DIY Garden Room - the garden room is 7.2x4.5m (externally), with a 2"x5" frame, 120mm PIR insulation, warm roof construction with Shou Sugi Ban larch cladding. We use it as a home office, gym and tv cinema room. Built 75% by Karen and 25% help from her husband.
This episode covers building the base from grade C24 2"x5" (45x120mm) treated timbers and fitting 120mm PIR insulation.
BACKGROUND - During the first UK 2020 lockdown I decided to build my family a garden room. The teens had nowhere to hang out away from us parents and my husband was working from home indefinitely and needed office space. We have the space in the garden (even if it is sloped) - so why not build a multifunctional room! I had time on my hands (covid scuppered my business) and had talked about building one for years - now was my opportunity! I learnt tonnes along the way having only tackled fences, shed bases and wood stores before this. Subscribe to see the last in the series when I highlight all the key learning points and tips for building a garden room.
This series is backed up with a more detailed version on my blog - ourhomeprojects.co.uk (still writing it atm!)

Completely forgot to mention NOGGINS in the video ! Noggins are the short pieces of wood in between the joists to add strength and reduce twisting. Noggins were added down the middle of each section with a mixture of 80mm wood screws and nails. Of course, my handy spreadsheet already told me what size to cut them to - TIP - cut them to what they should be and make them fit, rather than cutting to the gap. This will help keep the joists straight.

Thanks for checking in Geoff. Really appreciate your kind words. Yes, my little tripod was pretty much the only company I had for several months! haha! I have decided to make sure she's in every video I publish from now on. We actually have a second cat, but she likes to sunbathe at a distance. 😎 Karen

Hi Robert, welcome to the channel! Would love to know how you found me - was it through the gabion wall vids or the garden room? We definitely have some challenges on this sloped site! Lots more videos to come so please stick around 🙂 Karen

Thanks Luc, in fact our electrician said he’d hire me as he thought the whole build was so good 😂 It took me about 7 months to complete so I don’t think I’ll be doing one for anyone else haha! We’re on the edge of the Chiltern Hills. Thanks for watching. Karen

Hi Rod, 😁 it actually is quite straightforward... thanks to channels like Ali Dymock. It's funny, I was researching the same time he was releasing videos and we were both coming to the same conclusions, so hopefully it's right! haha Karen

@@OurHomeProjects so you used timber lock screws for everything when joining wooden components? What about noggins, regular screws?
@OurHomeProjects
@OurHomeProjects 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rod, we only used the Timberlock screws on the base. We've built two other raised shed base frames and found the Timberlock screws really solid. The only issue we had was the hex head sticking out and had to countersink some of those where two frames met. No big deal. Re noggins (which I completely forgot to detail in the video!!) were attached with a mixture of 80mm wood screws and nails. However, we don't own a nail gun, so quickly dropped doing nails for much of the rest of the build. I will put together a material list for each video. HTH Karen

@@OurHomeProjects thankyou. I am a big fan of these also and the star head screws which I use a lot solid with my impact drive and hardly any head.

Thank you! I wanted my series to be slightly different to other garden-roomers out there. More of a bullet point list of everything to remember during the build. Good luck with your room- I found it a very rewarding build! Karen

Thanks, inspirational vid.., reminds me to crack on with my build! I noticed you used battens to hold up the insulation leaving it part exposed underneath. Could rodents/vermin eat away at it or build a home there?
@OurHomeProjects
@OurHomeProjects 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kal, thanks for watching. We did think about that, but as we’re on a slope there is quite a bit of height between the insulation and the ground. It’s a bit exposed as a place for vermin to settle (plus we have 2 cats who regularly go underneath it! 😂). Unless your location could be prone to vermin settling and is quite low to the ground, I would have thought the foil coating on the PIR insulation would be too much of an effort to penetrate and nest in. It think the rockwool insulation is probably more at risk to vermin disruption. HTH. Karen
