@@pacificmike9501 Hi Mike I am putting a 4speed together right now, I bought all new Andrews close ratio gears and new shafts. I pressed a new bearing into the mainshaft gear race in the case, and when I try to put the gear in it's way to tight on the main drive gear? Same race same size bearing according to the numbers, fits nice on the mainshaft gear until I press it in? Any ideas?
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 3 жыл бұрын
Yep. Go to your best automotive machine shop, take the main drive gear, rollers, and your case. Tell them the fit you want and have them HONE it for you. Make sure it is someone you trust. Every motorcycle shop that was any good, used to have a Sunnen Hone for just such operations. Use your service manual for specifications.

Hi mike thanks for all the great videos! I have a question about the loose roller in the cluster and main drive gear. Can you use oversized rollers in them to tighten up the clearances a bit? I have some +.0004 and I can’t fit all them in I can get 21 and 43 in.
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 3 жыл бұрын
If the surfaces are badly worn, no. If the surfaces are smooth or can be honed to make smooth, then consult your manual and go for it. I've never been a fan of using less rollers. I've seen some, but I couldn't do that.

I love all your videos Mike and have watched some more than once, this may sound like a silly question but I’m just rebuilding the same box, is it ok to leave the kicker gears and spring off the end of the main shaft.? I have electric start and no kicker pedal . Just wondered if they help to do anything else . Thanks again for all the videos Mike, they’re wonderful.

Hi Mike, my 1974 FL 4 speed tranny has longer than normal throw to shift it. The heel and to shifter will actually touch the floor board. There isn't any slop in the linkage to the tranny top. What would be worn in the ratchet top to cause this?
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 Жыл бұрын
If the spaces you experience between gears is okay, simply remove the footshift lever and rotate it one tooth. The ratchet on the lid can be adjusted as per the manual, if this is not adequate.

I noticed that main shaft bearing just loosely fit into the housing after you got the mainshaft out - is that typical? I have both a new housing/race and bearing and the bearing is going to be a press fit, or I'll need to heat up the housing/race to get the bearing in. Or, should I be taking a few thousand off the ID of the bearing housing so the bearing fits easier?
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 2 жыл бұрын
What year are you working with? I'm getting a little lost on your question.
@kevinc.9360
@kevinc.9360 2 жыл бұрын
@@pacificmike9501 early 76. What I meant was the mainshaft ball bearing, and how it fits into the bearing housing itself. It looked like when you were done with removing the mainshaft, you were arranging stuff on your bench and you put the bearing into the bearing housing and it just dropped right in. I have a brand new ball bearing and new bearing housing - and the bearing will not just drop right into the housing - definitely a press fit. I just dug out the old ones I am replacing and the bearing is snug in the bearing housing, but easily pressed in by hand. I think I might just "polish" the ID if that new bearing housing to make for a better fit that will take less than a herculean effort to insert the bearing.
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 2 жыл бұрын
These are the things we get into. Tough call. I think before I got serious about how to do it, I'd measure the bearings you have. Possibility one is defective.
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 2 жыл бұрын
In fact, quite often(especially in "aftermarket"), there is a plus or minus specification on those parts, and if one company made the bearing, and another the housing, they may never fit each other. Sometimes a vernier scale will tell you, sometimes, accurate micrometers.
@kevinc.9360
@kevinc.9360 2 жыл бұрын
@@pacificmike9501 Yeah, so I did some mixing and matching and found that the new bearing fits in the old housing. Measured everything to the best of my ability - old and new bearing OD (and ID) are the same. New housing ID is about .006 smaller than the old. I might just used the old housing if a little polishing of the new ID doesn't fix it. Thanks.
