback! Here’s a bit of advice I’ll give in regards to feedback that can make all the difference: Be apt and discerning in your criticism. If you can try to understand why someone might’ve made that decision even if it was ultimately poor or you disagree with it. Sometimes it’s because someone rushed and didn’t think something through, but sometimes it could be for a good reason one might not have considered. IMHO, when it comes to BUNGIE and Destiny, it tends to be mix depending on the context. Ask around to see what people liked and disliked, see if there’s a common thread or even information you from a less expressed opinion you might have not have considered that has merit. I think also limiting or being selective with hyperbole will go a long way.

The whole sacrifice angle is because us guardians, in our previous lives, displayed acts of heroism and sacrifice. That's why the cosmodrome, a place where many people acted in aid and defence, and defiance, for the many more people who tried to escape on the colony ships, is the birthplace of many guardians. My problem is that even if it makes sense that we wouldnt see this information in the main campaign, its so hidden in the lore that only 1000iq people like mynameisbyf and other youtubers of his sort are giving us this information. I agree with you on many points, including the missed opportunities of io, but i wholeheartedly diagree with you saying its hideous. The supervolcano in the dstance, the massive jupiter in the sky, and the abundance of fossils and dead plants all around, hinting at what once was. Considering we can breathe on the moon, i don't think the air on io may actually have been all that purified, it's more likely we just have more of that light magic. Who said the traveler terraformed it for humanity, and not a unique local biosphere? The way the rocks and landforms are shaped too, it does kinda look like cooled and hardened lava, dont you think? I do agree it, along with many other places even now, need more substance and unique gameplay elements, but io is my favourite of the vaulted locations.

I loved the critiques and analysis you did for the Red War and showing how Bungie missed so many chances to tell a better story or make a a greater campaign, but I felt like the IO section of the video was more of ranting than pointing out flaws in the story. Also, the Traveler is paracausal in nature, literally universe defying and ignoring the laws of reality stuff, (whether realistic or not ( I don't really care)), so IO not being realistic to real life IO seems a little silly. But the critique of IO being a boring destination is true, and the rest of the video was alright as well.

The bottom line for me is that I would rather the new lights and playerbase as a whole to be able to experience the Red war without improvement than to not at all. The new light experience now compared to the Red War is lacking in many aspects

This was a good watch. While you could definitely be harsh at times, you echoed the way I felt back when I played through the initial campaign. Your story and character criticisms were on point. Of course, my opinion on The Red War has definitely softened with time, especially since as you pointed out, Bungie threw it in the trash where it's likely to stay. In some ways it feels like this video is 5 years too late, but it's a blast to the past - not just in the retrospective of the campaign itself, but in holding up a mirror to a lot of my feels from a half decade ago. Good luck in college! While I'd like to see more content from you and you are clearly skilled at it, keep your priorities straight.

Hey man I really appreciate that. I've actually still have my first draft of my script about the game from all the way back at around the release of shadowkeep, the reason I didn't release the video sooner was because I didn't think the script was good enough and neither was my patience to edit a video this long. the reason io looks so boring is because it was originally planned to be mars. But since they already had mars for the warmind dlc they decided to simply change the colors and call it io. I think there’s also a d1 crucible map that took place in the pyramidion but in mars.

You've got a lot of potential making videos, I feel like in time, you can make some truly great ones. I would just reccomend doing a little more research on the lore before critiquing the story, I know it's really poorly explained for the most part but KNOWING what's going and then critiquing how poorly explained it is would make your critique hold more weight, for example it's completely justified that you didn't know why ghaul looked like that. But I also have to assume that a lot of this video was made during the season of the plunder, which, outright says, not tucked away in a lore tab, but during a cutscene, that nezerac is a Disciple of the Witness and not a guardian. Also perhaps a greater understanding of the world would make your story suggestions a little better? Because while red war is bad, I can't say any of what you offered up as a replacement was better. Anyway, I would love to see you continue this series because in a game like Destiny with so many missed opportunities, Curse of Osiris is a BIGGG missed opportunity, anyway, keep on keeping on.

Sitting at around 15~ minutes in as of writing and I understand where some folks are coming from, some of the takes feel a bit overly cynical. Saying "any question i made here won't ever get answered" (paraphrased) or going off on small tangents that end in fuck a lot of the time def comes off poorly for sure, you could also do with doing a bit more research as a good number of questions have been answered. There's critique to be made that answers come slowly or too slow for many people to get invested but that doesn't mean a core question asked in witch queen with "will/can the traveller be corrupted" like the prophecies are telling us in game hasn't been answered. As it has been. Guardians too have been corrupted plenty of times too, there's also the argument of us taking the corrupted shard let us easily use Stasis although that's not explicitly talked about it's been a theory for a while. You have many good points but you could present them so much better so it doesn't turn people away, being overly edgy isn't really all that great for genuine discussions. Either you want to be edgy and comedic or you want to have a pretty serious sit down that's well researched (you could absolutely do better here), I don't think mixing edgy and lore & story really gels together. I'll be interested to see what you do next and how you improve but for now i'll have to digest this in chunks as I absolutely think a retrospective & critique can really work to supplement the lore side of the community and help out newer and returning players get a definitive "ahh, so this is why X event is important" as they experience the story.
@Nanokk_
@Nanokk_ Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've made some issues with some lore, kinda bound to happen since theirs so much of it lol. But in terms of mixing serious with edgy? I didn't know I was edgy? Anyway maybe I could be the first to mix the two and make it work😈
@squadass99
@squadass99 Жыл бұрын
@@Nanokk_ It's edgy in the same way that AVGN is, although now that I think about it it's probably not best way to really describe it lol. F bombs for the sake of it is where i personally tend to tune out and the points that are made get lost in the noise. I will give ya praise on how you handled skipping through combat though, that got a good chuckle out of me. Still very interested to see where you go though if you do stay making destiny content, new opinions in the space are very welcome with a lot of the current folk I used to watch delving too far in the negativity and just chasing the views of the toxic bros. It's a breath of fresh air to see genuine critique that isn't trying to scream about a GDC talk lmao. Best of luck to you in your future content! Will be watching with great interest to see where this goes.

@Echoblade I'm gonna stick with making critique style content since it's what I'm enjoying at the moment. I've already finished my first draft of my curse of Osiris script with has a lot of not very nice words lol. I'll probably tone it down. But in terms of edginess the closest I could think of personally is maulers unbridled rage videos. I know not everyone loves the guy but his critiques are pretty damn solid. I want to eventually cover all the destiny 2 DLC content but it's gonna take a while, I'd be suprised if I get it all done by the time the final shape comes out lol

The traveler itself cause no affect to earths gravity and yes the traveler terraforms planets and I don’t think it has limits as it quite literally gave a tiny little AI robot the ability to bring dead people to life and be able to hold the power of the sun in your hands, the raw power of lighting, and the infinite void of a black hole. So yes IO doesn’t look like it’s real life counter part like ik this is a retrospective but by Far read war of d2 was great if cures of Osiris and warmind had actual been good others would agree
@Nanokk_
@Nanokk_ 20 сағат бұрын
Okay let me clarify, it isn't consistent with Destiny itself. Destiny has fantasy stuff and science breaking stuff but nothing like saving an entire moon, like I don't know if you understand how much would have to fundamentally change about io for it not to become a hell planet instantly all over again. The liquid methane oceans of titan are consistent, the dunes of Mars are consistent, so why isn't io? The answer is because it isn't

the red war should’ve and destiny as whole should’ve start using the word light bearer for people who have the ability to use the light instead of using guardians for all people who can use the light a long time ago. and also you would call anyone who has the ability to use light and dark abilities who also happens to not align with the city and vanguard values a rouge light bearer example all the dregens some of calus’s shadows. also the game at the time didn’t tell us this at the time but the power of light and dark aren’t necessarily good and evil. for example the ability to use stasis and the new subclass strand are powers that come from the dark while arc,solar and void are power which are gifted from the light. this is why the lucent brood is able to use light powers.

I know the writing for The Red War is bad, but I have major nostalgia for it anyway. I think it did a better job introducing me to the Destiny universe FAR BETTER than 2014 Vanilla ever could, and it feels natural since I was (and still am) a solo campaign player, it felt immersive to play alone, then canonically after The Last City is retaken and Strikes and Raids were made available, making the socializing in end-game feel like it was a part of the story, but maybe 18-year-old me was overthinking it. Regardless, I payed money for it all back then, if Bungie thinks it threatens the live game, I think they should reconsider making the campaigns all optionally offline (seeing we the players have been paying premium on them, even though I only owned D2 Red War, Forsaken, and now Witch Queen since they don’t plan on deleting that third one)

Honestly its dope that you can accept that the writing sucked but still enjoy it. Its surprising how few people can do that. I've also been a long time Destiny player, I've been playing since the Taken King and I've also purchased every single Destiny 2 dlc (including the ones that have been removed) so I also have a little bit of nostalgia but thats mainly due to screwing around in raids and making fun of the campaigns
