Delicate and nuanced yet powerful and deeply moving. What a wonderful balancing act this film is.

This movie is sooo adult. It's heartbreaking because it's so real, but also because they are acknowledging how life takes away our choices. I don't ugly cry in front of people a lot, but saw it with people and tried to keep it all in. I just think about this movie so much after watching it

When it ended, it took me about 10 seconds from when the credits started and then it hit me...and then I lost it. What a great film. Did anyone else get the Lost in Translation vibe at the end?

Most definitely - especially the city imagery and all that was left unsaid between them

Wow. You both just got a new subscriber. I want to go back to the cinema and watch this from your points about the cinematography alone because what you said is so true. I didn't pay attention to it at all! This film had me in tears, blasting Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol at full volume on my way home from the theatre. What I love most about the screenplay is how it packs tiny little gut punches of dialogue throughout the entire film. So beautiful and intimate. So many things left unsaid. Win all the awards!

Wonderfully in-depth review! Happy I found you guys! I, too, thought the movie was beautiful and I cried like a baby. Absolutely loved it. Thanks for pointing out the couple in the bar. I missed that. Will go and watch again.❤️

Really insightful review. The pacing was a bit slow in the first half for me, but I was still invested. It was sad and beautiful.

Very enjoyable analysis if the film, guys. You two are both very good at this. So, thank you. I saw it the other day and enjoyed it very much. It's even better the second time. I gave it an 8 out of 10. One interesting tidbit that I learned recently about the film ... the director purposely kept the two male actors apart during filming. This was so that when they meet for the first time in the apartment, it would be even more genuine. So that first encounter between Arthur and Hae Sung truly was when John Magaro and Teo Yoo truly met in real life.

Great review, like always. I see the movie as Comfort Vs Love. I don't think Nora and Arthur are in love. They have made a comfortable life, a route. While Hae Sung is the love of her life. Nora is afraid. Imagine holding your wife while she cries for another man.

That’s certainly an interesting ambiguity isn’t it? You could equally imagine this having an ending like the Graduate where they follow their infatuations but quickly they say “Now what?” It May also be that the comfort love with Arthur is a different type of love, one far less immediate. I don’t think any one of these things is the right answer, but how the film ambiguously engages with all of the above is why we liked it so much.

Your review perfectly resonates with my thoughts about the movie. I was curious to see if others had a similar viewing experience and interpretation. Thankfully, our perspectives align perfectly. The movie also led me to contemplate Wang Kar Wai's works.

Hey guys. Just found your channel and subscribed. I’ve been with my partner for over 30 years. I’m a cinephile and he can’t still long enough to watch a movie. Lol. I’m jealous of you two. But with Past Lives I likes it but not as much as others. I just didn’t find Nora as a likable character. But this movie will be a dark horse when awards season comes around. Fun fact. The director did not let the two Korean actors touch each other at all until they first hugged which you saw on the screen. Also. The two male leads were not even allowed to meet each other until the scene in the apartment. So what you are seeing are the two actors literally seeing each other for the first time ever. Glad I found your channel. I can vicariously pretend my partner watches movies via you two. Lol.

Revisiting your review after having seen the movie (twice!). Your analysis is spot on and obviously the movie touched me greatly. I did watch the movie after seeing the reviews, so I knew most of what it was about. I think the non-verbal scenes of the characters are what really elevated it for me. My fave character was Haesung. Anyway, thanks as always for your insightful reviews.

I really didn't see this movie as a love triangle movie since there isn't any of the drama like you mentioned. And when the husband asked, it doesn't sound like Nora was attracted to him or at least that is what she is saying to the husband or herself? I liked it, but did not love it. But after hearing more reviews and commentaries, there are a lot of sublties in this movie that might be worthy of multiple viewings.

Definitely plan to see it when it hits streaming, despite the fact that I am indescribably irritated that “whoa” is misspelled as “woah” in the film’s subtitles. We live in a world of laziness, and a world in which ignorance breeds mistakes and no one seems to care about getting details correct. There is no excuse whatsoever for that misspelling having evaded every round of people on the filmmaking team getting a look at it before release.

im going to be unpopular here and brutal. this movie exemplifies what a weak man is. hae song too chicken and cowards in friend zone. arthur must feel emasculated to let his wife be alone with another man come on.

I agree. This is a female fantasy movie. Hae sung is wasting his life thinking about Nora. Arthur is pretty much a cuckhold.

because being domineering, controlling, indifferent, uncaring and insecure sounds like an emotionally healthy and fulfilling way to be and to relate to other people. except you obviously don't see women as people so probably you don't care about that lol
