Back in the mid-60s, I attended many a Kay McAbee concert at the Rialto Theatre, Joliet, IL. His performances always combined great showmanship with gentle....and often humorous....commentary. My organ teacher at the time, Faye Wheeler, often sang his praises. We miss you, Mr. McAbee.

It was wonderful to meet Kay when he was up here in Wisconsin several years back. He was another one of the few "greats" who will never be replaced. I play Tea For Two but to be sure- nothing like Kay played it. There are musicians like me who can do OK and get by. A musician like Kay was is someone who is endowed with that special sparkle that sets them far-far above the so-so players. I sure wish I had it but then again I so enjoy listening to those who can play like Kay did.

This video reminds me of my dad... I still have my fathers 1960 Hammond B-3 organ, although he's gone in 2004. No one famous, but in my mind,he was!!! I'm a HVAC mechanic, not an organist... I miss him, and the joy of that sound he produced!

I wish my Granddad was still alive, he was a not thaught but very good piano and church organ player... I'm sure watching something like this would thrill him as I do (or make him jealous maybe, cause he also had that piece of character I believe). Anyway, Kay McAbee does remind me of my granddad sitting at his piano and playing. He couldn't read sheet music, he'd just walk through a place, hear a piece of music if he liked it and played it on his piano without even practising, he must have already figured it out in his mind. Now I can play music but not like that..... And this video of Kay McAbee is one of my KZfaq's very favourites. Rest in Peace, hope you'll meet my granddad somewhere up there. :)

Hearing the grand sound of this organ helps us to remember him. Some theatre organ videos shows how the organist would raise and lower the console. As the way KETC movie narrator Jim Kurtcher would put it, Kay McAbee really hasn't gone away. Not for those who loved him.

This was the main 5 manual console of the former Roxy Theater in New York. It was flanked on both sides by two 3 manual consoles. All 3 could be played at the same time and were drawing from the same organ pipes. The Roxy also had another Kimball pipe organ in a seperate studio for radio broadcasting as well as a Kimball player pipe organ in the mezzanine. Those were the days. An interesting side note was the fact that this organ never really sounded as good as it should have in the main theater auditorium because the pipes were under the stage so that when the orchestra pit was raised it ended up muffling all lot of the sound.

Whatever became of that interesting creation?
@JonasClark
@JonasClark 7 жыл бұрын
Everything went down with the building except this console and, supposedly, a few ranks of pipes. The auditorium organ had 34 ranks. The lobby organ was a 3/14 with Artiste player, and the radio studio had a 2/8. Another interesting fact was that the organ's chimes (its only set) were massive (probably J. C. Deagan) tower chimes, with two sets of shutters: one into the auditorium and another leading outside! I don't know if they were ever played outside, but supposedly they could be. There was also a Fanfare or Echo above the proscenium with a few high-pressure reed ranks (and a band fife, though this was registered as "fanfare" it was in one of the under-stage chambers). Phil Maloof has both the NYC Roxy console and the Chicago Stadium's six-manual Barton console in his hope, playing pipes, though I don't know how many ranks.
@JonasClark
@JonasClark 7 жыл бұрын
Years ago I read a claim that the Roxy was supposed to have FIVE consoles on the main organ: 5/3/3/2/2. But now I can neither find that reference, nor has anyone I've located heard it. Have you? Is my mind playing tricks on me?
@JonasClark
@JonasClark 7 жыл бұрын
It seems I can't edit my comment, but I just remembered: the "Artiste" was Moller's roll-player. The Kimball system was the "Soloist."

A Kimball - a very rare organ. Aside from the quality of their pipes, the chest action was about the fastest and most efficient of any ever built. I wonder if they use the original switching system or the replaced it with electronics. These theater organists have a great mastery of registration and dexterity in handling the organ
